Help with traslation[edit]

Hi Xaosflux! Ysogo and me have prepared the page Wikipassaporto/it in Italian. We would like to translate this page in other languages with the help of some students (starting from English, French, German, Chinese and Spanish), so we need to activate the translation tool for this page. We also have Wikipassaporto/en, but it's just a stub, so it can be deleted if necessary. Could you help us? Thanks! --Yiyi (talk) 11:00, 22 December 2017 (UTC)

@Yiyi: I can't delete pages, if you made the page and want to delete it just put {{speedy|reason}} on it and a patrolling admin will get it. As far as your page to translate, it doesn't quite look ready. See Meta:Translate extension, and mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page_translation_example. Notably, you have the entire page, including table code etc all as one huge translation block. Are you really sure you want it like that? — xaosflux Talk 14:23, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
I just marked the pure single sentences with "translation" tags. The rest of table is no longer in translation tags. I believe, it is now ready for translation activation.--Ysogo (talk) 22:49, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
@Yiyi: and @Ysogo: Wikipassaporto/it is marked now. — xaosflux Talk 00:20, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
Thanks! But there is a problem: the source language is Italian, but at the top of the page there is the English label. So, if I try to translate in English, there is the message "English is the source language of this page". Is it possible to set Italian as source language? --Yiyi (talk) 14:24, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
User:Nemo_bis I've looked through phab:T37489, and saw some comments from you, is our documentation missing something that will allow for non-English translation sources on meta: ? — xaosflux Talk 16:54, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
While waiting for phab:T37489, Yiyi and I have thought how to work around. One additional question we have before starting, is whether moving a page to a new title preserve the "translation stuff"? Thank you for answering.--Ysogo (talk) 08:37, 24 December 2017 (UTC)
It should, you can move a page. — xaosflux Talk 12:32, 24 December 2017 (UTC)
I just tried but I can't. Once a page is marked for translation, moving right is restricted and only translation-admin can move it. Can you please move Wikipassaporto/it to Wikipassaporto? Thank you.--Ysogo (talk) 18:46, 25 December 2017 (UTC)
I requested a deletion of the the /en page that is blocking it. Pending update. — xaosflux Talk 18:52, 25 December 2017 (UTC)
Deleted. Regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 10:34, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
OK, Please see User:Xaosflux/Sandbox4 for what will be moved and to where - please confirm this is what you want. — xaosflux Talk 13:45, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
Yes, the list is correct. Thank you.--Ysogo (talk) 18:33, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
@Ysogo: ok see Wikipassaporto. — xaosflux Talk 22:52, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
Thank you. It's how we wished. Now it's up to us to make it nice. --Ysogo (talk) 23:14, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
Hi Xaosflux. Sorry to bother you again, but there's something I feel I'm not catching.
After you completed the moving, I started the work for translation. Actually I did three things:
  1. I cretaed and published the italian version of the text.
  2. I made a change to the source page to drop the "homemade" box for switching between languages (that is a part not in "translate" tags).
  3. I started "replacing" in the source page the italian text with english text. (i.e. the text between translate tags).
About the three points, my expectations were:
  1. The link italiano to appear in the "official" box for switching between languages. --> It worked as expected.
  2. The change to be effective for all language versions (which means italian and spanish so far). --> It didn't happen.
  3. To see translation statics drop and new text to be proposed for update both in italian and spanish versions. --> It didn't happen.
I have noticed the text This page contains changes which are not marked for translation.
According to mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page_translation_example#Step 4: Making changes, I'm supposed (step 11) to Click the "marked for translation" link at the top. I can't find such link.
What I misunderstood and what I'm doing wrong? Thank you in advance.--Ysogo (talk) 06:40, 27 December 2017 (UTC)
I remarked Wikipassaporto for translation. Bottom line right now, all "source" pages on metawiki are assumed to be the English version, as that is the site language. (See that phab ticket above) for requests for have multi-langugage sources. Is there anything you want me to do now? — xaosflux Talk 14:48, 27 December 2017 (UTC)
Thank for remarking. I still don't understand how I can do it on my own. Where is the "marked for translation link" that is mentioned in the help page? It's restricted to admin only? Thank you.--Ysogo (talk) 15:09, 27 December 2017 (UTC)
It is restricted to admins and translation admins. As you see above, pages can quickly get messy with the translation extension. In the general use case an "official" page is made in the source language and edited until it is fairly mature, then translated copies are made. If the source page were to be vandalized etc, you would not want to have every single translation copy be invalidated pending new translations. — xaosflux Talk 15:14, 27 December 2017 (UTC)
Well, honestly my personal opinion is that deleting, moving pages is certainly a delicate task, and it makes sense to be restricted, but marking for translation is something that can be available for at least auto-verified user. You don't expect vandalism from auto-verified. Anyway, if this is the rule on Meta, let's live with it. Thank you for your support.--Ysogo (talk) 15:23, 27 December 2017 (UTC)
@Ysogo: you may apply for translation permissions here: Meta:Requests_for_adminship#Requests_for_translation_adminship, your global contributions show a long history so you will probably get it if you ask for it. — xaosflux Talk 15:26, 27 December 2017 (UTC)
Just done. Bye.--Ysogo (talk) 16:24, 27 December 2017 (UTC)

Hello Xaosflux. Can I ask your help again. Can you please mark for translation the current version of wikipassaporto. Text now is only english and this set the baseline for the on-going translations. Thank you.--Ysogo (talk) 13:07, 29 December 2017 (UTC)

Ysogo, this is done. — xaosflux Talk 13:50, 29 December 2017 (UTC)

Congratulations, Xaosflux! You now have the rights of an administrator on Meta-Wiki. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests for deletion, but also Talk:Spam blacklist and Talk:Interwiki map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-adminconnect. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading although it doesn't always completely apply here at Meta. Please also check or add your entry to Meta:Administrators#List of administrators and the Template:List of administrators. You're also allowed to subscribe the metawiki admins private mailing list. Again, congratulations and welcome to the team. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 10:45, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

Abuse filter[edit]

I wanted to leave a comment here, but I was prevented by the abuse filter. Can you see what's up with that? The message has to be in the logs somewhere; if not, here's a copy. -- 12:37, 12 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi 89.111, I don't have time to debug that right now, but I placed the copy of your message on to the page for you. — xaosflux Talk 13:07, 12 February 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. Looking at it now, I think the message might have been caught by the filter because I used the f-word. -- 13:12, 12 February 2018 (UTC)
Yup that was it, it is primarily for antivandalism reasons and applies to brand new and unregistered accounts, you can bypass that filter by creating an account or logging in. — xaosflux Talk 13:54, 12 February 2018 (UTC)
While we're on this topic, could you please stop the edit warring here? The user keeps reverting to an inaccurate version that shows that certain users no longer have their rights, which is not the case. Stewards have refused to remove them repeateadly (here, here and here, for instance). -- 17:09, 14 February 2018 (UTC)
I've pinged steward User:MF-Warburg to take a look at this as they last closed the SRP as not done. — xaosflux Talk 17:58, 14 February 2018 (UTC)
Yes check.svg Done added short-term protection and noted on that page's talk. — xaosflux Talk 18:00, 14 February 2018 (UTC)
The editor is back at it again. They hasn't addressed any concerns brought up on the talk page (mainly the fact that they keep changing the list with inaccurate information) and they keep trying to use force to get what they want. Until there's a response from Vituzzu, I suggest a permanent protection of that page. -- 12:11, 3 March 2018 (UTC)
Hi 89.111 I suggest you start a section at Stewards' noticeboard. — xaosflux Talk 12:33, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

Please, restore[edit]

[1] Please, restore to this version [2]. That IP is vandalising and hiding behind anonimity.
Croatian editors' community has decided. Kubura (talk) 16:48, 17 February 2018 (UTC)

X mark.svg Not done This is certainly still in dispute, I've asked the closing steward, Vituzzu, to comment on that talk page. — xaosflux Talk 19:04, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
I do not intend to engage in some childish editwar, especially against some IP that cowardishly hides behind anonimous IP. Unlike him, I'm exposing my userreputation by editing under my username. Anyway, there is no dispute there: community explicitly decided (almost unanimously), stewards do not decide - they execute (they are obliged to - Stewards_policy#Don't_override_consensus) the will of the community since they (stewards) have the software tools to do so in this case (they are the only ones with those tools). All the remarks in that case were taken into consideration and everything was done to fulfill them (even the voting extended to more than a month; every process on Wikipedias is a week long, neither the election of stewards is not that long), to avoid any further complaints. Since stewards two times in a row haven't executed what they were obliged to, it's now on them to talk to the concerned community on their Village pump, not on a distant project like Meta. This is serious thing, they cannot do that with a comment in a summary or two words ("not done"). Kubura (talk) 20:48, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
Please follow up with User:Vituzzu who closed the requests. — xaosflux Talk 21:55, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

Local group for abusefilter editors[edit]

So, seeing how the Babel thread went, I think we can put forward the idea of creating a local 'abusefilter' group to view and edit the Meta-Wiki filters, included the global ones? What do you think? Or do we need two local groups, one for the local filters and another one for the global ones? Regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 12:37, 18 February 2018 (UTC)

@MarcoAurelio: How about just letting admins modify them? Like I said on the page, it would be in-line with their existing access to the spam and title blacklists. I'd prefer to not make a new group for each new front-end interface we get. – Ajraddatz (talk) 23:49, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
Any is fine with me, and we already have a "policy" based control if someone ONLY wants to deal with filter they could apply for limited adminship. — xaosflux Talk 00:11, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
Ajraddatz Okay. If the people want to take that path I'm fine as well, provided that admins don't mess around with filters without knowing what they're doing. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 20:50, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
Hi @Ajraddatz: - so do we need to make a "global" RfC, a "meta" RfC, just get the Babel discussion closed? — xaosflux Talk 21:58, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

Can you delete this and this. The user Abd was recently globally banned by the WMF for harassment, as part of that he was creating LTA "studies" filled with misinformation on another user. Those separate articles were taken down, but he has two "user-data" links still up that still links to the edits (although you blanked one of them); someone else recently blanked another complaining, but they should be completely deleted. Abd deceptively is linking to these links on his blog and since there are still edits on that page if you view the history - it comes up on a google search and is abusing searches of the user Abd was harassing. Is there any chance these here and this link can be deleted completely?Largewarhammer (talk) 16:28, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

Interaction Timeline V1.1[edit]

Hello Xaosflux, I’m following up with you because you previously showed an interest in the Interaction Timeline. The Anti-Harassment Tools team has completed V1.1 and the tool is ready for use. The Interaction Timeline shows a chronologic history for two users on pages where they have both made edits.

The purpose of the tool is to better understand the sequence of edits between two users in order to make a decision about the best way to resolve a user conduct dispute. Here are some test cases that show the results and also some known limitations of the tool. We would like to hear your experience using the tool in real cases. You can leave public feedback on talk page or contact us by email if the case needs discretion or you would prefer to comment privately. You cited the criterion G3 from Meta:Deletion policy. How can you identify Reisalice (talk · contribs · logs · User rights · Number of edits: · Global account information · Email this user) with one of banned users? The account was active on Meta-wiki only, you have not a check-user privilege here, and I never heard of a LTA looking like Reisalice behaviourally, let alone banned persons. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 09:46, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

I agree with this request. I don't see a community process to ban this user, and making a request by the user to address such lack of due process is not unreasonable.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:32, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
And please point me to the meta policy that you are using to implement this block.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:40, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

This user has had a user page at meta for nearly six years. They make a couple of edits not liked, and you have blocked the user without a discussion with them. Is this how you would like to be handled somewhere? I do find such an approach heavy-handed. I do not agree with that person's PoV, but so what? It was not promotional in the sense of a product, it was a political statement.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:57, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

Next steps for the wish “confirmation prompt for the rollback link”[edit]

Logo Feedback round in the Technical Wishes project.png

Hello, a while ago you participated in a feedback round about a proposal how accidental clicks on the rollback link could be avoided. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and ideas!
Looking at the feedback and the rollback situation in different wikis, the development team decided how to approach this wish: As a default, most wikis won’t have a confirmation. But users who wish to have one, can enable it in their preferences, which will add a confirmation prompt to the rollback link on the diff page and on the list pages. The prompt won’t be a pop-up, but an inline prompt like for the thanks confirmation. You can read more about the planned solution and what influenced this decision on the project page. -- Best, Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 09:41, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
