From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Collaborate - Innovate - Excel

Wikidata, a collaborative knowledge base, has emerged as a valuable platform for storing and sharing structured data across various domains. In the context of Nigerian resources, the Nigeria Library Association's (NLA) Bayelsa State Chapter in collaboration with the Digital Library/Librarians Forum recognizes the potential of Wikidata to revolutionize access to scholarly articles and enhance the dissemination of knowledge.

The Nigeria Library Association Bayelsa State Chapter, a group dedicated to promoting library and information services in Bayelsa State, has embarked on an initiative to leverage Wikidata for integrating scholarly articles. This innovative approach seeks to harness the power of open data and collaborative editing to enhance the discoverability and accessibility of valuable research resources from Nigeria. The Nigeria Library Association Bayelsa State Chapter's endeavor to incorporate scholarly articles on Wikidata showcases the immense potential of open data and collaborative platforms in advancing access to Nigerian resources. By embracing this initiative, the academic community can contribute to a global pool of knowledge while preserving and promoting Nigeria's rich scholarly heritage.

This project will be held during the 2023 NLA, Bayelsa State Chapter Conference, themed, Scholarly Communication and Global Visibility: The Dynamics of Technology Application

Benefits of Incorporating Nigerian Scholarly Articles on Wikidata[edit]

  • Centralized data repository: Wikidata serves as a centralized repository for structured information about scholarly articles from diverse disciplines. By collating data on authors, publication date, and other metadata, it creates a comprehensive knowledge platform that facilitates efficient search and retrieval of relevant resources.
  • Enhanced visibility: By incorporating scholarly articles on Wikidata, these works become part of a global knowledge network. Increased visibility can attract a broader audience, including researchers, policymakers, and the general public, thereby fostering greater engagement with Nigerian research outputs.
  • Skill acquisition: Librarians will acquire and improve their technical skills with a better understanding on the need to contribute to Wikidata as an open access platform.
  • Open access: Wikidata operates under Creative Commons CC0 License and Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License, enabling contributors to release their scholarly articles to the public domain. This open access approach promotes the free sharing of knowledge and aligns with the principles of academic inclusivity and collaboration.
  • Interconnectedness/linked data : Wikidata's unique feature of linked data allows for seamless integration of information across various datasets. Nigerian scholarly articles on Wikidata can be connected to related topics, authors, institutions, and even global research trends, enriching the contextual understanding of these works
  • Integration with other platforms: Wikidata's structured data can be easily integrated into other platforms and vice versa, enriching academic databases, research portals, and other information systems, thus further increasing the visibility of Nigerian resources.

Project Drive[edit]

  1. Enhance accessibility of Nigerian scholarly articles: By incorporating scholarly articles on Wikidata, the project seeks to improve the accessibility of valuable research resources from Nigeria. The centralization of information on Wikidata and its multilingual support make scholarly articles more discoverable and accessible to a global audience

By involving the Nigeria Library Association Bayelsa State Chapter and the academic community, the project aims to foster a sense of collaboration and community engagement in preserving and disseminating Nigerian scholarly heritage
  3. Empower Nigerian librarians/researchers: By showcasing Nigerian scholarly articles on an internationally recognized platform like Wikidata, the project empowers Nigerian researchers and promotes their work on a global stage. This increased visibility can lead to more collaboration opportunities and recognition within the academic community.
