Wikimania 2021 Participation[edit]

The planning Wikimedia Community User Group Kenya was part of the consortium that applied for a joint grant, through Wikimedia User Group Tanzania, to enable community members participate in the first virtual wikimania.

The 2021 Wikimania was the first that our community members had the privilege to attend and it was a great opportunity to leran more about the movement and network with fellow community members.

We had a total of 12 participants from the Planning Wikimedia Community User Group Kenya, who joined the 5-day conference.

Our average Wikimania attendance was 3-5 days.

Wikimania Scholarship[edit]

We received a total wikimania scholarship of $1,059 that supported Data, Childcare, eposters design, administrative and Post Wikimania meet up expenses.

Scholarship Allocation[edit]

We created a survey via a google document before funds were allocated and distrubed to mapp out the needs of community members and also get an overview of the days they planned to attend Wikimania. This helped us to allocate data and childcare costs based on the feedback received. Consequently, we had an informed guideline on the allocations that ensured menagiful particpation for aparticpants compared to issuing a standardised allocation.

Data per person per day - Ksh 500

Childcare per person per day - Ksh1000

All participants received data allocation as per the days they attended Wikimania (Based on the Google Doc survey) while a total of 7 pax received childcare support.

Wikimania Debriefing[edit]

The represantative of the planning Wikimedia User Group Kenya User:Ms Kabintie who was also part of the Wikimania Core-Organising Team, convened a virtual wikimania debriefing meeting for community members that aimed at; communicatinng all basic information on the conference that included; Remo Access and virtual tour, how to make the best of Wikimania events and participation and the program digest that mapped out some of the sessions that could be of interest to members as well as respond to any questions particpants might have regarding wikimania 2021.

Participants were also informed that the Wikimania Scholarship would be sent as reimbursement owing to the delays in the scholraship application and processing, which saw the funds arrive in September, weeks after Wikimania.

The debrief proved to be very useful to the participants and helped them understand the essence of Wikimania and the program better, considering that we are an emerging community.

Post Wikimania Meet-up[edit]

We were not able to host this as soon as we had hoped for due to conflicting schedules arising from work commitments and also most participants being engaged other wiki in other campaigns such as She Said, Wiki Indaba and Afrocine but we are set to convene on November 25th.

We key among things discuss the following areas;

  1. What worked well during wikimania?
  2. What didn't work well?
  3. Lessons learned and areas of participation in Future Wikimania?
  4. Future Plans for our community

Testimonials[edit]

All participants were enthusiastic about participating in Wikimania 2020, which happened to be the first for all with the exception of User:FaithMwanyolo who had particpated in the 2019 Wikimania in South Africa.

They mostly enjoyed the technology, sessions, on demand sessions on youtube and networking.

"I enjoyed the Technology and the safe space it created for participants. It was mazing to walk around in many rooms, the fact that it was not static".  Sean.

"I liked the flexibility of being able to choose what sessions to attend based on what suits you. I was happy to see alot of participtants from Kenya, which made me feel at home. However, for an Introvert like me, i struggled to connect with people," Terry.

"The floor navigation in Remo was great and sessions showeed how education is evolving. Youtube lifestream was such a great option that ensured you coud watch sessions at your own time or incase you had trouble navigating Remo like i did in the first days. I dont like the fact that Remo kis not mobile friendly and i hope the company can work on this," Noreen.

"Wikimania 2021 was amazing. I travelled to Germany without a passport and visa; made great Connections with other wikimedians across the globe including Wikiwomen in Red and even got a chance to host an edit-a-thon," Carol.

"I really liked the option of moving floors," '''Cosmas.

We hope to host an inperson Wikimania in Kenya in the near future.

Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? Yes

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

}}
Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Support 40 particpants with Data at a cost of KSH 1000 each Supported a total of 16 particiants with data Folowing a survey on google doc and also considering the number of days Wikimania was to run, and the platform, it was going to be unrealistic to come up with a standard data allocation. eg for a participant attending all 5 dadys wikimmania, 1k worth of data would have been insiginificant. We reolved to allocate data on need basis. We supported less people but with much more allocation than estimated at time of grant application. This saw us overun the $368 allocated for data but the difference was curved from childcare allocation since not everyone claimed childcare support.
30 Supported 7 pax with childcare. 4 got chilcare for all 5 days they attended wikimania while 4 got an allocation for 2 days. Just as the case with Data , childcare was also allocated on need basis, based on the survey.
Video Production services Videos not produced This allocation was meant to cater for videography for the EA presentation during Wikimania but due to time constraints, which saw a different format adopted it did not materiliaze. An external harddisk and lavalier microphone had been purchased already to facilitate this. We resolve to channel the remaining funds to host a post Wikimania Meet up instead, which community members felt would be ncessary to help us convene and share our experiences during Wikimania since this was our first to attend. The reamining funds catered for meals, soft drinks and tshirts for particpants. I'll keep the gadgets for use in future community events.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well? coordination was good and majority of the participants enjoyed wikimania.

The google doc survey was such a good idea as it helped make inofrmed choice on scholarship aalocation.

  • What did not work so well? Participants wished the remo platform was mobile friendly

  • What would you do differently next time?

Plan early
