New process[edit]

During Wikimania 2017 in Montreal some members of the Wikimania Committee had a meeting to discuss a new process. Attended the meeting Aug. 13, 2017 Andrew Lih, Phoebe Ayers, Iolanda Pensa, Ivan Martinez, Deror Lin, Ellie Young (and thanks Ellie for the notes I'm using here).

Timeline

  • Early September: Draft a call for Expression of Interest (approve by committee)
  • 9/15-Oct 15: publicized
  • Nov 1-Jan 1: overview of the possible locations, proposals reviewed and recommend host to WMF.

We considered that a letter of intent about why they would like to host Wikimania could be useful to highlight what kind of event they envision, how they plan to leverage the impact of hosting Wikimania e.g., addressing an issue in their area/region, etc.; their team.

We welcome suggestions for other groups/people that should be contacted about hosting.

Among the criteria we will also consider:

  • Immigration and support for Visa process
  • overall budget (including distance and travel costs)

During the meeting we also stressed that we should strive to be transparent about why WMF and Steering committee select a particularly venues and a checklist might be useful.

The Wikimania committee will meet in September

  • to update about Wikimania Cape Town and to see how they can support it
  • the commette needs also to nominate a new chair; need have a way to retire people and bring new people in. And the committee needs to define more precisely its role and tasks.

Personally I think the committee needs to post on meta everything they discuss unless there are issues related to privacy or topics which needs to remain confidential for specific reasons. --iopensa (talk) 15:21, 13 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Additional applications[edit]

Applicants for 2019 so far look really thin. According to this announcement, 2019 is scheduled to held Wikimania in Western, Southern or Northern Europe. Only Stockholm and Gothenburg apply to this criteria from the cities mentioned. So I think we should put more cities of these regions into consideration, shouldn't we? The German-speaking Wikipedia is the second largest after the English, including its community. I think there should be an event.

Vienna, Basel, Frankfurt, Zürich, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin/Potsdam, Luxembourg, Bonn, Leipzig, Schwerin, Rostock, Graz, Dresden, Salzburg, ... Some of the German speaking places should definitely be considered. Cheers, Horst-schlaemma (talk) 07:40, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

What about Prague? A couple of strong applications is all we really need. And Germany hosts WikiCon most years. If more folks want to organize for sure. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 13:35, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
During Wikimania 2017 we had a meeting about the process but we did not discuss rotation. I put the topic on the agenda for our next meeting Wikimania Committee/Minutes/2017-12. Thanks. iopensa (talk) 16:09, 29 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Update[edit]

It would be great if someone from the organising team at WMSE could update this page to at least show the final decision, instead of still having a list of features for the candidates. We're starting to link this page as one of the prizes for a photo contest ;-) Braveheart (talk) 20:30, 5 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, everything about selection process should be moved to new subpage or removed. This main page should give information about the future event. Stryn (talk) 14:09, 31 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed Gothenburg so that it is clear what city it will be in. I will have a look at the page the coming weeks (as soon as a couple of things with hard deadlines have been finalized). If you have an idea for structure/headlines feel free to add them. John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 12:34, 1 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If it's too early to update the site/page, is it possible to know some details here? The exact dates of the conference would be very helpful. Thanks, Ynhockey (talk) 10:20, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The exact dates is August 14-18. Ainali (talk) 19:34, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki[edit]

Will there be no Wikimania Wiki for 2019? Marcus Cyron (talk) 12:28, 9 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know, but I find this practice of setting up a new wiki for each Wikimania ridiculous. Can't we have a single Wikimania wiki and use subpages? Or even use Meta with subpages? Anyone knows the reasons that led to the decision of having a new wiki for each Wikimania? --Felipe (talk) 22:31, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There is https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page that's going to be a central Wikimania wiki and next year it will be wiki for Wikimania 2019. Stryn (talk) 06:17, 14 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Call for Submissions - Deadline?[edit]

Hi all,

I wanted to ask if there is already a tentative deadline for the call for submissions (of talks / sessions) at Wikimania 20019.

Thanks Cristina --Criscod (talk) 09:48, 22 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Organizers, friendly ping. When do you expect the CfP to go up? :) --Ori Livneh (talk) 17:24, 5 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Is the venue settled or not?[edit]

Says the venue will be Sweden but all the text seems to say this is up in the air? Would like to book tickets and holiday from work if poss. Mrspaceowl (talk) 21:25, 2 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Mrspaceowl: According to the Wikimania site, it will be held at en:Aula Magna (Stockholm University). ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 04:56, 3 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent. Thanks for the clarification. :) Mrspaceowl (talk) 10:45, 3 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
