- I have gone ahead and made this change. However, I should note that anyone can register an account on TranslateWiki.net via the form on the homepage, and make such changes on their own. :) --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 02:21, 28 September 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for your edits to Text of the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License.
I wonder if we can maybe bot (as in copy-paste, not machine translate) the translations especially for the legal code at the top. The legal code is at creativecommons:by-sa/4.0/legalcode and it is already translated into dozens of languages by the CC team. Also can we maybe get this linked in the Meta-Wiki site footer? Aasim 23:35, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- My understanding is that we need to link to the official Creative Commons license in the footer. But ultimately that would be up to the Foundation's Legal team. Previously, this was usually done on Wikisource - just curious if there's a reason folks selected Meta-Wiki this time. As far as a bot - I am honestly not sure as the bots I work on are basically exclusively working on the wikis and not pulling in from an outside source. --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 23:39, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- Interesting. Because the English Wikipedia links to their own copy hosted on-wiki. This would be better as it is an on-wiki page that can be linked from multiple wikis. Aasim 19:26, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- Fair point - do you know if anyone has already run this past Legal? If not, I can ping some folks. --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 20:28, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Awesome Aasim: After speaking with @SSpalding (WMF) in Legal about this, I think you have some good points and I am willing to work with you on setting up the page for translation and updating footer links when we have enough language setup. However, I did want to run a sort of addendum to the plan past you. I am good either way - but can see some advantages worth considering to setting this content up on Foundation Governance Wiki vs. Meta-Wiki. Primarily that it allows us to greater ability to reduce risk of vandalism on the English-version by reducing number of editors to Foundation staff and functionaries as well as being consistent with other disclaimers and policies linked from footers. The translations and talk pages will still be editable by registered accounts, so this is primarily about the English/"source" version of the text. Given the content is ultimately "Creative Commons" and not "Wikimedia Foundation" or "Wikimedia communities" - there are no "official" guidelines/precedents to follow - and I could see pros/cons either way - so wanted to run it past you for input before taking things further. Let me know what you think. --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 05:05, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Even better! Although Wikinews will need to stay as is because Wikinews uses CC BY 2.5 license rather than CC BY-SA 4.0.
- The translations are already on the Creative Commons, we just need a way to fetch them. Aasim 16:31, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah - fetching them without manual copy/pasting - not 100% sure about. But we can at least start with getting it setup for translation on Governance Wiki and go from there. I will work on getting that setup. --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 18:30, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Awesome Aasim: Okay - I have setup the page for translation on Foundation Governance Wiki. As far as importing outside text, probably the best idea is to create a Phabricator ticket and see if any engineers or volunteers have ideas. Otherwise, I suspect as often happens, time will result in a number of the key languages being translated. My hunch is that ultimately, copying and pasting will wind up being the fasted given time likely required to make everything automated work JUST right without human review. Factoring in coding time and eventual human review and amount of text, can see argument for copy/paste. The other factor is I am not 100% sure what the actual quality of translations on CC's website is. I assume they are high, but it is entirely possible our translators will feel differently and prefer to do manual translation. Folks on the translators mailing list may have other ideas/feedback. --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 19:22, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. And I see your point - Creative Commons probably has high quality translators but still the English version takes precedence. Maybe eventually we can get all of the CC BY-SA 4.0 links everywhere (except on Wikinews) to point to the Foundation page when it happens.
- I opened a Phabricator ticket as well: phab:T380412. Please add appropriate tasks and whatnot. Aasim 20:00, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- I will keep an eye on the page and the task. Feel free to ping me if you think we have reached a point where there are enough languages available such that we can reasonably consider updating the footer links. Assuming Legal is okay with that and there are no clear community concerns, I can help support making the actual code changes necessary to make that happen. --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 20:13, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
