Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Makassarese

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
submitted verification final decision

This language has been verified as eligible.
The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page.

Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval and will verify the test project content with a reliable neutral source, such as a professor or expert.

If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval.

A committee member provided the following comment:

Please contribute to the test project. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:34, 13 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:

Proposal[edit]

Makassar language is a language of the Makassarese, spoken in South Sulawesi province of Indonesia. It is a member of the South Sulawesi group of the Austronesian language family, and thus closely related to, among others, Buginese. In 2010, the Makassar language had 1.8 million native speakers. Makasar language has recognized 3 writing systems, like Makassar script (16-19 centuries), Serang (for religious purposes), Bugis script and Latin alphabet. Latin and Bugis script are the most widely used today.

The Makassarese live in the south‒west corner of the peninsula. Most of them are concentrated in the fertile coastal plain around the city of Makassar and to the south; these are the kabupatens (administrative districts) of Gowa and Takalar, considered the heartland of the Makassarese. Gowa also extends into the mountains which occupy the centre of the peninsula, but these are more sparsely populated. To the north of Makassar are the kabupatens of Maros and Pangkajene Kepulauan (Pangkep), which are densely populated with a mixture of Bugis and Makassarese. On the south coast are the kabupatens of Jeneponto and Bantaeng, whose inhabitants identify as Makassarese though their dialects are substantially different from that of Gowa and Takalar.

The Gowa dialect (also called Lakiung, the name of a district of Gowa which is now a suburb of Makassar) is considered a prestige variety, and it is this dialect which is described here (in fact this can be considered the default reading of ʻMakassareseʼ).

Ethnologue classifies the Makassar language as a language with level 6b (Threatened) on the EGIDS scale, which indicates that although this language is still commonly used in face-to-face conversations, the process of transmitting or teaching language naturally between generations has begun to be disrupted.

Discussion[edit]

The Makassarese script no longer used since 19th centuries. Latin alphabet and Buginese script most commonly used. --Han4299 (talk) 14:57, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Han4299: For "Barambang", "Barambang Pambicarang", "Dattarak", "Dattarak Pambicarang", "Panngukirik", "Pambicarang Panngukirik", what's the English (or Indonesian) equivalent? Thanks. In case you are translating from "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk", then I suggest you don't ask these additional namespaces, because those namespace are specifically for Wikisource.
Untuk "Barambang", "Barambang Pambicarang", "Dattarak", "Dattarak Pambicarang", "Panngukirik", "Pambicarang Panngukirik", apa padanan Indonesia (atau Inggrisnya)? Terima kasih. Jika ini merupakan terjemahan dari "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk", maka sebenarnya tidak diperlukan, karena ruang nama seperti contoh tersebut hanya terkhusus untuk Wikisource.
