Office action request for block on English Wikipedia

@WMFOffice: I got blocked for a nonsense reason on English Wikipedia and then my talk page access got revoked with no explanation and I can't use the Unblock Ticket Request System because it's allegedly getting spammed with requests, so please use an office action to unblock me. B4531826 (talk) 05:27, 1 January 2023 (UTC)

????????LMAO! Office action could not be used in such a way, and office action is used for lock, ban etc...@B4531826 wanna get yourself banned? Lemonaka (talk) 11:33, 1 January 2023 (UTC)
@Lemonaka: Why can't an office action be used that way? B4531826 (talk) 16:05, 1 January 2023 (UTC)
Please read Office actions Lemonaka (talk) 16:37, 1 January 2023 (UTC)
The correct venue to appeal is UTRS. GZWDer (talk) 20:08, 1 January 2023 (UTC)
@GZWDer: Not done, nonsense request: as stated above, the Unblock Ticket Request System can't be used. B4531826 (talk) 21:13, 1 January 2023 (UTC)
You may also e-mail the blocking admin, in this case Special:EmailUser/Yamla.--GZWDer (talk) 21:27, 1 January 2023 (UTC)
Yamla created a hoax to block me (see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MobileDiff/1130764256 for proof), so I don't think emailing him will do anything. B4531826 (talk) 22:27, 1 January 2023 (UTC)

This is not a general complaints forum, its purpose is well-described. This forum cannot resolve block issues at other wikis, that is solely within the control of that self-governing wiki. Please use their described unblock, complaints and issue resolution processes.

Where to edit and publish the fundraising campaign message

Hello. Where is it possible to update the fundraising campaign message? The current one in Slovenian Wikipedia is quite badly written and outdated.[1] I have improved it here but it does not seem to be quite the same message. Should I request that on Phabricator? --TadejM my talk 21:53, 19 January 2023 (UTC)

@TadejM these are updated on-wiki on that project; looks like mostly by Tomasz Gorski on the fundraising team. Try his email. @HNordeen (WMF): may also have information on this. — xaosflux Talk 12:06, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
Hi @TadejM! Thank you for your concern and offering to help improve the message. You're correct @Xaosflux, Tomasz is able to help coordinate corrections. Please email him at tgorski@wikimedia.org - HNordeen (WMF) (talk) 17:24, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

The Unblock Ticket Request System is broken

The Unblock Ticket Request System claims that it's being spammed with requests but this incorrect as I've not been able to send any requests and no one else is on my IP address . B4531826 (talk) 17:17, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

If you think there is a bug with the UTRS system you can report it here. — xaosflux Talk 17:55, 5 January 2023 (UTC)

Upcoming vote on the revised Enforcement Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct

You can find this message translated into additional languages.
More languagesPlease help translate to your language

Hello all,

In mid-January 2023, the Enforcement Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct will undergo a second community-wide ratification vote. This follows the March 2022 vote, which resulted in a majority of voters supporting the Enforcement Guidelines. During the vote, participants helped highlight important community concerns. The Board’s Community Affairs Committee requested that these areas of concern be reviewed.

The volunteer-led Revisions Committee worked hard reviewing community input and making changes. They updated areas of concern, such as training and affirmation requirements, privacy and transparency in the process, and readability and translatability of the document itself.

The revised Enforcement Guidelines can be viewed here, and a comparison of changes can be found here.

How to vote?

Beginning January 17, 2023, voting will be open. This page on Meta-wiki outlines information on how to vote using SecurePoll.

Who can vote?

The eligibility requirements for this vote are the same as for the Wikimedia Board of Trustees elections. See the voter information page for more details about voter eligibility. If you are an eligible voter, you can use your Wikimedia account to access the voting server.

What happens after the vote?

Votes will be scrutinized by an independent group of volunteers, and the results will be published on Wikimedia-l, the Movement Strategy Forum, Diff and on Meta-wiki. Voters will again be able to vote and share concerns they have about the guidelines. The Board of Trustees will look at the levels of support and concerns raised as they look at how the Enforcement Guidelines should be ratified or developed further.

Help with old dumps

Hi! I have been working a research project that involves me downloading the latest dump every month from several projects — enwiktionary, eswiktionary, frwiktionary, dewiktionary, enwikiquote, eswikiquote, frwikiquote, dewikiquote, enwikibooks, eswikibooks, frwikibooks, and dewikibooks. I have been working on this for about two years, but I have been busy for a few months and didn’t have the time to download them immediately, but I thought that I could just download them later.

Today, I was finally ready to download them, when I noticed that the dumps from June and July are missing. I have looked all around the internet, but I have not found a solution.

Can any of you help? The last available username (talk) 19:42, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

@The last available username try archive.org? For example https://web.archive.org/web/20220801023527/https://dumps.wikimedia.org/enwiktionary/20220720/ ? — xaosflux Talk 12:16, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
@Xaosflux Thanks very much! This helps me a lot and is even on the day I was looking for, but this unfortunately doesn't work for the other projects. The last available username (talk) 15:52, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
@The last available username try the mirror at your.org, just change the name in the url, example: https://dumps.wikimedia.your.org/frwikibooksxaosflux Talk 16:11, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
@Xaosflux Thanks so much!!! You saved me! How do you find that and what is your.org? The last available username (talk) 16:15, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
@The last available username there is a list of some known mirrors at Mirroring Wikimedia project XML dumps. — xaosflux Talk 16:58, 21 January 2023 (UTC)

talk:Deletionism and other related talk pages

Most of the discussion on these talk pages seem to just be FORUMy comments and complaints and nothing about improving the page (besides people who think they're on Wikipedia). Virtually nothing productive has happened on these talk pages, and I don't see much maintenance or moderation on these pages. Should we do something about the junk on these talk pages? 137a (talk) 15:23, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

Suspicious user contributing to several small wikis

春去無蹤 ( local | logs | global )

this user contributed large volumes of texts to a large number of pages in Zhuang languages, Uyghur language, Tibetic language, Hakka language, Eastern Min, Gan language...

frankly, i dont think a person fluent in all these distant languages exist, so this looks like Scots_Wikipedia#Controversy.

also, i cant find a page for reporting this kind of suspicious activity. RZuo (talk) 09:59, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

Chatbots have hit critical mass and are creating copyright issues

No longer just for conversation...

Chatbots can now write content amazingly well, in a striking variety of formats and styles, following even complex instructions from users...

...but who owns the copyrights to what they write?

And can the generated content legally be placed under open license by users?

ChatGPT has gone viral, is taking the Web by storm, and is dominating tech news. What ChatGPT can do is mind blowing. The output from chatbots like ChatGPT have already started showing up on English Wikipedia. See w:Talk:Artwork title#Use of ChatGPT and w:Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#More detected AI-generated papers.

The English Wikipedia is currently in a vigorous debate on what to do about chatbots (also known as large language models, or LLMs) including a lengthy debate about copyrights at w:Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#Copyright status. There is also a policy draft being developed called w:Wikipedia:Large language models, with copyrights being discussed on its talk page.

As chatbot use is spreading like wildfire, and their output will be showing up on a wide range of Wikimedia projects, this is something you should become familiar with. The Transhumanist (talk) 12:21, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

P.S.: Chatbots can also be used for vandalism, hoaxes, pushing POVs, and generating misinformation on a scale hitherto undreamt of. And they have the bizarre tendency to make things up, including source references. We are going to need automated identification tools, and fast. The Transhumanist (talk) 12:32, 30 January 2023 (UTC)
