1. What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this? How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?

Information Technologies allows every internet user joining digital knowledge and content production. Our organization works to support internet users in using this opportunity. We would like to support internet users share their knowledge on the internet and the proliferation of quality content freely accessible by everyone. We believe that such voluntary contributions of internet users would turn into personal and social wealth.

2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?

Our country has good internet penetration and Wikipedia is a well-known platform as a knowledge source. However, the volunteer-based functioning of Wikimedia projects is not understood and contributions are very low when compared to consumption of the wiki-projects. We would like to overcome this situation by a series of year-round activities in partnership with academic institutions and civil society organizations aimed at increasing awareness on wikipedia-editing.

A second problem we would like to deal with is the lack of cooperation and connection between active contributors. We propose to overcome this by creating opportunities to get to know each other in regular meetings where people do share their wiki experiences and ideas.

We see the concentration of content-production on only popular culture topics as a challenge to be solved by bringing contributors from diverse backgrounds and fields as well as by organizing thematic-wiki-events in partnership with institutions from several fields.

Finally we would like to support open culture in the country by discussing with culture institutions the possibility of sharing some material through wiki projects. We don't expect big digital donations from any institutions but we are aiming at creating interest and sowing the seeds for the future.

3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

1. Students Edit Wiki Projects Program

a. Wiki Assignments are class activities where students contribute wiki projects as an assignment and wikipedians visit their courses and support them and their instructors during the term. Our aim is to make this work in 15 courses in different education institutions throughout the country during the year and reach 350 students with this program. b. Wiki Club Activities are activities organized in partnership with student clubs. We would like to support students to establish a “Wikipedia Club” or “Open Knowledge Club” in their universities. We hope to see opening a club at least one university. If that would not be possible we support wiki activities realized by other student clubs.

2.Grow the content program

a.Photography contest. We'll organize Wiki Loves Earth as this is a proven way of bringing newcomers to the projects and increasing visibility for the group in the media. b.Article contests. We'll take part in two international article contests (CEE Spring and Turkic Wikimarathon) as a way of encouraging active contributors to contribute in different topics. c.Thematic-edit-a-thons. We'll organize 3 thematic edit-athons with civil society partners to develop content using their expertise.

3. Stronger Community Program

a.VikiSalı meetings are meetings open to all contributors and newcomers; and will be regularly held twice every month. b. Wikidata birthday party. We will organize a party for bringing the current editors to share their experiences with wikidata and celebrate the 10th birthday of wikidata.

4.Open Culture Partnerships Program

a.Glam visits involve talks with Glam institutions where we will be introducing Wikimedia projects and searching the possibility of sharing some material through wiki projects. We are planning to have talks with 6 institutions during the year.

Content Gender gap

8.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

Some part of the proposal include edit-a-thons designed for closing the gender gap by producing content on gender related issues through partnership with gender studies departments of universities and women groups. The prospect partners to work with are The Women's Library and Information Center Foundation (Istanbul), Women Filmmakers Association (Izmir), Istanbul University gender studies department.

11. What are your strategies for engaging participants, particularly those that currently are non-Wikimedia?

In the "Grow the Content Program" we try to attract non-wikimedians from different fields of expertise by organising thematic edit-a-thons in partnership with related organisations on that field. We invite new contributors who would contribute on not so well covered topics with the support of the partner organisations.

Considering underrepresentation of women in wiki projects, at least one thematic edit-a-thon will be about women biographies and we expect participation and contribution particularly from women as we'll oranize it with women's groups. Istanbul Universiy Gender Studies Department and Women Filmmakers Association (izmir) are our potential partners. Another underrepresented group is senior citizend and we are planning to reach and encourage senior citizens to get involved in wiki projects by our partnership with the gerontology association in Antalya.

In the “Students Edit Wiki Projects” program, our participants have mostly been university students. This year we are willing to suggest students to establish wiki-clubs in their school. In this way, we’d like to try a student-initiated model for including university students in wiki projects and see whether it’s more effective than Wikipedia assignments given by instructors.

We further grow the program by including secondary schools as well and will be reaching a younger group. In addition to their contributions as editors, we are willing to get the perspectives of those younger participants on how they use the wiki projects, what content gaps they feel.

Our partner organisations do also serve to get feedback from the participants and re-organize more workshops and trainings when there is a request from the gorup. Additionally we invite the participants to our WikiTuesday meetings to keep them in the Wikimedia group; and include in the telegram groups to make sure that they will get support from the community when they need

12. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants and promoting the UCOC and Friendly Space Policy, and/or equivalent local policies and processes?

Periodic reminders of the existence and importance of the UCoC during the community meetups and in social media conversation. Not allowing on-wiki discussions to be moved to events and community meet up by clearly setting and reminding the agenda.

13. Do you have plans to work with Wikimedia communities, groups, or affiliates in your country, or in other countries, to implement this proposal?


13.1 If yes, please tell us about these connections online and offline and how you have let Wikimedia communities know about this proposal.

We connect with other communities in the Wikimedia movement by coordinating local competitions as a part of international editing competitions. There are two editing competitions included in the program and both are organized as a part of international editing contests. One is Turkic Edit-a-thon organized by Turkic Wikimedians Group, the other is the CEE Spring contest thatTurkish WP community has participated in every year since 2015. In addition, we plan to collaborate with Turkic Wikimedians in the Wikidata Birthday event as we did last year. Wikidata is a project where there is much need for in-community training both for Turkish community and for smaller Turkic communities; therefore we would like to use events around 10th birthday of Wikidata as an opportunity for such training and knowledge sharing for not only our community but other communities as we previously did.

14. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedian partners to implement this proposal?


14.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.

Our Grow the Content Program involves partnerships with several non-Wikimedian organizations to organize edit-a-thons and trainings. The partners and events are not definitely set yet but we already have partnership talks with those organisations: UN-Women for making thematic edit-a-thon on “Gender Advertisement”, Museums Association to make a series of trainings with museum professionals in each city; "The Women's Library and Information Centre Foundation" for Art&Feminism edit-a-thon; Association of Aging Studies for developing a wiki module for their training program; Troy Museum for organizing "Ancient Troy" edit-a-thon. In those events, partners are expected to provide the space, cover the expenses related to promotion of the event and sometimes the food/snacks.

15. How do you hope to sustain or expand the work carried out in this proposal after the grant?

As we get results from the works in this proposal, we expect thematic edit-a-thons with civil organizations, Wikipedia-editing assignments and wiki-clubs at schools and partnerships with especially museums grow in number largely. We expect the organizations already introduced with Wikimedia projects with this program to soon become self-sufficient about organizing the activities in the program they are involved in and continue similar activities using their internal sources. However, the need to introduce wiki projects to new groups and organizations all over the country would continue. We would like to make wiki-editing a part of digital competency training and workshops; and hope getting support from the organizations working on digital literacy, and funding-programs designed for upskilling and reskilling the digital competencies of individuals and organizations from different parts of the society

16. What kind of risks do you anticipate and how would you mitigate these. This can include factors such as external/contextual issues that may affect implementation, as well as internal issues, such as governance/leadership changes.

Our proposal include both online and in-person events. We are planning to increase the number of in-person events; since we observe that people are becoming fatigue from overuse of videotelephony. However, this may not be possible if pandemic conditions do not get better. In this case we'll be having B Plan for making those events as online

19. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?

This year, we will be working with similar groups and organisations (universities, glam organisations, civil society organisations) we worked last year to grow the wiki sprit in Turkey, but we would like to try some new things and learn from those experiments (i.e trainings for people at different age groups, differenty types of university courses)

1. Which courses (i.e critical reading & writing, social responsibility projects, departmental required courses) are more suitable for wikipedia assignments at university courses?

We organize wikipedia assignments in different types of university courses at several universities. The courses can be grouped as: Wikipedia assignments at departmental courses; Wikipedia assignments at writing skills or digital competencies courses; Wikipedia assignments as a project work at social responsibility/voluntarism courses. Based on the number of edits and written feedbacks from the participants we'd like to understand in what sort of courses students feel they benefited from wikipedia assignment more.

2. How could we support the creation of a Wikipedia club in a university and its activities? Would that be more encouraging for students to contribute than wikipedia assignments?

This proposal includes an effort to create wikipedia clubs in universities. We would like to encourage our university student members to establish a wiki club in their school and set this experience as an example for others. In previous years, our activities focused on introducing Wikipedia editing only as a part of the courses. We'd like to see whether starting wiki contributions in club activities is a better motivator than editing as an assignments. We want to compare the number of editors gained through club activities and courses. We want to get feedback from members about their experience related to establishing a wiki club.

3. What sort of wiki-editing related activities could be tried at secondary schools? How could we encourage secondary school teachers to implement those activities?

In previous years we have been working only with university students. This year we have connections with secondary school teachers who would like to make wiki activities with their students. We'd like to make brainstorming to find relevant activities for different age groups try some of those activities and share experiences.

4. What are the main motivating factors for local administrations, governmental museums and private museums for sharing their digital assets on wiki projects?

Through our partnership with Digital Cultural Network (Ankara), the number of museums we introduce wikimedia projects increase. We would like to get feedback from partners about their level of interest in sharing their digital assets on wiki projects and their motivation.

The proposal includes year-round activities with different partners. Our main goal is to be able to build partnerships with different types of organizations to set examples for future collaboration with similar organizations. After the removal of the Wikipedia block, there are still some concerns about partnering with Wikipedians and we see that organizations would like to see concrete examples made with the same type of organizations to start working with volunteers of Wikimedia projects. Therefore, our main objective is setting those examples to facilitate future work for all volunteers, and we consider the increase in number of editors and content as not the main objective in the program.
