Wikimedia Foundation Community Affairs Committee/Task Force Schwesterprojekte
Die Task Force Schwesterprojekte (engl. Sister Projects Task Force, SiPTaF) ist dem Ausschuss für Community-Angelegenheiten des Kuratoriums der Wikimedia Foundation unterstellt. Die Task Force ist eine Gruppe von Community-Mitgliedern und Foundation-Kurator/innen, die gemeinsam eine Strategie zur Unterstützung des Lebenszyklus von Nicht-Wikipedia-Projekten innerhalb des Movements entwickeln.
In der Satzung des Ausschusses für Community-Angelegenheiten heißt es, dass eine der Aufgaben des Ausschusses darin besteht, "die bestehenden Schwesterprojekte und die Anträge für neue Schwester-Websites zu überprüfen und ein formalisiertes Verfahren von der Antragstellung bis zur Genehmigung/Ablehnung zu schaffen". Die Task Force Schwesterprojekte setzt sich für diese Aufgabe ein, indem sie klare Prozesse und Kriterien rund um Schwesterprojekte und deren Entwicklung entwickelt.
Task Force Schwesterprojekte sucht freiwillige beratende Mitglieder
SiPTaF sucht 3-6 freiwillige beratende Mitglieder, die verschiedene Projekte und Communities repräsentieren und in der Task Force mitarbeiten möchten.
Wie man sich bewirbt
Um deine Kandidatur einzureichen, beginne bitte einen neuen Abschnitt auf dieser Diskussionsseite, der Folgendes enthält:
- die 3 wichtigsten Gründe, warum du dem Projekt gerne beitreten würdest.
- deine Erfahrungen mit Schwesterprojekten (Richtlinienänderungen, als Administrator/in oder eine andere Art von Autor/in mit erweiterten Rechten (Funktionär/in) dort usw.).
- die Sprachen, die du fließend sprichst (Englisch ist die Arbeitssprache der Task Force).
- deine Erfahrungen im Projektmanagement und/oder in der Evaluierung, falls du welche hast.
- deine Erfahrung bei der Einführung eines neuen Schwesterprojekts (erfolgreich oder nicht).
Der Ausschuss für Community-Angelegenheiten ist an einer möglichst vielfältigen Gruppe interessiert, möchte aber ein Gleichgewicht zwischen der Transparenz und der Sicherheit unserer Kandidat/innen finden. Bitte beachte: Du musst deinen echten Namen für diese Arbeit nicht öffentlich bekannt geben. Solltest du jedoch ausgewählt werden, musst du eine Kopie eines Ausweises privat an die Wikimedia Foundation schicken. Außerdem wirst du möglicherweise aufgefordert, eine standardmäßige Geheimhaltungsvereinbarung (NDA) zu unterzeichnen, wenn du für deine Arbeit mit sensiblen Informationen umgehen musst.
Auswahlkriterien
Die folgenden Kriterien sind flexibel; du musst nicht jeden Punkt erfüllen, um ein erfolgreicher Bewerber zu sein.
- Mindestens 1 Jahr Erfahrung als Funktionär/in (Benutzer/in mit erweiterten Rechten, z.B. Administrator/in) in einem Schwesterprojekt (wenn du derzeit eine/r bist, wäre das ein Bonus) und/oder mindestens 1 Jahr Erfahrung im Projektmanagement und/oder in der Evaluation.
- Allgemeines Verständnis des Wikimedia Movements, der Wikimedia-Projekte und der Strategieempfehlungen des Wikimedia Movements 2030.
- Nachgewiesene Erfahrung im Wikimedia Movement außerhalb der eigenen Wikimedia-Community oder des eigenen Projekts ist von Vorteil.
- Erforderlich: gute Englischkenntnisse, da dies die Geschäftssprache des Vorstands und seiner Ausschüsse ist.
Zeit / Arbeitsaufwand
Berater/innen müssen schätzungsweise 2-3 Stunden pro Woche aufwenden, um an den monatlichen und anderen Ad-hoc-Online-Sitzungen teilzunehmen, die erforderlichen Materialien vorzubereiten oder zu prüfen und je nach Bedarf mit der Taskforce, den Mitarbeitenden und/oder dem Vorstandsausschuss zu kommunizieren. Die Berater/innen müssen sich nicht nur mit der Genehmigung oder dem Abschluss von Wikimedia-Projekten befassen, sondern auch mit der Frage, ob ein Schwesterprojekt erfolgreich ist.
Zeitlinie der Aktion
- Die Kandidat/innen reichen ihr Interesse und die oben genannten Informationen bis spätestens 15. Mai 2023 ein.
- SiPTaF wird die besten Kandidat/innen bis zum 30. Mai 2023 interviewen.
- SiPTaF wählt die Kandidat/innen bis zum 15. Juni 2023 aus.
- Ausgewählte Kandidat/innen werden bis zum 30. Juni 2023 in die Task Force aufgenommen und nehmen an der nächsten Sitzung der Task Force teil.
Result
SJ, Kasyap, Noe, Billinghurst, and Galahad were appointed as Volunteer Advisory Members in July 2023.

Wikimania 2023 session "Sister Projects: past, present and the glorious future"
The workshop was organised and run by the Sister Projects Taskforce members + the Chair of Community Affairs Committee Shani Evenstein Sigalov.

2023
The Sister Project Taskforce currently consists of 6 Trustees (Natalia Timkiv, Esra'a Al Shafei, Mike Peel, Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight, Lorenzo Llosa and Victoria Doronina) as well as five volunteers selected after an open call – Bilinghurst, Sj, Noe, Kasyap, Galahad.
The Sister Project Taskforce work in 2023:
The Taskforce had nine meetings of the Taskforce in 2023, including a hybrid – in Singapore, where we ran a workshop on Sister Projects during the Wikimania 2023. Rosie and Lorenzo had run a similar workshop in Toronto during the Conference North America 2023. The results of the workshops were incorporated into the Taskforce group.
As a result of our work, we have drafted documents pertinent to the Sister project's lifecycle. In 2024, we will present these documents to the Community Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees.
2024
- We have presented the Draft Procedure for the Siblings Project Lifecycle to the Community Affairs Committee, which approved the public consultation commencing on 13th May 2024.
- As a result of the public consultation, a revised procedure was developed.
- The Community Affairs Committee approved the revised procedure.
- The Community Affairs Committee approved two tests to implement the procedure—one to consider opening a Sister Project and one to consider closing it.
- SPTF considered the case of the Wikispore and Wikinews correspondingly and presented them to the Community Affairs Committee.
- We will run public consultations about these projects in 2025.
- We are in the process of closing the historical applications up to 2023, starting with the "Stale proposals".
- A former trustee, Rosie and a staff member Sai Suman Cherukuwa were appointed Volunteer Advisory Members.

We are preparing for the public consultation about Wikispore and Wikinews.

The Community Affairs Committee (CAC) of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees assigned the Sister Projects Task Force (SPTF) to update and implement a procedure for assessing the lifecycle of Sister Projects – wiki projects supported by Wikimedia Foundation (WMF).
A vision of relevant, accessible, and impactful free knowledge has always guided the Wikimedia Movement. As the ecosystem of Wikimedia projects continues to evolve, it is essential that we periodically review existing projects to ensure they remain aligned with our goals and community capacity.
Despite their noble intent, some projects may no longer effectively serve their original purpose. Reviewing such projects is not about giving up – it's about responsible stewardship of shared resources. Volunteer time, staff support, infrastructure, and community attention are finite, and the non-technical costs tend to grow significantly as our ecosystem has entered a different age of the internet than the one we were founded in. Supporting inactive projects or projects that didn't meet our ambitions can unintentionally divert these resources from areas with more potential impact.
Moreover, maintaining projects that no longer reflect the quality and reliability of the Wikimedia name stands for, involves a reputational risk. An abandoned or less reliable project affects trust in the Wikimedia movement.
Lastly, failing to sunset or reimagine projects that are no longer working can make it much harder to start new ones. When the community feels bound to every past decision – no matter how outdated – we risk stagnation. A healthy ecosystem must allow for evolution, adaptation, and, when necessary, letting go. If we create the expectation that every project must exist indefinitely, we limit our ability to experiment and innovate.
Because of this, SPTF reviewed two requests concerning the lifecycle of the Sister Projects to work through and demonstrate the review process. We chose Wikispore as a case study for a possible new Sister Project opening and Wikinews as a case study for a review of an existing project. Preliminary findings were discussed with the CAC, and a community consultation on both proposals was recommended.

November 2025
The Sister Project Task Force ran a consultation on the future of Wikinews and Wikispore, as well as to understand how to best create structures for how to start and close Wikimedia projects, between 26 June and 15 August. Their recommendations to the Community Affairs Committee of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees have now been published on Meta-Wiki.
In summary, the task force recommends to:
- Keep the current Wikispore's technical setup, as it is functioning and supports ongoing experimentation; and explore options for closer alignment with the Incubator.
- Plan for the archival of all editions of Wikinews, and support the exploration of new paradigms for Wikimedia news content by community members.
The next step is for the Board of Trustees to discuss the consultation and the recommendations coming out of it, and take a decision.
