Central notice adminship[edit]

Hi! For security reasons, the Foundation decided to remove the rights related to Central Notice adminship from regular Meta admins, so that only the special group "central notice administrators" still has them. Since you made CN-related actions in the last 12 months, WMF requested us Meta bureaucrats to add you to do this group, in order not to disturb your workflow. The announcement can be found here. Best regards --MF-W 00:01, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

A bit more about why we can continue the 2FA discussion[edit]

This isn't really relevant to the 2FA discussion in particular, but I think your enwiki background makes you overestimate the decisional power that the WMF has in these areas. Stewards/Meta tends to have a closer relationship with the WMF, and as such if we present them with a carefully considered solution that accounts for their concerns then they won't block it. And if they do, I have some paths that I can use to follow up on that decision.

I suspect it's a two-way street that's causing tension between the WMF and the community on enwiki. On the one hand, the WMF is protective of the flagship project and sometimes takes actions that it feels are "right" without much thought for consulting the community. But on the other, the community is generally pretty toxic, inflexible, and hard to work with through consultations. Outside of that environment, my experience with staff has been that they are very reasonable people who are open to being convinced by both consensus and good arguments. – Ajraddatz (talk) 19:57, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

@Ajraddatz: thanks for reaching out! None of my responses were meant to be a WMF vs project complaint, just accepting that resources are finite. If the constraint is employees of WMF need to be involved with 2FA recovery then the hold back is realistic. The 2FA roll out has been kind of sloppy since it was rushed, but I see it was necessary due to the constant hacks threatening the safety and privacy of users and readers. I notice WMF staff is getting better at dealing with account recovery, but there is a lot of work to do still. 2FA might not scale until something like phab:T180896 can be accomplished (or the rest of phab:T100375 is solved). In the more general, I've found that getting WMF to actually express "their concerns" has been challenging (I've been trying to get a simple reply from WMF T&S for weeks about an email they sent me) - any ideas how to improve this? — xaosflux Talk 20:58, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
That's a fair point re: expressing concerns. It might be because the decisions (with rationales) are made at a higher level, then only the decisions are transmitted to the lower levels for passing on to the community. I'll raise this at the next WMF-steward meeting coming up. As for this specific case, I might be able to find some answers about your inquiry with T&S if you give me more info - email works. – Ajraddatz (talk) 21:13, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
@Ajraddatz: emailed. — xaosflux Talk 00:35, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

Alt Accounts[edit]

Hi, Can you set a golbal java script for a Wikibreak enforcer set to indefinite, for all my alternate (Doppelangger accounts), so no one can use them if they do in an unfortunate event of being hacked. (So if it does get hacked, nothing will happen to them. Thanks. (You can obtain the script here) --Thegooduser (talk) 02:56, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

@Thegooduser: OK done. — xaosflux Talk 03:40, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
Thank you.--Thegooduser (talk) 03:46, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

Help in deletion[edit]

Season Greetings, could you help to delete these 2 nonsense translations, Translations:So you've made a mistake and it's public.../Page display title/bew and Translations:So you've made a mistake and it's public.../36/bew. I tagged as Speedy but didn't appear on CAT:CSD. Thanks!--Cohaf (talk) 16:39, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

@Cohaf: OK these are done. Please note Category:Deleteme is regularly patrolled, tagging is usually all you need to do. — xaosflux Talk 18:01, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. Those didn't appear in the category, but my other taggings (see deleted contributions) today does. Hence, I asked this favour from you. Thanks anyway!--Cohaf (talk) 18:04, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

Update[edit]

[2] This page needs updating. Besides those three ex- power users, there is another one user desysopped by the community decision. Please protect the page and the talkpage, so that only registered users can edit them. This is to prevent the IP-warriors that engage in edit wars and use pejorative language (e.g. f..k on the talkpage). If someone wants to say or do something, he or she must expose his or hers reputation, not to hide behind the anonymity. Thanks, Kubura (talk) 03:28, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

Please post at RFH if it is out of control. — xaosflux Talk 03:38, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

recover & move request[edit]

HI Xaosflux

Back in may this Noongar Birds of South, Western Australia. Ngolak Ngolyenok and Karrak page was deleted would it be possible for it to be recovered move my sandbox ideally in the Incubator for inclusion in https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/nys or alternatively to my sandobx on en.wp so I can review it to possible rescue what was written, it'd also be great if you could identify the user who created it. Thanks Gnangarra (talk) 13:13, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

Yes check.svg Done @Gnangarra: I don't have import access at Incubator, but have imported it with history to: w:en:User:Gnangarra/Noongar Birds of South, Western Australia. Ngolak Ngolyenok and Karrak. If moving to another project, ask an administrator to transwiki import it from there to maintain attribution. Best regards, — xaosflux Talk 13:23, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
Thank very much appreciated Gnangarra (talk) 13:32, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

Mass message sender[edit]

Hi, few months ago you gave me the flag of mass message sender. I used it moderately and I will need it for future initiative in Tuscany.

I am drafting a page for future use (since there is no clear coordination page on itwikipedia or tiwikisoruce) and I have set up all the lists for various projects (also a draft for Liguria). I have no problem to report.

I am not using the flag right now but since the WLM activities will start soon more activities should be made public again during the spring. Many local elections occuring in June force us to prepare WLM activities much before the summertime this year. My 6-months flag is expiring and I therefore need a renewal. What do you suggest to do?--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:36, 7 January 2019 (UTC)

@Alexmar983: I changed your MMS access to indefinite (though it could be removed for inactivity if you don't use it for a lengthy time such as a year in the future). Best regards, — xaosflux Talk 14:44, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
User:Xaosflux thank you again. if I lower my activites, I will suggest someone else for the flag, as already happening for filemover on commons. The WLM team is quite integrated, so no problem.--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:48, 7 January 2019 (UTC)

re the declined CSD[edit]

Hi, it's locally confirmed at zhwiki to be sock of globally locked user User:Allthingsgo, now I'm just waiting for my SRG request to be processed by Stewards. That's why I tagged as such. Regards,--Cohaf (talk) 16:23, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

@Cohaf: ok, feel free to re-csd nominate once done. — xaosflux Talk 16:24, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
I'll. Thanks.--Cohaf (talk) 16:26, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

YGM[edit]

{{YGM}}, etc :-) Best, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 14:31, 15 January 2019 (UTC)

@MarcoAurelio: It will be about 8 hours before I'll be able to read that due to where I am right now, in case this is something urgent. — xaosflux Talk 14:41, 15 January 2019 (UTC)
Not urgent at all. Thanks for the ping. Best regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 14:54, 15 January 2019 (UTC)
@MarcoAurelio: fixed, though I really should refresh these with new algorithms soon. — xaosflux Talk 22:29, 15 January 2019 (UTC)
Thank you. I'll keep an eye to the keyserver then ;-) Regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:18, 16 January 2019 (UTC)

Meta:Requests for oversight/Xaosflux[edit]

I've closed your RfOS, congratulations :). Matiia (talk) 15:42, 27 January 2019 (UTC)

Checking votes[edit]

Hi Xaosflux. The checking of stew votes is done elsewhere, not manually on each voting page. Re: here. Trijnsteltalk 14:18, 8 February 2019 (UTC)

And more information is here. Trijnsteltalk 14:20, 8 February 2019 (UTC)
@Trijnstel: thanks for the note, will wait for the bot jobs to come around. — xaosflux Talk 15:12, 8 February 2019 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: Thank you. I've asked Alchimista if his bot is up and running. Trijnsteltalk 15:13, 8 February 2019 (UTC)

Suppression[edit]

There was a suppression at Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat today. I don't know who did it, however, it is the same size edit as the user page that I deleted of that user. Would you be able to check with your fellow oversighters, and see if the same action is required.  — billinghurst sDrewth 04:38, 22 February 2019 (UTC)

  • tps@Billinghurst:If I'm not wrong it's Bsadowski1 did the suppression. I saw the contents and is just contracts?--Cohaf (talk) 04:45, 22 February 2019 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: thank you for the note, without speculating on the motivation of the post, it does appear to fall under criteria #1 and has also been suppressed now. — xaosflux Talk 13:01, 22 February 2019 (UTC)

User:Hiàn (mobile)/global.js and related page[edit]

Hi Xaosflux. I was wondering if you could disable the redirects in User:Hiàn (mobile)/global.js and User:Hiàn (mobile)/common.js - I'd like to keep these separate pages (and in hindsight I probably should not have added those). Thanks, Hiàn (talk) 01:10, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

@Hiàn and Hiàn (mobile): I've blanked those out for you. — xaosflux Talk 01:14, 1 March 2019 (UTC)
Much appreciated. Hiàn (talk) 01:15, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

User talk:86.141.93.162[edit]

Did you read the abuselog for that contributor? Think that it may just be our regular vandal.  — billinghurst sDrewth 20:32, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

@Billinghurst: no, I only deactivated the unblock request, as the block had expired we didn't need it in the admin backlog. — xaosflux Talk 20:34, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
I was more intimating the commentary, not the action. But not to worry.  — billinghurst sDrewth 20:39, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

2FA manual audits[edit]

Hi Xaosflux. Would you expand on my edit here? Specifically, I'd like to replace the final diff with a link directly to wherever you gleamed that knowledge. While I am sure word has gotten around most users with those rights, I'd still like to get the documentation into good order. Thanks, AGK ■ 21:45, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

  • @AGK: I think you are referring to the "audit" part? If so they didn't post on-wiki I'm aware of (but it may be in phab tickets). An excerpt of the official email notification (at the time specific to interface-admins and central-notice admins) included: In the future we intend to enforce this as a technical requirement for admin access. Until that control can be enforced technically we will be mandating it administratively for all community and staff accounts. This means if you do not enable 2FA by 24th November 2018 your admin privileges will be revoked. Removal of access for Wikimedia Foundation staff members who do not regularly require these rights has already begun. The "it administratively" part is the "manual" part. Likely for security reasons, a schedule has not been posted. There is a request to allow certain users to audit this open in phab:T209749. Does that help? — xaosflux Talk 22:45, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

Request for adminship on test2 wiki[edit]

Flagged Revisions is going to be enabled on zhwiki (phab:T221933). I want to develop a gadget related to this feature before deployment. I need admin right to test it. FR is not enabled on test, so I request this right on test2. Thanks! --Xiplus (talk) 07:15, 25 May 2019 (UTC)

Yes check.svg Done I've added it for a year there, best regards. — xaosflux Talk 13:52, 25 May 2019 (UTC)

User:Xaosflux/globalwatchlist.js[edit]

I came across User:Xaosflux/globalwatchlist.js - it looks like you forked so that you could set your own site list. If that is the case, you may want to take a look at the current version of my script - as of version 1.4, users could set their own list of sites, and there are now a lot of other features. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 09:06, 8 August 2019 (UTC)

@DannyS712: thanks for the note, I was testing it out, but I'm not using it now - will refresh if I try it again! — xaosflux Talk 11:20, 8 August 2019 (UTC)

Requesting patroller rights[edit]

Hi Xaosflux. Would you be willing to grant me patroller rights? I'd like to be able to use rollback here on meta, and if I come across unpatrolled pages I can help out. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 21:06, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

@DannyS712: seems fine. Please look over Help:Reverting#Rollback and keep in mind that using rollback on meta-wiki for anything that isn't very obvious vandalism can be taken the wrong way, we get editors from every project and language here and actions can be taken the wrong way sometimes and can be hard to explain if there is a language barrier. For blatant vandalism, you don't need to worry about hurting the vandal's feelings though! As far as "patrol" - it pretty much safe to patrol anything that isn't blatant vandalism or something obviously worse like a personal attack; we don't have worries of patrolling vs indexing flags like the content projects do. — xaosflux Talk 23:08, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
Thanks. --DannyS712 (talk) 00:03, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

EC[edit]

Sorry for the ec/if I stepped on toes! Saw you'd posted and removed the other rights but not posted the meta request, so I went ahead and posted it :) TonyBallioni (talk) 00:53, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

No worries, it all has the same affect! — xaosflux Talk 00:56, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
