I suggest to incorporate a link to the w:Unicode Collation Algorithm Wikipedia article. Dr Bug (Vladimir V. Medeyko) 19:00, 12 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Good idea, and done. Philippe 19:33, 12 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ages

[edit]

I think listing the age of the candidates enables pointless prejudice, so I don't think there should be such a field. The candidates are kosher as long as they've confirmed they're at least 18. Signed, your friendly neighborhood MessedRocker. 05:28, 15 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, some people consider it important for their choise. Although I am not one of them, I support that the information that is considered important is given. Especially when it is such a small effort. Effeietsanders 06:34, 15 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I would have thought that a candidate's experience of life was an important factor.--217.42.209.232 07:42, 1 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

"Board election/2007" in instructions for where to create your candidate statement

[edit]

I'm assuming that that was a typo, but I'd rather not fix it myself, in case I'm being dense.--SarekOfVulcan 21:24, 15 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

You're quite right, thank you. I've fixed it. Philippe 22:15, 15 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

protection

[edit]

Hi,

I protected the page belonging to this talkpage for anonymous users. Please revert me if the election committee disagrees. Maybe it would even be wiser to protect the page at all? There is nothing that should be changed here directly anyway. Effeietsanders 22:02, 15 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I have no objection. Philippe 22:15, 15 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Just a coincidence, or...

[edit]

All of the candidates are male as I write this... interesting. 68.239.187.97 05:30, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I want to translate the candidates' pages to Hebrew.

[edit]

What do I do? Ofek/en:Ofek

Thank you for your interest, Ofek. For the main page, a standard procedure is

  1. Create a link on Template:Other languages/Board elections/2007/Candidates (add "he" somewhere)
  2. Click the link and put the language text you would like to translate (use {{subst::[target file name]}} , if from English, {{subst::Board elections/2007/Candidates/en}}
  3. Save it.
  4. Translate it.

For each candidate you can do the similar, starting from creating a red link on Template:Election candidates 2007/quickview ML.

If you have any question about translation, you would like to visit Babylon. Cheers, --Aphaia 09:05, 18 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

1200 characters limit

[edit]

Presumably this is 1200 letters, symbols and punctuation marks? Or should I count wiki formatting code such as '' and wikilinks too? --Kingboyk 14:05, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

My current understanding (and I hope that other ElecComm members will correct me if I'm wrong) is that letters, symbols, and punctuation marks count. Wiki code does not, unless it's carried to an extreme, or an attempt to subvert the system in some way. Philippe 14:43, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
It is my understanding too. Letters, symbols, punctuation are counted. Space, wiki code aren't unless (snipped). --Aphaia 14:46, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Lovely, thank you. Seems that I'm well over 1200 anyway, so I'll have to sharpen the knife now... I'll post my fuller statement privately, per the rules. Thanks again for the help. --Kingboyk 14:49, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Election FAQ/Candidates links at http://wikimedia.spi-inc.org/index.php/Special:Boardvote/vote (I'm loging there from bgwiki) are linking to the 2006 pages. I don't know who could fix this but it's a good idea... :) --Nk 08:56, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thank you for noticing us. I expect our dev soon fixes it. But weird, from the link you placed, I am back to this year FAQ ... could you please give us details, Nk?
  1. Did you get the correct = this year candidate list? Or the last year one too?
  2. Do you now get still the wrong one? How about from here? And from bgwiki?
Thanks. --Aphaia 09:36, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Right now it's OK from enwiki. From bgwiki I don't have any links but I have voted already. From meta I don't have voting rights so it's still another version of the page (no links of course). --Nk 11:41, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Voting accessibility

[edit]

As a semi-involved Wikimedian, I haven't voted before and I probably won't vote this year for this reason: any voting requires some overhead effort and knowledge of understanding the candidates. As much as I admire, I'm not willing to spend that much time for my vote which I might misplace. I think I'd rather not vote than vote on something I don't understand.

Perhaps WMF wishes that users like me, who don't understand the process and don't want to dedicate a few hours figuring it out, should not vote. That's fine. Really. But in the email sent out, don't complain that WMF has a lower voter turn out. And remember that such a preference of the elite users won't represent the average users like me. Again, that's fine with me as long as WMF is aware of this.

However, if WMF does wish to change this, one way to rectify this could be to change the Candidate Presentations on this page to act more like scorecards. They could concisely cite where they stand on issues like advertising, supporting sister sites, etc.

Thanks. --Ephilei 04:29, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ephilei, thank you for your interest. I would like to clarify that the email that was sent was not an official WMF email, but rather one from an individual wikimedian, speaking only for himself. Thank you for your suggestion about candidate presentations - I'll add it to the list of things we'll talk about when planning for next year. Philippe 05:45, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Philippe for pointing that out. The email certainly looked like an official one, but I was puzzled that it came from an individual and not a WP email address. I am also in the undecided category, all the candidates look worthy but I am not going to vote 'all' just to keep the statistics up... It is also confusing that a new login seems to be required, cannot I use my WP user details (Dsergeant)? 81.157.212.26 10:38, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Personally I think the election runs for too long. So many questions are asked, which makes it harder and harder for interested people who don't already know the candidates to make an informed decision. They either read of all it, which is unlikely, or make a decision which isn't totally informed. Or, like Ephilei, they pass on by. --Kingboyk 11:33, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm interested to read in Ausir's candidate statement: "I've done for Microsoft and Adobe". Many people will be very pleased to hear that!--Nyelvmark 15:19, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm also here because of an email that I thought was official. Now that I'm here and doing my best to plow through the stack of Q&A's in time to vote before close, however, I'd like to make a suggestion for future elections. For everyone who is going to ask the same questions of every single candidate: how about making a separate page for each of those questions? Then the candidates can put their answers on that page, where I can easily compare responses. That would make it a lot easier for me to focus on the questions that interest me and bypass the rest. Then, if there are questions for specific candidates, those can go on the individual candidate pages where they are now. It might make it more time-consuming for the candidates to do it that way, but hey, they should be trying to demonstrate their level of commitment to us, yes? :) 68.51.208.100 08:39, 7 July 2007 (UTC) (Nerwen on English Wikipedia)Reply

Pedantic grammar moan...

[edit]

Hi there, not sure if this is the correct talk page, but at the moment there is a notice at the page top on the English wikipedia stating, "All eligible community members are invited to vote in the Wikimedia Board Election, which will close in less than four hours at 23:59 (UTC)." Could someone correct "less than" to "fewer than"? :) Cheers, DWaterson 20:37, 7 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

less is for continuous objects, fewer is for discrete. My gf was fanatical about this exact example of fewer or less! Hours is continuous, so... you fill in the blank! Mathmo 06:11, 8 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Interesting. By the way, for English Wikipedia Sitenotice, the proper place is w:MediaWiki talk:Sitenotice, for your information. --Aphaia 10:06, 8 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

I've merged in the transcluded subpages to simplify maintenance and to bring the page under the ifexist limit (it had 577 ifexist calls). The edit histories of the substituted templates are shown below. —{admin} Pathoschild 18:28:22, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
