Grants talk:Project/Rapid/Launching of Wikimedia Fan Club, University of Ilorin.

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

@Danidamiobi: thank you so much for your zeal. I am so glad for replicating the idea of Fan Club at your institutions.

I have few concerns about the proposal:

  • Wikimedia events its not all about editathon, since this project is campus base and you have plan for just 2 days. I will suggest that you should focus on activities that will create awareness about the club , its objectives and also reaching out to more members in the campus that will join the club within the two-days events. Subsequently, you will need to plan meetups where you will be engaging the club on practical sessions which will include, editathon, photo contests and even socializing etc as ways of creating activities within club ( We should avoid over burden the two-days with events) .
  • Your impact or measure of success are not clear enough, please try to make it clearer.
  • I don't think you need any special advert on social media for this project ( Being a campus base project). Mere sharing on social media will be OK. However, publicity on day 1 will do the magic.

My suggestions

  • Day 1:Massive outreach across the school campus which will focus on inviting students for the event of Day 2. ( Distribution of fliers, drumming and dancing around the campus with your unique t shirt etc). Please note that the flier will be inform of invite for the event of day 2.... Which is launching of the club.
  • Day 2 Should be inform of symposium, the floor will be open for the invited speakers to charge the students about needs to contributes to Wikimedia related projects .

It will also be a good platform where you will formally sell your ideas and vision of the club to the likely potential members of the club . You can also introduce cutting of cake for the club by the pioneer members. I think all these activities will spur more students to to join you and your team on this project. • Comment Comment -- I wholeheartedly endorsed Olushola's comments above. I personally do not see any reason for edit-athon or workshop at this time. We should be talking about launching and creating awareness within the campus about the new fan club. Thus, I am not going to comment on your measure of success as I believe it's too soon for edit-athon/workshop/training. I suggest that you move this request back to draft so that you could redesign it to focus on awareness as recommended above by Olaniyan Olushola. Regards. • Comment Comment -- Thank you so much for your thoughts on this. Olaniyan_Olushola, your view was constructive. I had foreseen the edith-a-thon being out of scope for the event and still thought to try. Also, as you have pointed out, a social media advert would broadly meet the wrong audience. I opt in for a massive publicity on Day 1 which would bee an highly impactful one. I have reflected your recommendations on the proposal. Thank you Wikicology for helping me avoid putting too much iron in the fire at a time.Danidamiobi (talk) 21:07, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Looks better. Regards. Wikicology (talk) 12:21, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Comment Although I have already endorsed the project, I'm still a little bit surprised, 'why simple Wikipedia' their understanding of the English Language is expected to be solid enough to edit the en. Cheers! Mahveotm (talk) 08:11, 27 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Comment Thanks Mahveotm. Asking Why Simple? is a very good question. The Simple Wikipedia has helped kids, people with learning disabilities, people who don't understand English and people who just need a simple and precise version of the usually lengthy and sometimes complex EN. The Simple has not been paid too much attention lately, some articles are even outdated and no longer match with their English Wikipedia version. There are lots of Nigerian articles in red on the Simple Wikipedia and only Nigerians can really pick up the responsibility to. It's a Wikimedia project so we are in for it.
