This language has been verified as eligible. The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval. If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval.A committee member provided the following comment: Project is eligible, though we'd like to see more current activity. And as @Prosfilaes notes below, this is far from ready for final approval. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:44, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

- The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
- The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
- The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What | Value | Example / Explanation |
---|
Proposal | ||
---|---|---|
Language code | af (SIL, Glottolog) | A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ... |
Language name | Afrikaans | Language name in English |
Language name | Afrikaans | Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ... |
Language Wikidata item | Q14196 - item has currently the following values:
|
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed. |
Directionality | LTR | Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)? |
Site URL | af.wikisource.org | langcode.wikiproject.org |
Settings | ||
---|---|---|
Project name | "Wikisource" in your language | |
Project namespace | usually the same as the project name | |
Project talk namespace | "Wikisource talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace) | |
Enable uploads | no | Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons. If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons. |
Optional settings | ||
Project logo | This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation). | |
Default project timezone | Africa/Cape Town | "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones) |
Additional namespaces | For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk". | |
Additional settings | Anything else that should be set | |
Proposal
[edit]Afrikaans have 15-23 million speakers (Over 7 million native), it's one of the official languages of South Africa, there are thousands of books are published in Afrikaans each year, the entire Bible was translated to Afrikaans in 1933, we have Afrikaans linguistic documents, bibliographical books, teaching materials, and more contents that are suitable for Wikisource! There are four existing Afrikaans Wikimedia projects: Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikibooks and Wikiquote, plus we have Wikinews test at incubator:Wn/af, Wikiversity test at v:mul:Tuisblad, so why not giving a chance to start Wikisource in this languages too? --117.14.250.35 05:42, 27 June 2019 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]There is a Wikisource place for Afrikaans: https://wikisource.org/wiki/Main_Page/Afrikaans . It's far from the point that it needs its own domain. The 1933 Bible is an example of the problem: w:en:BB Keet was one of the translators, and died in 1974, meaning it's still copyrighted in South Africa and pretty much world-round. Afrikaans just doesn't have the wealth of pre-20th century works that form the main body of public domain works under modern copyright laws. A dedicated group could still add a lot of pages to that link, at which point this might be worth redoing.
I might point out that Wikisources tend to be broader than Wikipedias, and Dutch and Afrikaans could well cohabitate on one Wikisource. But there doesn't seem to be much love there, so I'm guessing it won't happen.--Prosfilaes (talk) 04:27, 29 June 2019 (UTC)
