Project information[edit]

What is the main goal of your project?
  • More Clearly Put Wikipedia on the Map of Georgia Scholars, in Literature and Beyond
  • With a big & well-advertised edit-a-thon, this initiative aims to work with the staff at the Georgian Literature Museum to enhance Wikipedia articles about Georgia's most notable literary figures. By drawing on the deep wealth of resources available at the Georgian Literature Museum, this project will use primary sources to add unique information to Wikipedia entries about key literary movements in the 20th Century such as the Order of the Blue Horns, a cohort of Georgian symbolists, and H2SO4, the Georgian Futurist movement. While these movements mirror wider European literary developments, they have been overlooked and undervalued as distinct examples of the impact of literary movements in smaller, peripheral European countries. This initiative offers a unique opportunity to take advantage of the multilingual makeup of the group to add and translate new information on this topic in three languages: Georgian, English, and German. The ultimate goal of this project is to use Wikipedia tools to foster a deeper knowledge and appreciation of Georgia's rich literary tradition within the broader context of world literature, and to involve major literature figures in Wikipedia more than they have been so far.
Describe which activities you plan to implement
  1. Research and documentation. Our team will identify topics and primary sources in the archives of the Georgian literature museum.
  2. Wikimedia workshop: a half day training session will be held with participants to familiarize them with Wikipedia editing tools and best practices.
  3. Edit-a-thon for two full days: participants will meet together to improve specific Wikipedia articles related to Georgia's literary figures and movements based on the Georgian Literature Musuem's archives.
  4. Outreach and engagement: this project will take advantage of the wide reach of the organizational affiliations of the participants to promote Wikipedia and the new articles, and promote those on social media.
Describe your team
  • All volunteers:
    • Dr. Lasha Bakradze - Literature Museum director
    • Dr. Hans Gutbrod - Professor, Ilia State University
    • Ryan Sherman - Lecturer, Project Manager, PhD Student, Ilia State University.

For which Wikimedia projects is the project relevant? For which communities is the project relevant? What is your target group?
  • Georgia
Do you have any metrics for the proposed grant proposal? If yes, please fill in the number of participants, editors, organisers and content contributions (Wikipedia articles, Wikimedia Commons images, Wikidata items, etc.)
  • we want to reach roughly 15 people for edit-a-thon, of two full days, and see how far we get -- a bit hard to predict how many articles this will yield. We really do not have so much experience -- but have great partners and are very motivated.
  • As so much of Georgia in on Facebook, we aim to reach many people that way also, with posts. Lasha Bakradze has a following of many thousands of people.

Any additional comments or remarks about your project
  • while a well-established format, we think that this GLAM partner would attract lots of attention, and we would be very excited to hold it. (Alas, our GLAM partner has none of their own funds, but will provide facilities.)
