Regarding Wikipedia Zero and Mobile partnerships... I made a map :-)

Wikipedia Zero for all languages (blue) and some languages (green)

Hi,

I made a map of where Wikipedia Zero is active seperated into those countries where it's available for all languages and those where it's only available in some languages. I thought it might be usefull. --U5K0 (talk) 09:36, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Added to both. I would appreciate it if someone on the Zero team could check it, or move the images to a better location. PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:22, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I like it a lot. One suggestion -- rather than color coding for all languages vs some, I think it's more useful to code the countries by version of Wikipedia Zero. This is the core distinction between partners in fact. There are two variants, partners that offer 1) M or M&Z, or 2) Just Z. For reference, M=m.wikipedia (full mobile version), Z=zero.wikipedia (text-only version). Akapoor (WMF) (talk) 15:09, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@U5K0: reply? PiRSquared17 (talk) 02:59, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'll get on that.. the info is in the table right? --U5K0 (talk) 07:01, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's in this table, and seems to be up-to-date. PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:27, 27 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Under Dutch tax law donations are also deductible.

To see the foundation's registration, search on: http://www.belastingdienst.nl/rekenhulpen/giften/anbi_zoeken/ Or a direct link to the search result (unfortunately without a proper domain name, so it looks a bit shady): http://213.197.219.132/anbi_zoeken_lwcm/search.php?q=wikimedia

If desired, I could write a short Dutch text describing the situation for people wanting to donate in the Netherlands.

I think a Dutch passage would fit into that page more than an English one, as all the others are written in the country's main language. But can anyone else check this? PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:16, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, we actually already had some info on the situation in the Netherlands at wmf:Tax Deductibility/nl. I've added that to the wmf:Deductibility of donations page as well. Peter Coombe (WMF) (talk) 16:05, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No bitcoin?

Please see this explanation for why the Wikimedia Foundation does not (currently) accept bitcoin donations. Sorry for the inconvenience. PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:43, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Error in David villa's goals at barcelona

Spanish footballer David Villa's page list that he scored 33 goals in 77 appereances but he had scored 48 goals in 119 appereances. according to many sites like goal.com- http://www.goal.com/en/news/1717/editorial/2013/07/09/4103913/striking-the-balance-what-next-for-barcelona-after-david?ICID=PP_1713

In this link they have listed a table accounting his goals and appereances. Kindly please edit that as i am a fan of him.

Are you talking about Wikipedia? I don't think the website has soccer-related information on it.--Jasper Deng (talk) 19:42, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you have a Wikipedia account with at least 10 edits that is at least 4 days old, you can just edit the article. Otherwise, clicking that link will bring you to a page explaining how to submit an edit request. Simplify the sidebar

The sidebar has plenty of cruft, is hard to navigate, and is organized poorly. I'm not sure the best way to modernize the organization. Ideas?  ono  17:28, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can you be more specific about what you find lacking? The organization seems fairly logical to me, for example. --MZMcBride (talk) 06:41, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikibook section in Our projects

In some translation pages the logo of this project is too big (probably the size parameter is missing). Pages:

Thank you for the feedback! I have fixed this. PiRSquared17 (talk) 01:36, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In some translation pages, the logo of Wikimedia family tree is in older version (picture); some of them (Français, Italiano & Nederlands) has new version (picture) and some has no at all. Can this be unified?

I agree, but I don't understand why we have two separate versions in the first place, so I asked on Commons. Do people still want the old non-Wikivoyage, non-Wikidata one? Of course, it will need to be updated after a new Wikivoyage logo is chosen. Anyway, I'll do this for the "Our projects" pages. Thank you for reporting this. PiRSquared17 (talk) 12:00, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done, sorry for the delay (was busy with other stuff). If the old image is updated on Commons, my edits should be reverted. I don't mind rollbacking them if it's faster :) PiRSquared17 (talk) 16:26, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

a way to improve language preferences~

Hi thanks for your help on creating this awesome website!!! I love you guys.

I have one idea that will surely help certain people reading the webpages.

As you know I am a Chinese reader and for different Chinese people from different places we have different format of characters; I notice there are usually four ways of displaying the same website for the convenience of different Chinese people and we can choose the most convenient format we like, which is good. The only problem is that every time I click a link within the articles that leads me to a new page I will have to re-select the format of characters again. Since I read wikipedia pages A LOT, this selection process wastes quite some time of mine. My suggestion is that maybe wikipedia can remember my choice of language preferences and stay like that for my reading; in that case I will not have to spend as much time selecting languages as I do now.

Thanks again, god bless you, and I will keep donating money to make you better! : )

Best wishes,

Shane

Hello! Thank you for your support of Wikimedia's mission. :-) I think I have a solution to your zh.wikipedia.org (Chinese WIkipedia) problem, but I'll also ask a native Chinese volunteer: if you zh:Special:CreateAccount, then you can set your preferred variant (zh-TW, zh-HK, etc.) in your preferences page. There may be a way to do this without creating an account as well, but I couldn't find it. (Disclaimer: I don't represent the Wikimedia Foundation in any way. I am a volunteer contributor.) Cheers, PiRSquared17 (talk) 01:27, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, like what PiRSquared17 pointed out, it is best to create an account on Wikipedia and set the language preferences in Special:Preferences. This way, your language variant will be remembered and the content will be served in that variant accordingly. --Hydriz (talk) 02:46, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

Hello I find wikipedia very useful indeed, I'd like it to keep going. However, donating to keep it alive for everyone (including non-donors) does not seem fair. I would gladly donate money in exchange for a special privilege (wikipedia related) different from that of non-donors. it could be the simplest thing, but it would make a difference. Sincerely Omar Jimenez. architect_ok(_AT_)hotmail.com

What do you consider as a special privilege? Do you want the WMF to restrict some special content and make it visible to donors only? That wouldn't be donations then, anymore … Vogone talk 15:40, 26 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

So, you are the #4 website, and you don't even accept bitcoin as a donation option?!

I am a volunteer and do not represent the Wikimedia Foundation in any way, but I suggest you read this explanation for why the Wikimedia Foundation does not (currently) accept bitcoin donations. Sorry for the inconvenience. PiRSquared17 (talk) 01:20, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

Your information and reading are the best. You have provided more information than any encyclopedia I have ever read. My favorite part of looking up information through your method Wikipedia is if I am not clear about anything there is that blue line to help me search more and more and more... I love Wikipedia for this and many other things that you all provide. In any group discussion when any of us have a question someone always states "Wikipedia it," and you will find it.

Thank you very much. We are so pleased that you have found the Wikimedia projects useful. AGK [•] 23:00, 21 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

wikimediafoundation.org

It's a shame that the wikimediafoundation.org website is completely closed access, and I would say, contrary to the spirit of the movement, and open discussion.

It would be easy enough to protect pages where required.

RFC watcher (talk)

I would agree, but it's a site we don't want spam or vandalism on, period.--Jasper Deng (talk) 03:25, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Spam according to who? The criteria for notability by wiki editors is biased and not at all in keeping with the spirit of Wikipedia.

I'd like to know what the WMF thought a 'public place' and a 'private place' were when this resolution was adopted. There are some very counterintuitive definitions being floated around. --Elvey (talk) 21:08, 10 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think it would be really nice if the foundation would add Gender Identity and Gender Expression to the list so that transgendered people are included in this clause.

In practice, I think they are already included (orientation/gender), but the WMF might want to add this to clarify. I don't feel like I should do this without board/staff approval, so I'll let one of them reply. PiRSquared17 (talk) 02:56, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is a general gross misunderstanding, and the lack of Gender Identity and Gender Expression has resulted in legal discrimination (not at WP, but elsewhere) despite discrimination of Gender being prohibited.

File:S-3A VS-29 with Tupolev Tu-95 1979

The information provided for this picture is incorrect. This picture was taken during the Kitty Hawk cruise in 1981.

The VS-29 S-3A pictured is being flown by LCDR A. MCMAHON. During the previous cycle, I was flying the S-3A that identified the TU-95 inbound to the USS Kitty Hawk battle group. The COTAC with me on this flight was LT Kenny Edwards.

With the limited ESM equipment on board the S-3A, LT Edwards was able to detect and discriminate the electromagnetic data specific to the TU-95. The astonishing fact is that he did so before the EA-6B airborne during that cycle. It was the following cycle when LCDR MCMAHON took advantage of the photo shoot, which rendered this picture.

One of the F-14s took advantage of the photo shoot, as well. There were two squadrons on board the Kitty Hawk: VF-11 and VF-51. I can't remember the pilot's name. Unknown to just about every person on board the ship, this F-14 pilot spoke fluent Russian. He initiated a conversation with the Russian crew, which precipitated a thorough debrief upon his return to the ship.

Last, one of the Russian crew members had fun showing Playboy center folds to the various crew members taking advantage of the photo op. It was at that point and time I realized Russian aircrews were no different then us.

Many trolls/editors think that they are the first and last voice when it comes to notability and to question them on anything you risk being IP blocked or banned from any worthwhile contributions. The purpose of wiki was to be a central location for the sharing of information and facts...not the censored and biased information that is controlled by a network of "volunteers" that deem whether or not they deem you worthy of inclusion. Do not donate unless they change these ridiculous criteria needs

Regarding Terms of Use

Dear Sirs: You need to contact the current NV Assembly in Carson, NV. I am the current Governor of NV; HRH QUEEN and Admiral from the Pentagon that has taken over NV since 2008. I am HRH Mary Jane Strickland; it is on my passport and D/L from NV, USA since I bought a new d/l in 2010. The nature of the changes are because of land mass sinking on the eastern sea board and now western sea board; and the surrender of President Obama to an oriental nation that doesn't have the power to take over what I own and control per the Articles of Confederation back in 1770s and earlier.

I am trying to get any info off your site about Sandovals; they were taken to court 2012 again about the issues: Brian Sandoval never ran for Governor in NV. You can't put him as that office or title. Second Martin Sandoval whom did run; went to IL and became a Senator. I was pulled up when there was a death of Judge Stringfield whom became an assumed Governor for a short time instead of Brian or Martin Sandoval. I came back to the State of NV and was living and working here in Elko, NV in 2009 from OR and trying to get regular employment to get money coming in to eat and sleep somewhere. While I had a small income from other areas. I was trying to locate missing grandchildren, and seeing if my daughter was alive anywhere in USA. I have Governor # of 48204 you can check with law enforcement also please. I hate all the false info that is out about whom is in charge of State and Senator jobs. And whom is allowed to work in them; only Americans.

Hi, I'm a long time user of Wikimedia, and I think it is a great tool. It has helped me many times, so thanks.

However, I was very surprised to find a subject, "roman numerals", that was not covered. I have forgotten the letter for 500. I believe that it may be "d". So I came here for a quick reminder and to my surprise, I found nothing!

Maybe we need a page for roman numerals! What they are, when they were used, how they were used, the limitations, and how they were replaced with a better system.

Actually, I was wondering how large a number could be represented with roman numerals. For example, MMMDCCCLXXXVIII Is this 3,888?

            MMMIMICIX Is this 3,999?
MMMM Is this 4,000? Is there any limit to how many M,s are allowed, or are there more letters that I don't know?

Thank you, Wayne Fuqua DeWire@Juno.Com --69.228.170.173 21:16, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! The page you are looking for is on Wikipedia already. 'D' is indeed the symbol for 500. The article discusses large numbers in Roman numerals. You can use a Roman numeral converter to check, for example this page or Wolfram Alpha (which is great for many things). PiRSquared17 (talk) 22:35, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

I think the work being done by Wiki is heroic.

Therefore - even though the exchange rate made my donation (dollar for dollar) much more expensive for me than appeared on your bank balance I still put myself out there and donated quite a bit more than requested.

It was meant to be a one time donation. And thus far I have donated twice.

My computer has a fixed IP address. So how come Wiki is still asking me to donate? Again. And again?

I have done my bit. Your requests for financial contribution don't acknowledge that someone may have donated previously and now impinge on my sense of fair play.

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

I became familiar with Wikipaedia several years ago ......but only as a way to obtain info on a specific subject or to research an item of interest from news of the day in Canada. Now I see it is much more than I thought. The world of instant technological innovation followed by change often initiated by social media discussions, etc. brings much good to the world, in general. However, along with the good stuff I'm learning through the trial/error route many of the pitfalls of such innovative processes. Keeping ahead of the nasty folks who create havoc with systems or those who use their energies for neferious reasons is an ongoing task that challenges ones sanity.

I'm keen to understand and keep up with what's new but for the moment, I've had to take a personal time-out-from-email, facebook, twitter, web sites, and the world of ISPs, browsers, servers, etc. etc. etc. Here I am today, post-time out! It feels like I've just begun again and I don't like what I see. Having been hacked, lost money, etc. my challenge today is to understand Internet security, thus I've found your Zone. I'm of an age where I feel most fortunate to have struggled through the 70's, 80's, 90'3 and now in the second decade of this century. I am able to use e-mail, cell-phones, and learning an Apple Ipad (tough for this soul) while trying to keep afloat of the hardware/software challenges. I'm retired and enjoy an active life style. I personally want to thank you and the Staff of dedicated souls in wikipaedia. Thank you.

A breakdown of the transaction fees deducted from the donation amount for each type of payment would be extremely helpful to those of us who have multiple payment options available and who wish to maximize the amount of our donation that will actually reach Wikimedia Foundation. According to Paypal, Amazon and Paypal presently charge the same rates (2.9% + $0.30 per transaction, though Paypal at least reduces this to 2.2% + $0.30 for nonprofits - not sure about Amazon), but I don't know how this stacks up to debit and credit transactions. --129.89.40.216 15:25, 3 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Ads on wikipedia

Stop begging for handouts and put ads on your site. Please consider the following thoughtful and constructive arguments for your solution to the continual prosperity of wikipedia:

1) Intelligent ads are actually a *service* to both viewers and advertisers. When a buyer finds a new product that he/she wanted but didn't know about, everybody wins, and the middleman has provided a legitimate service.

2) By posting this annoying banner on your website, begging for an arbitrary handout in exchange for a service that you already provide to everyone for free, you're actually running a very intrusive and bothersome GIANT ad, which NOBODY is interested in. You're in fact doing the very thing that you are saying you won't do.

3) By not running ads, you also continue to place into jeopardy, all the billions of bytes of priceless information that we have contributed to the global community. That information belongs to everyone, all that you are doing is providing the hosting service. As the host, you are the caretaker of our data. It's your responsibility to ensure the safety of the property that we have entrusted to you. Make the right decision, change your policy to ensure the forever safety of our data.

-Rob Christian rm.rf.etc@gmail.com

Hello Rob ("rm -rf /etc"). You may be interested in this FAQ question about this.
A large part of the Wikimedia community (and the WMF) feel that putting ads in an educational website would hurt the integrity of the project. The main arguments against advertising are:
  • The readers' (and our editors') privacy (we don't want to give ad agencies our readers' details)
  • Neutrality. If there are ads in an article, maybe companies will ask for Wikipedia to write nice biased articles for them. We don't want to make it seem like companies are in charge of the content. The community, and ultimately the WMF and the Board, are in charge of the content. How can we say that spam is not allowed in Wikipedia when there is spam all over every article?
  • The community. A large part of our editors might leave over this. Some might fork Wikipedia a la Enciclopedia Libre Universal en Español.
That said, there are some Wikipedians who agree with you: w:Wikipedia:Funding Wikipedia through advertisements. (I am just a volunteer) PiRSquared17 (talk) 21:17, 4 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Ways to Give

I've got some bitcoins and litecoins I would donate, and I think wikipedia accepting these currencies would be mutually beneficially for all communities involved. Not to mention, this would be insanely easy to setup... You guys could have it done by this afternoon. Plus, the cryptocurrency community would lose their sh*t and probably end your fundraiser just to make a point.

but whatever. It's your site... :p

Please see this explanation for why the Wikimedia Foundation does not (currently) accept bitcoin donations. Sorry for the inconvenience. (Note: I am not employed by the Wikimedia Foundation; I'm a volunteer contributor.) PiRSquared17 (talk) 00:57, 5 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I suggest yu use one of the online Bitcoin/Litecoin converters (backed by a common bank) to convert them into common currencies to transfer to the WMF. Legal converters are backed by banks that will want first that you authentify your identity to accept converting these cyptocurrencies into currencies with legal tender (this is a often a legal requirement of these banks).
Some cytocurrencies don't ask for your identity, but the transactions are at your own risks, and the converting rate may not be advantageous, or they will take excessive amounts of your cryptocoins to process your transaction. These cyptocurrencies are exposed to hihh risks if you want to convert them back to normal currencies. You've been warned !
And they are extremely risky to invert in as they are highly speculative (much more than any legal tender currency or stock value). You absolutely cannot warranty the value of your wallet including during the time needed to process a conversion transaction (those transactions are really too long for cryptocurrencies when they are really too much volatile). For exampel the Bitcoin value has quadrupled in just two weeks, but it has also known some brutal falls where it lost more than 30% of its value in a similar very short time. Given the time needed to process this type of currency (could be more than one week), this means that transaction processors need to take very high transaction fees to accept your order.
These cryptocurrencies have absolutely no liquidity, their value is completely artificial (potentially void) until the time you'll have been able to convert them back to standard currencies in regular bank accounts (so you need to find "buyers" for your Bitcoin sale offer and your Bitcoins sell offer may also nver be accepted in the virtual markets).
You should also know that Bitcoins are currently under attack by "selfish" hackers, but also by a growing set with millions of PC harnessed by malwares, trying to mine enormous quantities of Bitcoins in order to control it and break its security chain. If the security breach succeeds, lots of owners of Bitcoins will have their wallets become completely void, because processors will refuse to make any transactions with some very long chains of transactions. So the value of lots of wallets could become suddenly void, at any time, without any prior notice (and you'll find no one to help you, these wallets currently have absolutely no institution accepting to warranty at least a minimum value in a reasonnable recovery time). Bitcoin wallets are like 1917 Russian stocks, their last owner will loose everything if this sudden fall ever happens.
It's certainly the main reason why the WMF cannot accept them: you have to endorse the financial risk yourself by converting them first to your own regular bank account (and pay the excessive fees!). verdy_p (talk) 19:50, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It could be a user preference for notifications. For now only the top banner style is supported, opening popup windows notifications are not supported.
Popup windows cause evident troubles on smartphones, or frequently cause windows stacking for long behind the browser window, using precious memory, they also require more clicks to close each one, and are harassing users that want to use other applications in background than just their browser with an easy switch from the browser to the other, or from one tab to another on an unrelated site).
In-document notifications are easier to manage by users, and you can define preferences if you don't want to see most of them, they don't require more clics to close them, and they are much less restricted.
An expected coming change will avoid sending you the same global notification message across multiple Wikimedia sites you may visit when you are connected with your unified "single-user-login" (SUL) login. verdy_p (talk) 19:39, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Good Morning

I just donated $250 to Wikipedia; I believe that unless we have vital resources like this site for students and for those who are seeking more specific background to their questions, they will no longer be available as resources. I do not use Wikipedia frequently but when I have done so, the information has been accurate, informative, well-organized and well written.

I want to thank you for myself as well as to those who may not be in a financial position to donate...my donation is for them.

Keep up the good work!

Here's a thought:

Fundraise at the beginning of the school year in September when students still have some disposable income. It's harder to dig up some buck$ for Wiki in December when the semester's budget is wrapping up, and the Christmas gift list has just sucked the average disposable income pot down into the black hole of Black Monday!

I asked on Talk:Fundraising 2013. PiRSquared17 (talk) 04:23, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the feedback. In common with many other non-profits we do find that December is generally the best time of year for fundraising, so that's when we hold our largest drive. Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

i have contributed $35 a couple of times before, but I am finding that your articles are very biased. This year I will not be contributing. The most current entry that I have problems with is aspartame. Calling the very true symptoms of eating methanol an internet hoax is unfounded. This article appears to be written by the drug industry. If you have achy joints, my suggestion would be to lay off artificial sweeteners and see what you think then of the "internet hoax." Users have no reason to not want to eat this toxic stuff if it truly causes no problems.

Hello. Please bring this up at the talk-page for that article. The Wikimedia Foundation doesn't write the content of Wikipedia articles; volunteers do. Wikipedia does have a goal of being neutral. So, if you think it is biased, you should discuss it on the talk page of "Aspartame" or the "Aspartame controversy" page. There has already been a lot of discussion on both. I would like to create a page for Public Health Nursing and contribute content to the page.

please inform me in the method of submitting content.

I am:

Steve Garascia RN, MSN, 119 Maple Ridge Drive Monmouth, Maine 04259

1-207-215-4508

steve.garascia@maine.gov

I am a Supervisor with Maine Public Health Nursing and believe there should be information about the history and current work of PHN at Wikipedia.

Hello Mr. Garascia. You don't need to ask to contribute content. You do not even need to create an account, but it is recommended. To create a Wikipedia article, see this guide.
There is already a page called "Public health nursing". You can edit it by clicking the "edit" tab on the page. I recommend you read the tutorial. You can ask at the "Teahouse" (help page) if you need guidance.
I would personally recommend that you create an account on Wikipedia, and read the tutorial there. You should probably note that you work for Maine Public Health Nursing if you intend to create an article on that particular topic. fundraising banner problems and faq problems

On wikipedia, there is a banner asking for money. It has been there for months and months. It links to this FAQ https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/FAQ/en#Why_doesn.27t_Wikipedia_use_ads_for_revenue.3F which says you don't use ads. But the banner appearing all the time is just the same as an ad. In addition, the banner always says if enough people give the fundraiser will be over - but it never ends. I point this out because it looks bad. The most irritating thing is that the banner appears with a small time lag, just long enough to mean half the time you click on it when you were trying to click on the search box at the top. If it has to be there permanently, could it at least have a permanent slot that does not affect the loading of the page? And can you update the FAQ? And change the banner so it does not promise an end (unless you really mean to end it)? Thanks, hope this feedback is useful.184.147.136.249

I asked on Talk:Fundraising 2013. PiRSquared17 (talk) 04:23, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to hear you've been seeing the banner so much. In the past few months (up until December) we have been using cookies to limit the number of banners that each user sees to just one or two. If you have cookies disabled in your browser, or set to clear on closing, then this could be why you have been seeing more than expected.
Now we are running full scale, and approximately half-way to reaching our target. You can always hide the banner by clicking the small X in the top right (although note that you must also have cookies enabled for this to work).
Unfortunately the slight delay of the banner loading is unavoidable, as we have to serve different banners in different countries. We have worked hard to get this down to a minimum. Peter Coombe (WMF) (talk) 21:46, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding donation methods

Wikipedia is one of the founding fathers of the internet. the wikimedia foundation is a driving force behind the great innovation and evolution of humanity in the digital age. I'm disappointed that you don't accept the future of money (cryptocurrency) as a method of donation. while i was in the military I cumulatively donated over $500 to the wikimedia foundation, however you won't see anything else from me unless you correct this oversight and start accepting bitcoin. it takes seconds to download a wallet and get a BTC address that you can post on the donation page. there is no excuse for this.

in the age of information, ignorance is a choice

Hi. Although the Wikimedia Foundation does not accept bitcoin (see FAQ), you can use bitpay. You may discuss this (or read existing discussion) in the section above: #Regarding_Ways_to_Give_3. PiRSquared17 (talk) 04:41, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding cryptographic currencies

Great organizations survive because of innovation. wikimedia is struggling at the moment because the culture surrounding it is becoming increasingly hostile to novel ideas and "new blood". You guys can't even stop paid articles, and you refuse to consider the potential of breakthrough technology. wikimedia has it's work cut out for it if it wants to stay on top of it's game. competitors lurk everywhere, and your place in the internet culture is not guaranteed. look at yahoo, lycos, netscape, microsoft, for examples. I assume that the reason wikimedia does not accept bitcoin is actually because top leadership hasn't put forth any effort to investigate this, and as such, low level moderators like yourself have adopted a policy of "deny by default". this policy is not in the best interests of wikimedia longterm. I would appreciate a open response at shepshep7@gmail.com

Please read my reply directly above this section. PiRSquared17 (talk) 04:57, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@PiRSquared17, "If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Moving, be like water. Still, be like a mirror. Respond like an echo. -- Bruce Lee" this would seem to suggest being open to change, instead of obstructing it. nevertheless, it is clear to me that I am talking to a wall on this issue, and my well intentioned efforts will bear no fruit. I bid you good day

I wouldn't assume that. I'll ask about this again, but I doubt the WMF will change their decision until 2014 (or later), if at all. PiRSquared17 (talk) 05:05, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

please start collecting money by bitcoin. thx

Hello. You can donate to the Wikimedia Foundation via bitpay. I don't think the WMF is going to start accepting bitcoin directly anytime soon (see wmf:FAQ/en), but I might be wrong. See also the extensive discussion above about cryptographic currencies. (Note: I am a volunteer, not a Wikimedia Foundation/WMF employee). PiRSquared17 (talk) 03:58, 14 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

I often find myself using your site. One small curiosity opens up such an interesting world of people and things I would never have known about. Thank you. I tried to donate through paypal but didn't get very far. I think there maybe a problem with your site. I will continue to try as I think what you do is fantastic. Keep up the good work, well done.

Many thanks to you all

Hello.
I'm glad you find Wikipedia or its sister sites useful.
Regarding the donation problem, have you read this page? If you continue to have trouble, try emailing donate@wikimedia.org. It might help if you include details (e.g., how far did you get, what happened).

wikimediafoundation.org - Donations

Donations - how to get more money.

At present there is no clear deadline or goal - so there is no real pressure to donate. You are more likely to receive donations if you set deadlines. Generally fundraisers show deadlines with dates & financial goals, so people can see the need to help out.

Why not do this and share this positive message - "Wiki is here to stay" (which implies it won't be if you don't do something)

We need to raise 'X' amount and we need it by 'Y' date. (This chart shows where we are in real time).

Did you know you can offset your donation against tax, which means that it will cost you nothing? (insert a clear explanation with a link to the relevant form)

Make your contribution below from 1.00 up to a maximum of 1,000,000.00 individuals, small businesses and Corporates, everyone's doing it. (The UK minimum amount suggested is £3.00 - ideally the minimum amount should be the minimum amount that covers the processing fee)

Thank you your email receipt has been sent to you.

How about something like that? In a more confident style that consumers expect (and more importantly) respect. It needs to be tailored to each country to be really effective of course. Make the donation as easy and rewarding as it can possibly be. Yours Sincerely,

A Wiki Fan.

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

Today we have many choices thanks to the Bill of Rights of the Constitution of the United States and the wonderful advances made in communications, particularly the open and free internet. We want to keep it that way so I donate. Now, that said, I would be willing to donate more and regularily if I KNEW that my money was not going to fund some organization that I was opposed to and I believe I'm not alone in that sentiment. Can you visualize a pair of independent auditing organizations whom you would open your books to who would spell out disbursements made? I do not want to support a philosophy or group which opposes the principles I believe in. I believe you attempt to take an objective approach to the subjects you define and therefore I applaud you. Would you consider offering, where appropriate, differing viewpoints from Not-professional-spokespersons so that if there is a 'spin' to the defination, a searcher can immediately access the pro/con perspectives? This would help those of us looking for a quick-look at an issue. You always provide references for more information which is splendid. This pro/con approach on appropriate subjects would put more objective information into the hands of the inquirer to let one decide for one's self as to the virtue of the issue. Case in point, ACA or Obamacare/ death panels, is berated in your article which, in later revelations made two weeks ago, Governor Palin's remarks were spot on. It appears that a Pro-Obama writer composed your article on the ACA. It appears that you allowed this to happen which seems sloppy. Hmmmph! Isn't anyone honest anymore? The emperor's new clothes come to mind. Well, keep up the good work you do, anyway. But if more objectivity is offered by another 'wiki-wannabe' I think I would be more inclined to donate to them. steve from the midwest

Hello Steve. Wikipedia articles are supposed to be neutral and represent all major views, but not give undue weight to very small views. If you believe that a particular article is biased, you can bring it up on the discussion page. Since Wikipedia allows anyone to contribute, it is possible that at any given time an article has some bias. We do not claim Wikipedia is perfect. Some corporations pay PR people to write biased articles for them, but this is obviously frowned upon and their biased articles are often deleted or cleaned up. I do not understand part of your comment -- do you think organizations are paying the Wikimedia Foundation(WMF) to have positive articles? The WMF only gets involved in content disputes when a legal issue is involved (with a few exceptions, perhaps). I think the most political thing the WMF has done was the SOPA blackout, and even that was voted on by volunteer editors. There are some websites that have pro/con lists on popular issues, e.g. [3]. I'm not sure that would work on Wikipedia, as it is not quite encyclopedic. I think it would be better to just have unbiased articles, but a short summary of the pros/cons might be good for some subjects. In any case, the WMF probably won't decide -- it could be proposed at W:WP:VPR though. PiRSquared17 (talk) 04:37, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

Seasons Greetings, I recently received the email for donation time. I have someone blocking me from using this site. I start my email site and then get blocked from it. I have tried twice to have a topic page. I got a email saying thank you for the donation of one million dollars not really knowing if true. I have the video in my you tube watched history of Peru. I have one bank that I know of Ozark Mountain Bank. I think I donated ten dollars then got blocked from the site. Sorry but something is going on that is hard to trust. If the above statement really happened I was not really aware.

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

Unfortunately your "foundation" as I see it is no more than a way for trolls to dictate what is notable or relevant as they see fit. I find that many artists and artisans are being deleted due to criteria that is fundamentally wrong. Until such time that your editor/trolls stop dictating what is notable...I will not be making any donations to your pages or anything remotely connect to it.

The deletion of artists and artisans by these people is unwarranted and ludicrous considering that mass killers are listed by name giving them advertising and the publicity they sought out in the first place. While myself and other artists like myself are deleted when our works have enlightened and touched families in a social moral and uplifting manner.

Shame on you...shame shame shame.

Show me one serial killer that has won an award such as a Gemini for outstanding Family Programming or has people THANKING them for their work and the moral messages we instilled in them or their children and I will gladly concede that we as artists are not notable.

Regarding Template:Contribute Literacy Revolution

Literacy Revolution Dear Wiki,

Since 1984, I have worked and studied in the field of literacy. 15 years ago, I developed plans for a Children's Literacy Revolution, based on the highly-successful Cuban Literacy Campaign of 1961, and accomplished some feasibility programs in New Mexico. Semi-retired, and given the reach of the internet, I now foment a Worldwide Literacy Revolution, and seek your assistance.
After the problems of food, clothing, shelter, disease and belligerent egoists making war, illiteracy is the major roadblock to creating a much better world. Literacy is a stepping-stone to solving many of those problems, and one that many, many volunteers can help their neighbors overcome. So far, institutions devoted to eradicating illiteracy in the U.S. and most other countries have not succeeded.
Therefore, I propose a Wiki page to address an ongoing Literacy Revolution, with ideas, plans and suggestions from folks around the world. Please begin such a page, let us seek feedback. Literacyrev.com/

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

I've been using Wikipedia for YEARS (as most people have.) Don't you think it's time you guys started having Ads so you don't have to rely on begging people for money to keep your servers running? You guys can set the terms for Ads, such as not allowing scripts to be run to drastically reduce (or even eliminate) the odds of getting a virus/spyware from the Ads. You can control whether or not the ads is animated or whatever else you guys want. You're wikipedia, you can set all the terms and companies would be tripping over their own feet for the opportunity to advertise on wiki. Seriously, you guys are the new PBS, begging for money once a year to handle what could easily be handled internally without looking bad in front of your users, since begging doesn't look good in any situation.

You can do what you need to do to handle your business or you can sit in the corner like a bum/vet with a cup begging people for money, your call.

Wiktionary is a project to create a multilingual free content dictionary in every language. This means each project seeks to use a particular language to define all words in all languages. It actually aims to be much more extensive than a typical dictionary, including thesauri, rhymes, translations, audio pronunciations, etymologies, and quotations. The project started in December 2002, and as of May 2013 is available in over 150 languages with over 16,000,000 entries in all. The largest language edition is English, with 3,380,000 entires. Regarding Policies

Have Bernard Peiffer added to the alphabetical list of jazz pianists. Request that my book "Compendium of Over 2000 Jazz Pianists" by Arnie Fox be listed in various Wikipedia articles that pertain to "jazz pianists" . The book was written as a labor of love and certainly not to make money since it is a very specialized subject. The book took over 3 years to compile the data base of many unknown jazz pianists which would definitely enhance the knowledge of jazz enthusiasts. Don Glanden (former student of Bernard Peiffer) wrote the foreward. He wrote a biography of Peiffer and his article is in the wikipedia. Tom Lord who has a discography of all jazz albums and CD's also lists "Compendium of Over 2000 Jazz Pianists" as a reference book on jazz. This book would fill the gap of jazz pianists that Wikipedia lists but only scratches the surface of those artists listed in your alphabetical list. Princeton University also has the book in their Library.I would like to thank Wikipedia for their continuous effort in informing the public on the subject of jazz. Thank you for your consideration. Arnie Fox

Hello Arnie.
I have added Bernard Peiffer to the list of jazz pianists. Note that you could have done this yourself! Anyone can edit Wikipedia. If you have time, you can register an account (account is optional) and read the tutorial. There is a "WikiProject" (coordination of various interested users) for jazz. You might like to join. You can add citations to that book by clicking the "edit" button, but I suggest you read the tutorial first.

We have a Jostaberry bush in our garden in the Moray coastal village of Cummingston. The bush provides an abundance of berries every year despite the leaves being desimated by catapillars early each season. We freeze the harvested fruit that is not consumed by birds but assure readers that there are many very sharp thorns protecting the fruit from wildlife, the reference above states that it is thornless!

I'm sorry, but that is original research and is not allowed on Wikipedia. See [5]. Quote: "Unlike Ribes divaricatum [North American coastal black gooseberry] and R. uvacrispa [gooseberry], R. × nidigrolaria [jostaberry] lacks thorns." If you can give a reliable source (not a blog, etc.) that says it has thorns, it can be changed. PiRSquared17 (talk) 06:16, 21 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

The article I am reading on Lizzie Borden says it was updated on January 26, 2014 when in fact I am reading that on January 25, 2014. Now I feel like I can't fully trust the information on Wikipedia if you claim the article you produced has been updated on a day before the day got here. So, what's your explanation of that?

Wikimedia, like a lot of the computer world, uses UTC as a timezone. In Louisiana, it is January 25, but in the UTC timezone (based on GMT/Greenwich Mean Time), it is January 26. Go here to see the list of edits to the page. You can edit it yourself by clicking the edit button. Hope this helps. PiRSquared17 (talk) 01:41, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

wikimediafoundation.org

You are asking money from me but cant give you feedback easily, take several minutes to find this form, excuse mua! Cant support you and give you money, so many times information has been fraudulent, otherwise false, and very serious claims in ex. (mental)healthcare, which risk human lives, and other serious subject is archeology and history false information is (possible given) to manipulate, violate and harm ex. minorities life and health. So if I would take a part of your project it would mean hunting this information day by day fixing other peoples writings and translating it. Then there would be somebody who will be angry to me and fix true to false again and then I should fix it back, that dosent work. Who decides these things, you think you are some fu...information authority. This is helpful but have to keep all time in mind that people who are writing here are not highest top in their subject, and there should be warning sing BE SELECTIVE on what you read. So I think library at university is better than yours, sorry. Library is more trustful(printing media is more selective) and its free to everybody, other than internet what cost quite of money and keeps me behind outdoor inside at home other than library : )

Thank you for your service, but i think your project is not wort of money, it is cheep to keep up internet pages, cant say where your money is going if there is volunteers writing here (who you are censoring), ask rich instead of me! Hope I support you enough.

I'm sorry that Wikipedia may appear to be very hostile that way to many people, but it is because it is not and never will be a completely indiscriminate collection of information about everything that can be, see Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not for details on this. The material there is subject to strict peer review about what is or is not acceptable as encyclopedic material according to a set of criteria, so a lot of stuff is excluded from Wikipedia even if it might exist. Perhaps you've run into some trouble fixing things people disagree with, which is also sadly a common occurrence that results in one side being blocked and leaving Wikipedia entirely. My suggestion would be to perhaps ask the relevant people advice about how best to reinstate your fix into something without causing someone else to be angry. Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

I just want to say that Wiki is great system for open information exchange. This is one basic cornerstone of democracy. Personally I have has a lot of use of Wiki, when I'm commenting blog writings and news in internet. Very often I remember things in the past "about" , but not excatly. By using Wiki I can be sure of the detailed things of which I'm commenting. Wiki is very flexible to use. In our modern internet world the superiors of our countries, traditional media, politicans and other groups of their own intrests can't govern anymore the information which is given to the people.

Thank you for your comments. If you're interested in wikis, may I suggest a look at Wikipedia's list of wikis or some practice using the software yourself by downloading MediaWiki? It's the software that's used to run these websites, written in PHP, and it can be found at www.mediawiki.org, very supportive of the wiki model. Regarding Press room - new contact for Finnish Wikipedia

Hello,

I'm a long time press contact for Finnish Wikipedia (since 2004), and I announced in the beginning of the year that I'd stop at 10 years. The successor for myself has now been selected, and Markku's contact information can be found at press contact page's subpage at the Finnish Wikipedia.

Additionally, the Wikimedia Finland has their own press contact, and I actually only informally presented them for some time. Tommi's name and phone number can be found at https://fi.wikimedia.org/wiki/Yhteystiedot

Please update wmf:Press room page accordingly - Tommi to the Wikimedia Suomi section and Markku to "Other regional contacts by language" section.

It was excellent time helping Wikimedia projects in this role during the last 10 years, and I'm happy I chose to contribute with that! --TJ (talk) 14:05, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Terms of Use

(Forgive my boldness, but) I think the summary box at the top of the ToU page should be titled "Terms of Use summary", or "Summary of the Terms of Use", instead of "Termes of Use": a blue-framed box with inside it a big blue-highlighted title saying "Terms of Use" sends the signal that said box contains the Terms of Use, which is counter-productive in relation to the couple of disclaimers trying to warn against that very idea. The same goes for the translations.

Conversely (and less importantly), there is an additional disclaimer put before the box (on the English ToU page at least), which at first I thought was talking about the entire page, instead of only the box; this is because it is separated from the box and a bit vague about its subject ("This"). With the box title modified, I believe this additional disclaimer could simply be removed. But if it has to remain, then I suggest to place it inside the box; or closer to the border of the box, if it really is to remain outside.

If I'm wrong (really possible), I'm interested in why. Thank you - Cos (talk) 02:04, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Almost :-). The lead sentence should end with "in calendar year 2014", not "in calendar year 2013." Also you've accidentally circularly categorized Category:DMCA 2014 into itself. Following the example of Category:DMCA 2013, it should be in categories [[Category:DMCA]] and [[Category:2014]]. If you are willing to go down the rabbit hole a bit, this leads to the issue that Category:2014 doesn't currently exist (but it can be created with content copied from Category:2013) and that Category:Press releases issued in 2014 doesn't currently exist (but it can be created with content copied from Category:Press releases issued in 2013). —RP88 06:53, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia image failures

Where and how do I question a problem with Wikipedia? What's wrong with a simple 'comments' or 'questions' link? Specifically, for several weeks the images (maps, graphics, photos, etc) have not been active, i.e. cannot be magnified or a larger format found (links go to a dead page with the name of an image file but no image). This was not a problem in the past……What changed? It is especially frustrating when it involves tiny text in graphics! It is not my device or software, for I use a Verizon cell phone and a Kindle Fire HD……or is it that both work on Android systems?

You can post to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Help_desk. Please include an example with the url of a page where you click an image, and the url it takes you to. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:44, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, Wikimedia Foundation does not accept bitcoins as a form of donation currently. See wmf:Bitcoin for details. Also see wmf:Ways to Give on other ways to donate to the Foundation. However, it is possible that this may change. See this article on TechCrunch. Hola,

--Anskar (talk) 19:20, 15 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Tracked in Phabricator:
Bug 1066

1. At this time a user who logs into one site is also logged into its sister sites.

2. On Wikipedia, when a user logs-in they are notified of unread messages on their talk page.

Proposal: that a method/program be developed/implemented whereby any user with multiple-site access be notified of any unread messages on their "talk" pages on ALL sister sites, regardless of which site they log-in on.

Rational: many users tend to use one or two sites on a regular basis and are involved in others rarely. When there is no immediate reason to visit a particular site, messages on that site may go unnoticed and unanswered for extended periods of time. Having a multi-site message flag with an indicator of which site the message is on would speed-up communications and promote collaborations.

Regarding Template:Contribute Wales' Quote in the Header Should be Replaced

This is a comment on the quote in the header : "Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet has free access to the sum of all human knowledge." — Jimmy Wales, Founder of Wikipedia

May I suggest that the foundation remove the statements referring to "a world in which every single person on the planet has free access to the sum of all human knowledge", since they were recently completely invalidated by Mr Wales himself.

Free access to all human knowledge is a crucially important endeavor, and I consider "the sum of all human knowledge" to be the legacy, the rightful inheritance, of all humans.

I am not an energy healer but I am an information professional and I find his stance derogatory and exclusionary, which negates the quote brandished on the home page referenced above.

Clearly Wikipedia is his baby, and he can do with it whatever it pleases, but in doing so he is contradicting himself in this and other statements of mission for which Wikipedia is known and on which it prides itself.

Specifically, Wales recently came out with a biased edict that excludes a body of knowledge that he personally, in an unsubstantiated statement, judges as non-knowledge. Unfortunately it is nothing more than simply Mr Wales' personal opinion; but being who he is, he calls the shots.

At the same time, he does not make mention of the fallacies and deliberately falsified peer-reviewed studies that are routinely exposed, published by pharmaceutical giants for the single purpose of profit; often obscene profit. Nor does he take into account the millions of deaths at the hand of conventional medicine practitioners and treatments such as chemotherapy. All this he claims or believes to be "true science" when it is not. In short, his bias is palpable.

Wales disregards a sizeable body of proven natural healing methods that include energy work. Take meditation, an age-old tradition that has been proven to heal more times than there are entries in his Wikipedia.

Instead he is splattered all over Time magazine with the following regrettable quote: "No, you have to be kidding me. Every single person who signed this petition needs to go back to check their premises and think harder about what it means to be honest, factual, truthful. Wikipedia’s policies around this kind of thing are exactly spot-on and correct. If you can get your work published in respectable scientific journals – that is to say, if you can produce evidence through replicable scientific experiments, then Wikipedia will cover it appropriately. What we won’t do is pretend that the work of lunatic charlatans is the equivalent of “true scientific discourse”. It isn’t." Wikipedia Founder Sticks it to Lunatic Holistic Healers

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

I just did a search for the word "pedagogy", and as always, Wikipedia provided a clear and fairly detailed explanation. My reason for disappointment and concern is that while Wikipedia offers this information in myriad languages, it is not offered in Urdu. Urdu is used as the primary language in Pakistan, a country approaching a population of 200 million. If Urdu speakers in India, and Kashmir are added, this number can easily be doubled to about 400 million, needless to say, a significant segment of the world population.

While it is gratifying, and impressive too so many languages that cater to much smaller populations of the world, this only makes the exclusion of Urdu even more stark.

I would like to know how languages are chosen, and how Urdu can be added to the list. Thank you.

@Khalidjsiddiqi: There is an Urdu Wikipedia: link. Maybe the particular article on pedagogy does not exist there. You can help by translating it. Regards, PiRSquared17 (talk) 11:53, 4 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
All Wikipedia language editions are written by volunteers. en:Urdu gives a lower number of speakers but there are still fewer volunteers in Urdu than in many smaller languages, and the Urdu Wikipedia only has around 35,000 articles. Internet access and spare time may be factors. You are welcome to contribute to the Urdu Wikipedia. Your account works there and you can create articles right away. https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Foundation_wiki_feedback&action=edit&section=new&editintro=Foundation_wiki_feedback/Header/Edit&preload=Foundation_wiki_feedback/preload&preloadtitle=Regarding+wikimediafoundation.org

editintro=Foundation_wiki_feedback/Header/Edit is supposed to display Foundation wiki feedback/Header/Edit at the top but that page has been moved to Template:Foundation wiki feedback header/Edit with no redirect (see [7] for how it's meant to look). I suggest to restore display of the page either here or at foundation by changing the url. It's made by wmf:MediaWiki:Permissionserrorstext-withaction which transcludes wmf:Template:Contribute.

preload=Foundation_wiki_feedback/preload preloads Foundation wiki feedback/preload in the edit box but that page has been blanked.

preloadtitle=Regarding+wikimediafoundation.org preloads the subject field with "Regarding wikimediafoundation.org", currently causing 41 identical such headings on this page. People saving a section edit or clicking the little arrow section link for an edit in the page history [8] or elsewhere (for example their own contributions to find their own section) are taken to the first of the 41 sections. The TOC works correctly by adding numbers to the anchors, but finding the right section in the TOC can be hard. I suggest encouraging more descriptive (and thereby varied) subjects with a line in Template:Foundation wiki feedback header/Edit, for example "Please write a short descriptive headline in the subject field." (it says "Subject/headline:" above the field). PrimeHunter (talk) 16:21, 4 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please respond to the signed email issued by "India Against Corruption" to WMF's office, concerning huge quantities of grossly objectionable pornographic images (including child pornography) located on WMF servers and also curated by WMF Admins.

As a result of this public disclosure, which IAC was previously privately discussing with WMF Community Teams to get removed, a Wiki lynch mob has been organised by some Wikipedia Admins to pass a community wide ban against "India Against Corruption". All of your other issues aside, if you have demonstrable evidence of child pornography, as you allege, please send it to legal-reports@wikimedia.org, so that we can take appropriate action. Do not post it publicly, please, to avoid potential legal offset issues. Philippe Beaudette, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 01:15, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As far as IAC is concerned all our issues are equally important, especially the libelous article on India Against Corruption. All pornography is equally abhorrent to us if it can be viewed or edited by minors and children. IAC is outraged that the "Delhi Gang Rape" juvenile offender's cell phone contained graphic images downloaded from Wikimedia. WMF is as well aware of the URLS of these curated galleries of child pornography on WMF servers, as IAC is, considering that these are for the most part curated and compiled by WMF administrators, and they are rarely removed because the deletion discussions revolve around copyright and not obscenity. Lets also agree the only reason WMF responded is because IAC has started some administrative processes in India and the first set of Government notices has begun reaching your local chapters, who in any case are funded by WMF because some were well known local pornographers. POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME (POCD) and RED BULL TAURINE LEVELS

Dear Wikipedia, I just want you to know that I LOVE this site and I have just donated to you to keep you adfree. You are one of the only reliable sources of information on the internet that is not GOOPED-up with ads and offers. I feel when I read something on your site that the answer can be trusted to be neutral and non partisan. I LOVE THAT ABOUT YOU! Please stay that way.

REQUEST: STUDY OF TAURINE (RED BULL) CONSUMPTION OR ABUSE IN RELATION TO POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROM~PCOS

The reason I am writing to you today is that I have been researching PCOS because my daughter has been diagnosed with it. I became aware of her lack of periods early on in life, and we have been to countless doctors in the last 10 years, non of whom have been able to help. Since this disorder is caused among other things, with the imbalance of hormones, particularly male hormones in excess in a female patient, I have been trying to figure out what might have gone wrong with my daughter. One obvious and terrifying thing comes to mind which I want to encourage Wikipedia to help with…it is the use of Taurine…particularly the use of it in energy drinks which are so popular with kids. My daughter started drinking Red Bull and other Taurine based energy drinks in early adolescence when these products first came out. Her hormonal levels are all messed up and I intuitively, and also because of research that I've been doing, predict that PCOS may have a correlation with these energy drinks that contain bull male hormone. The high levels of Taurine in Red Bull and other energy drinks, I believe may have been the cause of my daughter's current troubles. What I am asking in essence is if you are able to make this one of your projects. I think the world needs to know and it would be very beneficial to do a study of PCOS women to see how many of them used or abused Taurine products like Red Bull in adolescence. Thanks very much. Myriam Nelson miminelson2013@yahoo.ca

Dear Myriam, thank you for your passion for Wikipedia! I am sorry to hear about your daughter. I am sure anyone reading your message will share the sympathy I feel. It is very possible for you, or anyone, to improve the content of Wikipedia, and I strongly encourage you to look into ways to add well sourced, factual information about this topic to its contents. However, this page is specifically for feedback to the Wikimedia Foundation -- an entity which provides the technical infrastructure and various other resources to the Wikipedia community, but which has no editorial involvement with its content. So there is little that can be done by the audience you have chosen. I would suggest you take a look here: w:en:Help:Getting started -Pete F (talk) 22:07, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_policy doesn't even mention that a new version is being discussed and obviously doesn't encourage participation in that discussion.

The intro has incorrect grammar (is approved > has been approved) and the heading General Scope is incorrectly capitalized. --Espoo (talk) 04:17, 11 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Wikimedia Foundation site is not part of the single unified login used for the project sites. Login accounts on the Foundation site are only available to employees and a handful of volunteers so it is correct that you cannot login or self-register. That is completely unexpected and counterintuitive and should therfore of course be explained on the login page.
Where should i write my other comments to get a response to them? --Espoo (talk) 07:10, 12 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have seen them, and passed them along to the pertinent staff members. Philippe Beaudette, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 13:56, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
