Spam blacklist logging helper[edit]

Hello!

Hello Herbythyme, sometime ago you mentioned that some Javascript help with the blacklist logging would be useful. Could you give me some specs? Then I might be able to whip something up. As far as I understand on the /Log subpage all additions and removals from the list are logged. Are the entries from the list just copied onto the page? Or is the point to add a link to the request? Do the requests all come from the blacklist's talk page, or are there other sources (there seems to be a bot making requests). How would you imagine a JS helper? Should it add a form to the section-editmode on the blacklist talkpage which would allow to formulate a response and at the same time propose a regexp from the {{linksummary}} template (with automatic posting to both the blacklist and the log)? What about entry-removal from the blacklist? --Dschwen 14:40, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi & sorry for the delay. I really am pretty inactive here now & you would be far better posting on the BL talk page. I am sure that assistance will be gratefully received there :). Thanks --Herby talk thyme 09:03, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Log/archive protection[edit]

You may want to see User_talk:Mike.lifeguard#Protections. I've protected the rest of the logs. I don't see an issue with the logs being protected; if the spam blacklist were done properly those would be real logs and hence entirely uneditable.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:15, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Err[edit]

This site looks like spam to me? --Herby talk thyme 15:12, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As does the one here. Please stop closing these. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 15:13, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'll revert them. Techman224Talk 15:19, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also is cablelink.com.ph spam too? Techman224Talk 15:21, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The article fr:Milli_Vanilli seams to be good, the link there is not spam. Techman224Talk 15:29, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In what sense of the word can that site be called "good"? It has nothing to do with Milli Vanilli at all - did you go on the site? --Herby talk thyme 15:32, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I blocked this guy for 31 hours on en:wiki for disruption and he seems to have followed me here; as a result, I've now blocked him there for a month. I have the feeling...[edit]

... that there is someone, one of, imho, our best admins we had, who layed the buttons aside for a while, could find them quite useful again.

Kind regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 14:09, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ah but you then beat me to the footballer image (only just!) so maybe I don't need them!
Thanks birdy - as you know I take rights fairly seriously - I'll think about it. There have been one or two times when I have missed them here. Regards --Herby talk thyme 16:56, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, please do think about it, I know You take it very serious, which is good. You know I would be happy. Certainly I do not beat people, nor do I intend to, I just act if I see something, if someone else gets to it, I am more than happy. I saw You were often seeing vandalism before anyone else did here, and that is why I just thought it would be handy and everyone here would benefit from it :)
Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 17:01, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks both - I'll reflect on it. Regards --Herby talk thyme 19:22, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It would be great to have you back. As far as I am concerned you resigned voluntarily under non controversial circumstances so your bits are yours for the asking. That's my view anyway. ++Lar: t/c 15:54, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I share all above's views completely, I saw quite some speedy requests by you and thought "why the hell he gave his rights away??". It would be good to have you back as sysop here. :o) You are definitely one who uses them. Best regards, --Thogo (talk) 12:15, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

noindex[edit]

I think the rationale makes since. What are your thoughts about restoring the NOINDEX? Cheers - NonvocalScream 03:47, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Personally I'd take the query to Meta:Babel. The ip was being highly selective about the noindex pages. To me there should be a community consensus. --Herby talk thyme 07:24, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No problem :) Regards --Herby talk thyme 08:28, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Herbythyme! Just out of curiosity, what was the reason you saw to block this user? I understand that his talk page may not be the ideal place to add texts about 'wedding dresses', but the text had no external links, no brand names, nothing that could be seen as a clear advertisement, so it was in all effects harmful. Can a text simply out of context be considered advertising? Thanks. Capmo 10:10, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good point and it made me think at least!
In the end the block reasons on Meta are a bit limited (I should do something about it). Commons has one about "continuing to create out of scope pages after warnings" which would be a better description. I'll change the block & maybe make it a week or so too - AGF. However it is clear that they do not get the point of Meta & I'm not sure that they will? Comments welcome tho. Regards --Herby talk thyme 10:14, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, you reduced the block period, that's fine by me. Let's hope the user understood what Meta is for, so as to act accordingly in the future. Regards —Capmo 14:34, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps[edit]

Perhaps you already know about this. At least one has been created on commons so you may want to have a look and inform the others with checkuser-l (if not already done) :D. Regards. —Dferg (talk) 10:06, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My user talk page?[edit]

I would like to know why my user talk page was deleted. If anything, it should have been reverted. A user was interested in collaborating with me on a potential Simple French page, but now that information has been swept away and I am unlikely to find it again. I suppose it's since been cleared from the Wiki cache, but I thought I'd ask whether there was any way to retrieve it... Also, I've noticed that my user page has also changed, and that my signature now reads "Ashley" instead of "SweetNightmares." Was this related to the vandalism carried out on my user talk page, or did a Wiki minion screw up my account? Ashley 06:20, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting - you are talking about a deletion in September 2008 which you have just noticed on which there was solely a test edit from an IP address not a user consisting of =P.
The reason your signature reads as it does is that you (or someone with access to your password and account) has edited it to read "Ashley" rather than the default setting. Let's just say that I am far more puzzled than you. --Herby talk thyme 12:06, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Mr Herby[edit]

Yes I remember you. You're not around on WB much though nowadays are you? Yes, I haven't changed. There has to be somebody to raise that lone oppose vote for the popular candidate or that solo supportive vote for the no-hoper. Hope you're doing well? What wikiland project are you most active on nowadays?--Xania 21:23, 8 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

Hi Herby. Thanks for your work with those {{delete}} tagging (you know, you could have done that yourself... But I do not want to "bite" you :) ) Very best, — Dferg (talk) 15:08, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - however as I have no rights anywhere else I cannot be an admin here :). I noticed you picked up that it was cross wiki too - thanks --Herby talk thyme 15:15, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
blubb, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 15:33, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting - does that work for Meta actions? (no idea if anyone would support me tho...:)) --Herby talk thyme 15:34, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Give it a try, then we will see ;o) --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 15:38, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
However based on this I'd not be able to actually do anything here by the look of it? I confess there have been a few times recently I'd have used the rights here. --Herby talk thyme 15:43, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Did You not mention something about crosswikiness, I was only refering to that, but if You need some sysopstatus anywhere to rebecome sysop here let me know, I can arrange that :) --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 15:46, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I did but only that Dferg had spotted the fact that the spammer was operating across wikis. I could become a sysop again in some places but - as you know very well - with rights come obligations and I'm not feeling like that at present. I appreciate your thoughts very much and hope all is well with you. --Herby talk thyme 16:25, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades... (our budget is smaller than Commons)

Herbythyme, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Meta. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests for deletion, but also Talk:Spam blacklist and Talk:Interwiki map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

A tip: add this page Meta:Administrators' discussion index to your watchlist, it tracks the latest activity to various sections of many of the important pages.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-admin @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading although it doesn't always completely apply here at Meta.

Please also check or add your entry to Meta:Administrators#List_of_administrators and the Template:List of administrators.

Hello Herby, I know that as a new admin you must be eager to do stuff, but removing normal background info from a user page isn't it. Wishing you all the best, Guido den Broeder 11:22, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've been an admin here for some years - I just had a break for a while. The material is on an indef blocked user page promoting their own website. That to me is off the scope of Meta. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 12:46, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I see no promotion. It's just background info like most user pages show. Whether the user is blocked is entirely irrelevant,

Hard to answer as I don't know who you are. I guess the other part of the answer from what you said above is "have you sockpuppeted elsewhere?" --Herby talk thyme 07:34, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Unblock my Account[edit]

Jpgordon blocked my account on Wikipedia for abuse of multiple accounts even though I don't see how I have sockpuppeted using the account. 71.94.158.203 18:49, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You probably should take it up with Jpg. However I can see a number of user accounts that appear related on one IP (including one which is currently unblocked but I'll get to that later) so barring an explanation of why so many accounts are on one IP puppetry looks likely.
I told the user to unblock my account but the user said "shot yourself in the foot there" in the user's reply, which meant that the user disabled anonymous editing for 2 weeks after my accounts were blocked on wikipedia. 71.94.158.203 04:38, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Given that you seem to agree that you were using multiple accounts (you say "my accounts") then I think we are done here. --Herby talk thyme 08:02, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I meant that I was using one account here and multiple accounts on wikipedia. When I created an account with the username being Uw-ublock and I was told that it was against policy, I made an unblock request so I could change my username, but before I had the time to do it, my accounts were blocked by Jpgordon for abusing multiple accounts. 71.94.158.203 19:03, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Request[edit]

Could you please take a look at current requests for unblock? Thanks. 95.220.114.11 07:54, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not got much time I'm afraid (nor do I know anything about the ones there which makes it harder). --Herby talk thyme 08:00, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I don't understand this deletion. The image isn't off-topic (it's used on Wikimedia Foundation Board election pages) and it isn't unlicensed (the upload summary clearly specifies a license—GFDL). Is there something I'm missing? It seems like it shouldn't have been deleted. Cheers. --MZMcBride 23:39, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I understand what you are saying. When the user was unblocked I guess the image was ok. However given the fact that he is blocked/locked then the image looks plain promotional as far as I am concerned. --Herby talk thyme 07:42, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Herby, please stop this childishness. The image is not more promotional than any other random image. Blocks have no baring on this. Guido den Broeder 10:59, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
childishness hum - we must agree to differ. I am also getting tired of you stalking me - thanks --Herby talk thyme 11:13, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
We call that a projection. You appear on my radar because you are harassing a friend of mine. Guido den Broeder 17:30, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So now that he is blocked, it is necessary to erase all traces of him from Meta in case it looks promotional? Please check where the image is still in use before deciding that they are no longer required[2] and deleting them. —Joshua Issac 12:26, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe you should check stuff out first - that one you point to the uploader requested its deletion requesting privacy... Looking forward to the apology --Herby talk thyme 12:32, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I had gone through both the links to the image and CastAStone's contributions history before commenting, and found nothing about a deletion request; however, if he did request deletion, then I am sorry for bringing it up. Do you have a similar rationale for the deletion of Gregory Kohs's image? All the photos on the WMF candidates pages could be regarded as promotional, since the candidates are trying to get the reader to vote for them. --Joshua Issac 13:20, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You will find there is still a picture of TheKohser here (as far as I recall - actually here). The one I removed gave far more prominence to his website as it did to him (a very small portion of his face appears just at the side of the image which is covered with his web address) as such it is promotional not a "user image". I have do nothing more or less than I would do to such an image wherever/whenever I found it.
I assume you do not believe me on the other one - please contact any admin of your choice to examine the user's posting regarding deletion and then you will be able to apologise honestly --Herby talk thyme 13:32, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I did believe you and my apology was honest; my first reply was not to imply that I did not believe you, but to make it clear that I had "checked stuff out" before posting. There is no need for further verification of the user's request to have the image deleted. Happy editing! --Joshua Issac 14:45, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, didn't realize there was another image on Commons. Fair enough. Cheers. --MZMcBride 05:06, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

user:NRSFD is as my userpage, so I'd like to do what I will with it.

As you can see I'm trying to have vandalised content restored on en:Wikipedia.

Unfortunately one user keeps blocking me with excuses like "trolling", "personal attacks", "being disruptive" "sockpuppet creation" bla bla bla when all I am doing is trying to highlight my concerns in a reasonable manner.

Any dissent is quashed.

This is an important manner across co-ordination of wikis because they are stifling free speech and wikibullying one user for doing exactly what you're supposed to do.

As you can see I will fight this -- I won't bend over and take it like they want me to.

That is why I have come to meta.

You seem like a reasonable person NRSFD 15:01, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I wanted to tell you I appreciated your message. Some people don't care to answer or even erase the message; well of course it's their right but well if we want to spread knowledge we'd better hear what the others have to say. You're totally right, politics, although needed, ruin many things. Having a Catalan, an Esperanto or Mayan Chapter shouldn't be political issues since the political issue was in creating or not (small/unofficial/stateless) language (or dialectal!) Wikipedias but then since you've created them why not grant the same rights to obtain bigger structures if you're organized enough and willing/able to build many things... it's somewhat illogical but well, it's just a reproduction of the current statal physical and mental structures. In any case, if you ever need something from me (it seems as though you're going around here soon), just let me know (even though I live in the Perpignan area) I'll be glad to help. Take care, enjoy the weather and your future trip to Catalonia. Take care! Capsot 14:27, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
