Activities and Strategies[edit]

Content Creation and Community Engagement[edit]

A2K works with and supports Indian communities, affiliates, and individuals to participate in different activities. A2K have conducted online events where people contribute to local Wiki projects, and common project like Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. The goal of these events is to provide a platform for communities to collaborate, whether as a group or individually. Participants can create new content, edit existing content, and work with others in organized activities. These activities help the communities understand what kind of contributions are valuable and important.

Activities

The Indic Wiki Improve-a-thon 2022 was a 20-day-long online event that took place from 15th December 2022 to 5th January 2023. Its purpose was to encourage communities to collaborate and improve content in their own languages. The event was open to various projects and centered around the theme "Azadi ka Mahotsav". Many individuals and language communities participated, with a total of 21 participants expressing their interest. Three language communities, namely Odia Wikimedians User Group, Wikimedians of Kerala, and Wikimedians of Santali Language User Group, joined together to contribute. The event encompassed 7 languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Malayalam, Odia, Punjabi, and Santali. The main focus of the event was to edit Wikipedia and Wikidata.

The Women's Month Datathon on Commons was a collaborative campaign that took place between CIS-A2K and Commons Photographers User Group. The campaign spanned from March 21st to March 31st, 2023, and was dedicated to celebrating Women's Month and recognizing the achievements of women worldwide. During the ten-day event, the primary focus was on Wikimedia Commons. Participants actively engaged in tasks such as organizing structured data, refining categories, and enhancing image descriptions, with the goal of enhancing content related to women on Wikimedia Commons.

This event 'Women's Month Datathon on Commons' was a joint initiative by CIS-A2K and the Commons Photographers User Group to engage the community. With the help of this event, A2K brought a new partnership with Commons Photographers User Group and an individual or Malayalam community member Jinoy Jacob. The campaign aimed to honor Women's Month and celebrate the achievements of remarkable women worldwide. The event centered around Wikimedia Commons and spanned 10 days, focusing on organizing structured data, categories, and descriptions. The session was open to all interested Wikimedians, and 21 participants registered and actively participated in the event.

The next approach employed by A2K is organizing online calls to involve people actively. These calls serve as a platform for communities to listen to speakers and interact with them on topics that A2K deems relevant and important for community members. The calls take place on Zoom during the evening, allowing a larger number of people to participate. A2K selects the topics based on observations of the communities' needs. the aim to hold two calls per month.

On 3rd June 2023 at 6:00 pm, the inaugural session of the India Community Monthly Engagement Calls took place. The call focused on the theme "Let's Connect" and featured two speakers: Jessica Stephenson, Learning and Evaluation Program Officer at WMF, and Chinmayee Mishra, a representative of the Let's Connect Working Group. A total of 19 participants actively took part in the call. There was a different approach with Let's connect, Let's connect invite people to share some unique idea or skills with others and A2K approached Let's connect, so, Indic Wikimedians could understand this initiative's focus, interest and importance.

Takeaways of Indian Wikimedians from EduWiki Conference & Hackathon, an edition of WikiConverse India organized by A2K. This event focused on encourage collaborative discussions within the Indian language Wikimedia community, with a specific emphasis on the insights and experiences shared by participants from the recent EduWiki Conference and Wikimedia Hackathon. The speakers delved into the important takeaways and key learnings from these international conferences, specifically those relevant to India. This interactive session, the purpose of it was to engage in enriching dialogue, exchange ideas, and explore ways to leverage the knowledge and expertise gained from EduWiki and the Hackathon to drive growth in the Wikimedia movement. This event presented a unique opportunity to connect with fellow participants, expand network, and contribute to the development of Wikimedia in India. The initiative was share learning experiences for volunteers and by volunteers.

Skill Development Programs[edit]

The Indian Community Capacity Development program draws inspiration from the Community Capacity Development program, spearheaded by Asaf (WMF). CIS-A2K has adopted this concept and is currently working to implement it within India. The original initiative, Community Capacity Development, aimed to identify the needs of various Wikimedia communities, devise strategies for enhancing their capabilities, and then execute targeted actions to bolster these capacities in communities showing particular interest. Similarly, CIS-A2K is engaged in similar endeavors with Indian communities and User groups. A2K's focus on activities, expansion, leadership cultivation, capacity building, and more. This program is for to all Indian communities seeking progress and making efforts to achieve or obtain something to establish healthy user groups.

The program has started last year only and had calls with two User Groups:

  • User Group of Santali Language
  • Odia Wikimedians User Group

One day training Sessions[edit]

After running Skill development program, A2K has started training sessions during an edit-a-thon. There was two training sessions conducted under two ongoing activities International Mother Language Day 2023 Datathon Session and Women's Month Datathon on Commons/Online Session|Women's Month Datathon on Commons.

    • International Mother Language Day 2023 Datathon Session

As part of the event, an online session was held, featuring experts who demonstrated how to add appropriate categories to existing images and effectively use structured data. There were approx. 15 participants in the session which was presented by Jinoy, a Malayalam community member. The International Mother Language Day 2023 Datathon in India involved a collaborative effort by participants, including Amrita, Anjali, Punam Kumari, Sangram Kesari, Gayatri, Rajdeep Ghuman, Mallikarjuna, Anushree, Harpreet, Jinoy, Nitesh, Manisha, Sridhar, Babu Basiya, and Suyash Divwedi. This event focused on Wikidata, a platform that helps organize and link structured data to enhance knowledge sharing. Key tools utilized during the event were Quick Statements, Mix n Match, Petscan. Participants engaged in various tasks to contribute to Wikidata, with the goal of enriching the representation of different languages. The event emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting mother languages.

Women's Month Datathon on Commons Online Session organized by CIS-A2K and Commons:Commons Photographers User Group, aimed to celebrate Women's Month and encourage contributions to Wikimedia Commons. The event training took place on 22nd March 2023 and witnessed active participation from a total of 21 individuals. Subsequently, Suyash Dwivedi took over for a presentation after the call introduction. The presentation covered adding Depicts to images, Translating data and captions in different languages, Adding relevant sub-categories to images, Instructions for avoiding bots and red link categories, Emphasis on meaningful contributions rather than image uploads, Participants were encouraged to reach out via email or the talk page for further sessions or inquiries.

CIS-A2K organized a comprehensive series of Wikidata Training Sessions for the Santali community, aimed at elevating the capacity and skills of Santali Wikimedians to effectively contribute to Wikidata, a collaborative knowledge graph. Led by trainers Jinoy Jacob, Satpal Dandiwal, and Tulspal Kaur, the sessions covered a wide range of topics. Beginning with a foundational understanding of Wikidata's significance and components, participants delved into data entry, editing techniques, querying with SPARQL, integrating Wikidata with Wikipedia, and utilizing tools like OpenRefine. The sessions not only equipped the Santali community with technical proficiency but also encouraged them to play an active role in safeguarding and disseminating Santali knowledge.
