Translation[edit]

JM[edit]

I'd be glad to help if I can, but remember, while I'm good at translating from most Romance languages (and to some extent German) into English, I'm not such great shakes going the other way. The only foreign language where I'm really comfortable is Spanish (and even there I can't pass for native). -- Jmabel 15:05, 30 Aug 2004 (UTC)

m:Translation_requests:
  1. links the master, but not the versions for the languages being translated into.
  2. doesn't have anywhere for anyone to sign up to take responsibility for a task (to avoid redundancy)

Is there material needing translation into English? Or what? -- 20:20, 4 Sep 2004 (UTC)

we have content from fr and de needing translation. But most translation will be out of en:. +sj+
I'm sorry, maybe I'm being dense, but I can't identify specific tasks to be done or where to sign up to do them.08:45, 7 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Tomos[edit]

Hi. Thanks for the email. I've taken a look at the press release and newsletter.

Here is what I think I would do: make an announcement about them on ja., and ask for participation. Regarding the newsletter, I can pitch in some, or I can help translating other japanese wikipedian's contribution into English (though, yes, my life is hectic these days). I will also join the translation effort. Am I getting it right?

Well, I better catch up with the mailinglist first, probably.

By the way, User:Electric goat is an active, competent, trustable, and nice wikipedian. I worked with him/ had discussions on various tasks/issues on japanese wikipedia... one of many wikipedians you can count on, I think. Tomos 09:52, 4 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Sorry for the late reply, I was on vacation. I can offer an hour or two per week, exams coming closer... And if Mav is interested in my learning project, why did he not write me? I will leave a message for him. Get-back-world-respect 06:03, 9 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I can translate from english, spanish, french, catalan or portuguese, but I think there are better writers in those languages. Furthermore, as most Germans who use wikipedia speak English anyways I do not attach a very high importance to translating the newsletter. I will create the english version of the w:ligretto article now. Get-back-world-respect 08:05, 9 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for the response. It is true that most German Wikipedians could read the english newsletter, but it would be a shame not to have a german version for that reason... visitors to the site who read german but not english should be able to read it. +sj+ 20:31, 9 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Swedish translation of press release done
It's "done" only in a very rough sense. I really need to get some sleep now:-) I have a few questions I'll try to find answers for tomorrow, I'll be back on that. Cheers! // OlofE 23:32, 7 Sep 2004 (UTC)

(I'll just add my second reply here) - I noticed the newsletter translation that was pending. I'm still undecided on whether to devote my time to that (gosh but doing proper translation is rough work!). Anyway, I actually do hope to get back to this, because we do have some rather interesting developments happening on sv:. Nobody but ourselves know but we're going to break 40000 in a day or two, very close to that one million mark for the whole project, and this - together with the million article release - has made a few of us think a little about the reality we face as a maturing but undeniably small-language wikipedia. I have a feeling we're going to be doing some firsts for other projects here, things the bigger languages never had to do. We have to let this pan out in itself first though, before we start advertising its greatness... But we're seeing a few busy weeks ahead! So, I'll be back, but I can't make any promises right now. Cheers, // OlofE 22:45, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

We can handle some discussion during the weekend - I won't be around all the time but I'll try to answer or forward to others. If you need speedy answers, you can drop a question at our village pump, I think you'll get pretty quick answers. // OlofE 05:44, 11 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Hi again - I'm about to start the sv: newsletter translation (tonight hopefully) and I believe there will be one or two others to help getting it done as well. We hit 40k articles on sv: this morning btw - http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_South was #40000 (I think that's the official tally - 9.22 am local time iirc). You asked for "interesting projects" - the official projects listed on the page for that purpose are pretty standard I believe and none of them stand out as exceptionally active or having higher quality than the others. We have a project for church buildings, one for bandy, and one for runestones, those are perhaps the ones least likely to be found in other wikipedias (particularly the last two are pretty specific to Swedish culture). Noted among users the past weeks is the efforts of one relatively new user who is documenting weaving and related techniques, with text and photographs, this is in my opinion a quite extraordinary effort. I know nada about the topic but I have a hunch other wikipedias could find this material useful (at least once it trickles out to english or some other larger language). Do let me know if you need questions answered for the newsletter, I'll do my best to help out. // OlofE 10:35, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Olof, this all sounds great... There were space limitations, and only a few langs ended up with projects listed in the current newsletter. But there will be monthly supplements, and these sound like good projects to include (particularly this last; useful images are the best kind). +sj+

JM2[edit]

I did a hunk of this -- see m:Translation requests/NL-1/Es: -- but I am not willing to continue...

Thank you kindly for the feedback. The newsletter shouldn't come across as self-indulgent or dull...
  1. I find the material boring. I'm here to write encyclopedia articles, not to stroke someone's ego.
...nor as stroking anyone's (or any project's) ego. I'll see what I can do about that.
  2. The content is not written with translation in mind: there are a lot of colloquialisms.
Awfully true. We have been weeding them out slowly; from the press release as well. There will be contribution guidelines for future submissions which explain how to write for translation; your comments on those guidelines will be most welcome.
  3. Despite my repeatedly telling you I was only volunteering to translate into English, you gave me an English-to-Spanish task to do.
I left you a note last week when there was French-to-English translation to do; I regret that we had only a page of content in other languages. By the time you wrote me (above) saying you were still willing to help, there was only En-to-other translation left. +sj+ 20:31

Fruggo[edit]

Sj, When is the newsletter going to be published? Right now I'm the only one working on the Dutch version, and that takes a lot of time. I'm trying to get help on nl:, but I'm not sure it will be finished on short notice. Fruggo 13:55, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Swedish translation of NL[edit]

I've started the translation. Hopefully some others are going to join in. To contact me, try my Swedish userpage.
Yrs / Mats 09:33, 18 Sep 2004 (UTC)

There is a problem concerning list-bullets in the Swedish translation. They seem to appear arbitrarily. What is the problem? The mixture of wiki and HTML syntax is beyond me. / Mats Halldin 19:08, 20 Sep 2004 (UTC)

(Cross-WP-notifications worked - Nice!) The first two pages are ready for publishing and I'm working on the third page right now. I'm the only one that worked on it though, and it is a fair guess that no one else is going to have a look at it. The third page is probably going to be done in a day or two. Maybe I'll work on the following pages later. / Mats Halldin 21:28, 20 Sep 2004 (UTC)

de: translation[edit]

Hi. I apologize, but I rarely log in here and wasn't aware of your request on my talk page.

For de: translations: I learned some German in order to browse articles for my graduate degree. But I'm far from fluent for reliable translations. My french is somewhat better, but still not fully reliable. That's good for WikiSource because it's about uploading texts, not nec. writing original ones.

If you once in a while need Eng-Heb or Heb-Eng I would be happy to do that for you in a snap, reliably.

Dovi 10:07, 19 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Do you put a special selection of translators in the left part of newsletter's page 1 or can I add me freely? I am working on the it translation, the work will go on slowly since I didn't found many people to help me and I am quite busy these days. I hope however to finish the translation to the end of the week. Chopinhauer 02:01, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)

sj Still working the cover with your last email under my eyes. In the same time, I'm having a look at the contents design, especially to put colors that will be in harmony with the cover and to put new icons or arranged old ones. You can see my attempts in progress at User:Jean-Christophe_Chazalette/NLContents. But of course my priority is the cover. villy 07:15, 6 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Press release and newsletter[edit]

Regarding the press release: I have not taken part in the discussion, and have not been following it enough to know whether the outcome is that we go along or do not go along.

Regarding the newsletter: Unless you want some very angry parts in it, I'd better not participate. I am not in a good mood. - Andre Engels 12:15, 5 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Your message re newsletter[edit]

Hehe, so long as it doesn't require translation :) A singularly thankless task imo. But sure, if you need a general overview of stuff please feel free to call on me. User:sjc 04:40, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Continuing Copyedit of Newsletter[edit]

I am still copyediting the Newsletter. Certain of the newer sections, such as 3, require many changes. I will continue, until I am done -- unless I hear from you. I am aware that translators are supposedly translating the Newsletter, right now. In the future, I would check for redundant entries, an excess of parentheses and colons/semi-colons, the lack of a comma before the word, "which," misplaced adverbs --- and all the usual mistakes.

Yes. I'm semiactive due to school. How can I help you? From your content here, it appears to be translation related. - Wguynes 01:26, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Copyedit Status[edit]

Thank you for alerting me that the Newsletter has moved. The changes to Sections 6 and 8 have not been entered yet, and one paragraph in 4 is self-contradictory. I will get the changes noted. I don't think I can access the Foundation website to write on it, however. RoseParks 03:06, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

you can now.  :)

Thanks a lot for your words of esteem on Wikimedia Quarto, I do appreciate them. And congratulations for you own tremendous work, I take the whole thing for a success ! villy 06:29, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Italian Chapter[edit]

Hello,

I've just turned your msg to the Village Pump of italian Wikipedia, the bigger of italian projects, asking for help. I'm confident in finding someone to create the PDF. As soon as I have something about the creation of Wikimedia Italia, I'll let you know. For time being, we have just registered http://www.wikimedia.it, and we are trying to get back wikipedia.it, already taken by someone else.

You can address any request and/or comment to me.

See you,

Blakwolf 12:49, 1 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Ok, I've been told by Anthere to put the article about the italian chapter directly in the Quarto international news section. I suppose she meant to write that in english, which isn't a problem, especially if someone will review my horrible writing :) - But I've just finish translating the NL, and it's going to be published. Will that be a problem? - Regards, Blakwolf 05:55, 5 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Sorry, there was a misunderstanding Blakwolf. I meant to put it in italian in the italian quarto. But if this is available in english as well, I will be happy. However, it is not necessary. Thanks Anthere
I put a draft on Italian Chapter here. Let me now what do you think. -- Blakwolf 16:19, 5 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Quatro It[edit]

Hi Sj, just now I try to proofread the first page of Italian Quatro and wonder what you meant "there English words are left". Except the word newsletter, iirc some English words imported into Italian are used there but i think it might be OK ... as for newsletter it is not an entry of my dictionary and I don't have any convince it should be called so-and-so. BTW Blakwolf made translatios for the foundation site but I leave them on meta asking other translators to proofedit; recently I found some typos in Japanese content on the foundation site and became carefully (or awkward).

I hope tomorrow after or before the editorial meeting we will have a short time to discuss how we can develop the translation structure for the foundation site, including proofediting (check by more than two persons, if posible, and so on). Hoping to see you tommorow. Cheers. --Aphaia 15:10, 5 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi, I have a question your change on Wikimedia:Wikimedia Quarto/1/It-3, specially about date replacing Aug 31 with Sep 1. IIRC Translation requests/NL-1/Updates says Aug 31 was the right date ...? If Sep 1 is correct, other languages edition should be chanbed too. Thanks. --Aphaia 07:03, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)

From it.* to Quarto ;-)[edit]

Hi Sj,
sorry for my delay..
here M/ wrote a brief summary about Bolzano meetup. Is it too long/short or..?
About Italian chapter:
After long discussions on it.wiki, there was a first meetup last November with some german wikipedians too. The focus is finding the best kind of non profit (onlus) association, according to italian laws, which can grant a "tax-free" status. German wikipedians shared their experience and give useful advice; with their help we are able to write a more precise draft of the Bylaws for the Association.
Sorry but I didn't find the exact place to put it ;-)
Cheers,
