Additional communication channels?

[edit]

I am just wondering if the organisers are planning to set up any additional communication channels, e.g. a channel on Discord or Telegram to make it easier to interact and feel part of a team / project? Or are you planning to just reply on talk pages? We could have one Discord channel for each of the different language Wikipedias that are participating. I haven't yet used Discord myself but I believe it's the recommended chat application by Wikimedia Foundation. EMsmile (talk) 05:17, 4 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@EMsmile: As far as I know Discord is considered unofficial, and Telegram and IRC channels also exist. The more official mechanism might be to create a Wikimedia Meet team. --Anon423 (talk) 01:05, 15 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
High both@Anon423 and EMsmile: ! We opted for not creating a channel this round because of complexity, bandwidth and offwiki communication most benefits newcomers (who are being directed to community-run events where they will have their own channels). If folks want to organize something, I am supportive of it and can join -- but we aren't prioritizing that. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 20:08, 16 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Rule clarification

[edit]

@HynekJanac, Simranjeet Sidhu, Elisardojm, Mohammad Murtaza, and احمد سامي: See the update in the log WikiForHumanRights_Challenge/Log. Apologies if it was not clear. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 20:24, 16 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Astinson (WMF), I have fixed my points, sorry for the misunderstanding :). --Elisardojm (talk) 10:46, 17 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Any challenge for commons?

[edit]

could there be a photo/audio/video challenge for c:?--RZuo (talk) 21:03, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@RZuoThere is going to be a special category for Wiki Loves Earth this year, but they haven't announced it yet. You can also earn some points on the challenge by working with media.Astinson (WMF) (talk) 22:13, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Additional languages

[edit]

Is there any chance we can add a column to the list of articles for Turkish (tr) language? --Superyetkin (talk) 08:42, 20 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Done @Superyetkin: Astinson (WMF) (talk) 13:57, 22 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Include view rates in the table

[edit]

I think the view rates should be in included in the lists of articles so that people who want to focus on "high impact" / high view rate articles immediately know where to focus their energies on. In general, I feel we sometimes get too bogged down in tiny sub-sub-articles that get e.g. 10 views per day but neglect the higher level articles that get 5000 views per day. In my opinion those are the articles we should focus on (more). Would probably have more impact overall. EMsmile (talk) 02:02, 22 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi @EMsmile that is very hard to maintain in the current table format, and folks are translating what they think is easy or straighforward with the tools we have access to. Since most of the contributors are experienced Wikipedians, in this round we are encouraging folks to focus on what makes sense for them, and if that is pageviews are their prioritization strategy thats great! Astinson (WMF) (talk) 19:01, 23 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Question about the scope

[edit]

Greetings, I would like to know, for example, is I translate an article about a human rights activist (with no relation to the environment, but who has fought for any other human right, like education or health), would it count? Or the scope is only for articles related to the environment? Tuga1143 (talk) 23:56, 22 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Tuga1143 for the challenge/competition, we encourage folks to stay in the general realm of the theme if they can (i.e. a lot of these topics around environmental health are really intersectional with other issues like racism, poverty, health and education) -- for example, its hard to talk about a youth rights advocate right now without the climate crisis, even if that is not their primary topic. Right to water and health often both have environmental components (pollution, etc) -- I encourage you to explore those spaces as closely as possible (for example, the SDG articles list by @EMsmile https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/SDGs/Communication_of_environment_SDGs#Wikipedia_articles_to_be_improved ). Also a lot of indigenous rights communities are talking about these issues from an environmental concerns, but from a different perspective (i.e. rights of minority communities). For the broader campaign, communities are interpreting it differently so feel free to make edits with the hashtag for the campaign in your edit summaries so we can track.
Are you looking for biographies in particular? Or are you open to other themes topics? Astinson (WMF) (talk) 19:22, 23 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Also if you are looking for sources, I am trying to add them to the Wikidata items as I can, Astinson (WMF) (talk) 19:42, 23 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hi Astinson (WMF), I mainly just translate what's already available in english to my language (portuguese), so don't worry, I will continue to do it inside the scope of the challenge and with what you said to me. Thank you so much for the answer! Kind regards, Tuga1143 (talk) 12:27, 24 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Oh, and I forgot to ask another thing: by "5 references", you mean 5 different sources, or would it be accepted an article with one source with 5 references to it along the article text? Tuga1143 (talk) 12:37, 24 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
5 distinct sources -- the hope is to have something that can stand independently in any language Wikipedia, and that maintains a high standard for research. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 20:54, 26 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much. Tuga1143 (talk) 23:10, 26 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Question about wikidata statements

[edit]

Can we get points for adding more than 3 referenced statements to a Wikidata item? Joofjoof (talk) 05:21, 25 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi! @Joofjoof So you can do 3 referenced statements multiple time on one item, yes. There is a max on the number of times you can do that however. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 20:54, 26 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Question about adding images

[edit]

Astinson (WMF), how should points be counted for adding images? Let's see if I do it right... If I add new images to different articles, I add up all the images that I have added and divide that number by 5 to obtain the points I have obtained, correct? Additionally, do I get a point for each article on the list of proposals in which I have added an image? All this with a limit of 48 points, of course. Could you check if the image section of my score is correct? --Elisardojm (talk) 10:52, 27 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

And another question. Do we also have to count the images that are included in the articles that are translated or just the images that are added to the articles? --Elisardojm (talk) 12:06, 27 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Elisardojm If the image is already in the article you are translating -- no extra points. The goal is to add high quality images with good captions where there otherwise wouldn't.
And yes, tally up the number of images and divide by 5 + bonus points for articles on the list. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 12:32, 27 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Points for articles greater than 20k

[edit]

Current rule for calculating point is
If you created a new article:

1 point for creation or translation of an article with at least 5 references. 1 point for the first 5000 bytes added. 1 point for the second 5000 bytes added. 1 point for any additional bytes greater than 3000 bytes. You can have up to 4 points for a translated article.

For example if we translate an artcle from English to Urdu language i.e صحت کا حق (volume:52,940 bytes) What are total points for this article?. Thanks --Mohammad Murtaza Zaidi (talk)
