  2. The proposal is well-crafted, with clearly stated goals, implementation techniques, and a high degree of community participation to address knowledge gaps and transform students' perceptions of Wikipedia as an online encyclopedia. Endorsement for the first implementation of Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom Program for Secondary School Students in Nigeria

[edit]
  1. The proposal is essential for the implementation and adoption of the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom in Nigeria 59 teachers in Nigeria have recently been certified on how to adopt UNESCO's Media and Information Literacy Framework to promote media and information literacy skills using Wikipedia as a learning tool. It is important to the students to educate them on how to access, retrieve, evaluate and update contents by promoting free knowledge and using Wikipedia as an open education resource to promote media and information literacy skills.
  2. The proposal is well-crafted, with clearly stated goals, implementation strategies, and a high level of community involvement to address misinformation and create awareness for secondary school students on the effective use of Wikipedia for classroom activities. I believe that this project has the potential to assist certified teachers with the step down training of the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom.
  3. This proposal is based on research which found that most of the federal ministry of education policy in Nigeria does not prioritise media and information literacy skill which is very enssential to promote safer internet in today's world. As a result, this project has the potential to significantly boost secondary school students digital literacy skills, research skills, critical thinking skills, and assist them in acquiring new knowledge outside of their regular academic activities.
  4. As the first certified trainer of the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom in Nigeria, I believe that this project proposal will assist secondary school students to learn how to use Wikipedia articles for classroom activities, as well as evaluate and monitor Wikipedia articles. The project will also assist students in using Wikipedia (and other Wikimedia products) to effectively search, access, retrieve, interpret, and create the information consumed under close supervision.
  5. This project will help improve contents on Wikipedia, Wikicommons, and this project aligns with the recommendations of Wikimedia 2030 Movement strategy which include:
  • Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement
  • Improve User Experience
  • Coordinate Across Stakeholders
  • Invest in Skills and Leadership Development
  • Identify Topics for Impact
  • Innovate in Free Knowledge Evaluate, Iterate, and Adapt
  1. The project proposal is carefully drafted and coherent in terms of the objectives, strategies, budget and expected results (metrics). Bukky658 (talk) 15:06, 20 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Comments and questions to learn more about proposal

[edit]

Dear @James Rhoda:,

My name's Melissa Guadalupe Huertas and I'm part of the Education team at the Wikimedia Foundation. Miss Bukola James shared your proposal with our team and after reviewing I have a few pending questions and comments. I think overall the proposal presents an innovative and valuable way to further engage with teachers that have completed the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom program. From your proposal, I understand that you want to work with 3 of these teachers to help them put into practice what they learned in the program and supporting them as they implement their activities with students. I think this is a great way to sustain the engagement with teachers, support them in a leadership development opportunity, and get insights from direct classroom experience. - Could you provide more details as to how the sessions between students and teachers will ideally look like? For example, what will be the main focus of each sessions and what sequence will they follow? - What will the role of the organizing team be within this classroom implementation? - Are there any strategies that you plan on implementing to ensure the commitment of these 3 teachers from start to end? - You also mention a 3-week edit-a-thon, is that something that the teachers are expected to lead? Is it a mandatory or optional component of the program? I think some adjustments in your answers to questions 2 and 3 to show how your strategies align with specific actions will be helpful in understanding some of these details. Thank you for your kind attention! MGuadalupe (WMF) (talk) 22:15, 15 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Dear MGuadalupe (WMF),

Thank you so much for taking out time to review the proposal. Kindly find below my response to your questions.

1. Could you provide more details as to how the sessions between students and teachers will ideally look like? For example, what will be the main focus of each session and what sequence will they follow?

The sessions between Students and Teachers will ideally focus on adopting the strategies of the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Framework of the reading Wikipedia in the classroom program and incorporating the adapted lesson plan of the certified Teachers in the classroom for students.

  • Session 1: Accessing, Retrieving, and evaluating Information
  • Session 2: Creating Information using adapted lesson plan

2.What will the role of the organizing team be within this classroom implementation?

The role of the organising team will be divided into the following stages;

Planning:

From the 1st to the 3rd week of September 2022;

  • Create awareness for the program online and offline
  • Call for Certified Teacher of RWC, their students, and schools.
  • Visit to schools to evaluate their facilities for the program implementation.
  • Selection of RWC Teachers and Schools that met the program implementation requirements.
  • Preparation of program materials, and adaptation.
  • Preparation of Slides presentations for the implementation, and adjusting the design for better print quality, etc.
  • General printing of course guide and other information materials for the program.
  • Promotion and dissemination of the program
  • Conducting pre-survey/need assessment for certified teachers
  • Creating communication channels via Social Media Platforms

Implementation: This program will adopt the Blended mode of implementation.

The 6 physical trainings at 3 selected schools will take place offline within the classroom and will establish the EduWiki Secondary School Club. We will adopt an online one-on-one supports as well as follow-up for the certified Teachers using different communication channels. The implementation will hold on different days of the weeks at the 3 selected secondary schools in Kwara State whose teachers have already been certified. The sessions will hold as follows;

School 1

  • Session 1 21st September 2022 Session 1 Accessing, Retrieving, and evaluating Information
  • Session 2 22nd September 2022 Session 2 Creating Information using adapted lesson plan

School 2

  • Session 1 29th September 2022 Session 1 Accessing, Retrieving, and evaluating Information
  • Session 2 30th September 2022 Session 2 Creating Information using adapted lesson plan

School 3

  • Session 1 6th October 2022 Session 1 Accessing, Retrieving, and evaluating Information
  • Session 2 7th October 2022 Session 2 Creating Information using adapted lesson plan

Evaluation: Finish inputting evaluation questions to Google Form from July 8th to August 8th, 2022.

  • Print Evaluation Questions for Teachers and students (English).
  • Final Interview and Data Collation Preparation
  • Launch of Online Post-Survey (email and promotion during the graduation ceremony).
  • Scheduling and conducting interviews with participating teachers and students.
  • Generate and analyze post-survey data for processing.
  • Compile and organize post-survey and interview results.
  • Preparation of project reports 15th to 30th October, 2022.
3. Are there any strategies that you plan on implementing to ensure the commitment of these 3 teachers from start to end?

To ensure the commitments of these 3 Teachers we intend to;

  • Put them in charge of the training as certified trainers for their students.
  • Request a recommendation letter on their behalf from the Wikimedia Education Team.
  • Issue them a certificate of performance/participation at the end of the program whilst also providing a certificate of participation for the students.
4. You also mention a 3-week edit-a-thon, is that something that the teachers are expected to lead? Is it a mandatory or optional component of the program?

The 3 weeks Edithatons will be led by the certified Teachers in their respective schools during their Classroom activities using the adapted lesson plans. It is part of the program implementation that will help ensure that the students maximize the full potential of the program, hence it is mandatory.

5. I think some adjustments in your answers to questions 2 and 3 to show how your strategies align with specific actions will be helpful in understanding some of these details.

The adjustment to Question 2 includes;

  • Introduce students to the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Framework as pedagogical tools to understand the different stages involved in the information cycle.
  • Working with teachers who completed the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom program to implement the lesson plans they created into regular classroom activities for their students.
  • Incorporate the use of OERs from the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom program (Student's guide, Knowledge Quest activity, etc.) to help students learn more about Wikipedia's content policies and processes.
  • Engage secondary school students with the Eduwiki secondary school club in Kwara state.
  • Demonstrating for teachers and students the value of adding or improving local content on English Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikipedia Common both for their skills developemnt and as an act of service and leadership for the community.

The adjustment to Question 3 is stated in the implementation above.
