Early freeze[edit]

Read-only[edit]
@Johan (WMF): I don’t think the read-only time should be in the section “Problems”. I think problems are incidents, i.e. unplanned bad things. Planned things should be somewhere else, for example in the Changes later this week section. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 22:13, 17 June 2021 (UTC)
- Tacsipacsi: Yes, this is a fair argument. The way I've thought about it (because we've moved them around a bit, as there's no obvious perfect solution) is that this is a problem for the editors. It's not a new tool, it's not changes to how a tool works, it's not something that needs to be fixed or adapted: it's just that the wikis can't be edited, which will get in their way. So while it's not a problem from our perspective, just some planned maintenance, I've figured that it should be construed as one from the editing perspective. - @Johan (WMF): Of course we should see it from the editors’ perspective, but it still doesn’t look right for me in the problems section. Thinking about planned vs unplanned, what just came to my mind is the tense: unplanned things (incidents) are always past tense, while this piece of news is future tense. Changes later this week is obviously (near) future, so from the time perspective, it’s definitely the best fit. If section titles wouldn’t need to be copied over manually every week, I’d say create a new section for planned maintenance, as such things usually happen multiple times a year. However, having to copy it just for it to be dropped at least 45 times out of 50, is not something I can wholeheartedly support. 🙁 —Tacsipacsi (talk) 19:02, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
- Hrm. That might actually be worth considering, given how often we've had these updates lately. The section does't need to be manually added, just manually removed every time it's not used. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 19:15, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Johan (WMF): You as the newsletter’s creator don’t need to manually add the section, but translators (including you as a Swedish translator) still do need to manually paste the translation for each and every recurring translation unit; at least I don’t know about transcluding templates having become supported lately. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 00:12, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
