Secessionism[edit]

More and more "micro-sites" are being built by WMF outside MediaWiki wikis: annual.wikimedia.org, transparency.wikimedia.org, policy.wikimedia.org etc. FWIW, it's revolting, for so many reasons that I won't even start listing them. If someone ever believed the fairy tale that WMF maintains MediaWiki, this probably disproves it forever: WMF is the first and prime boycotter of MediaWiki, now overtly. I wonder if WMF staff, now able to achieve this new kind of fiefdom, will at least reduce their selfish creation of private wikis. --Nemo 10:20, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Regarding Talk:Terms of Use[edit]

Would it be possible to add section anchors, in order to have reliable internationalised links in multilingual pages? (see mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page_translation_administration for explanations).

Jean-Fred (talk) 08:08, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

Hello, Jean-Fred. :) I'll poke legal. --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk) 13:24, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
Hello Maggie Dennis (WMF), thanks for noticing this and the poking :) Jean-Fred (talk) 00:57, 15 January 2016 (UTC)

Regarding Ways to Give[edit]

I find the translation/wording in the Dutch version off on one particular sentence. The English version of the Legacy paragraph states "a donation of any amount", while the Dutch has "een willekeurig bedrag" (a random amount)

Although I don't think a lot of people will believe the amount will be arbitrarily chosen without their approval, the two phrases don't seem interchangeable to me in this instance. Surely something along the lines of "een zelfgekozen bedrag"/"an amount of your own choosing" would be more appropriate and less ambiguous.

Also, seeing some broken link code and overly English terms ("charitatieve" instead of "liefdadigheid") I suspect the entire Dutch version could benefit from some extra attention. OmikronWeapon (talk) 14:27, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

Two absurd notices on wmf:Notices received from search engines#French Wikipedia[edit]

As it has been discussed on the French WP Village Pump ("Une perle" = "A gem", in an ironical sense), notices wmf:File:Fr7RTBF.pdf about fr:Wikipédia:Vandalisme en cours and wmf:File:Fr5RTBF.pdf about fr:Paul Arbaud are absurd, one is the French en:Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism and is archived every 4 days, and the other one is a deleted page. The form they suggest to use answers that only the owner of the web site can use it, that is the WMF. Oliv0 (talk) 07:43, 8 August 2015 (UTC)

Regarding Tax Deductibility/en[edit]

The page contains two language links to "norsk bokmål" (Norwegian; one form of the two written forms of Norwegian). They both go to the same page. I'm guessing one of those two should be deleted. /15-08-09 —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 83.209.133.24 (talk) 02:09, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

It could be a bit complicated to fix in a good way. no is Norwegian in general which has two written variants nb and nn. nb is more common. wmf:Tax Deductibility/nb redirects to wmf:Tax Deductibility/no. The redirect may help readers who manually write /nb in the url or search box. The language links are made automatically by wmf:Template:Languages which checks for existence of each language (view source), but the used function #ifexist in wmf:Template:Languages/Lang cannot see whether it's just a redirect. It sees there is both something at /nb and /no, and makes a language link for both. /no pages are apparently assumed to be written in the nb variant norsk bokmål. {{#language:no}} produces: norsk bokmål. {{#language:nb}} produces: norsk bokmål. {{#language:nn}} produces: norsk nynorsk. wikimediafoundation.org[edit]

In attempting to donate I note that 'Russia' is missing from the 'Europe' and the 'Asia' lists. And no rouble option either..though it be rubble at the moment.

I also have a suggestion that you create an 'opt for English' on any non-English-speaking-country page as I do not read or really understand Russian..though I am learning right now. And although I could cope with being mocked..as I've been here long enough to be fluent, there must be other people in my position who teach English, as I do, and who are not fluent enough to fill all the data in in their 2nd language.

Regards

Robert Green —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Monoentendre (talk) 10:57, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

Thank you Robert. Unfortunately we aren't able to accept donations from Russia at the moment.
Many of our pages have an "In other languages" section, either in the left hand sidebar (for articles) or at the top of the page (for meta pages about donations). Peter Coombe (Wikimedia Foundation) (talk) 13:48, 17 September 2015 (UTC)

Regarding Talk:Friendly space policy[edit]

It would be helpful to amend "Harassment includes but is not limited to offensive verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, physical appearance, race, ethnicity, political affiliation, or religion." to add "age". Perhaps also "sex" after "gender". Mattflaschen-WMF (talk) 04:54, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

I added "age" in this edit. Given that we already include "gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression," adding "sex" seems like overkill to me. I'd actually prefer if we could find a way to condense the wording. What about replacing "gender identity or expression" with "sex" since we already include sexual orientation and gender? --MZMcBride (talk) 05:07, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org[edit]

I was seriously wanting to donate and was entering my credit card information when I saw the following and quickly backed out. If they really want donations, they need to respect the privacy of donors.

"By donating, you agree to share your personal information with the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization that hosts Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, and its service providers pursuant to our donor policy. Wikimedia Foundation and its service providers are located in the United States and in other countries whose privacy laws may not be equivalent to your own. We do not sell or trade your information to anyone." —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 205.143.137.43 (talk) 13:39, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback, and I'm sorry to hear that you were put off. We absolutely respect your privacy, and we do not publish, sell, trade, or rent donor data. You can read more in our Donor Policy. Regarding Talk:Yasuo Satomi jp[edit]

I am looking for a rather remarkable person, living in the area of Tokyo, and named Yasuo Satomi. I believe he is about my age - cca 80 years, and has been active in the environment of design for at least 50 years (like myself). Maaany years ago I had his postal address, but it seems not to be valid anymore. At this point I can not judge whether this - or what it will lead to, would justify any account//login. However it is my conviction that we both - individually or mutually, would be able to contribute to several points in your register. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 2.108.9.218 (talk) 13:16, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

Regarding Accueil, dead links.[edit]

Links for the nine projects do not function. I suppose "subst:SUBPAGENAME" (that I find in the code of the page, on my side, in the browser) should be resolved before going on line. It doesn’t seem to make sense in a http request. --Dominique Meeùs (talk) 10:57, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

Right, wmf:Accueil transcludes wmf:Template:OurProjects/fr which works on the template page but breaks when it's transcluded. A search [1] shows this error exists in several languages. There are currently ten search hits. Some of them are not used but others cause errors, for example on these home pages for languages: wmf:首页, wmf:Κύρια Σελίδα, wmf:Приёмная, wmf:Hoofdpagina, wmf:Portada galega. The errors have been there since edits like [2] to the templates 20 February 2013. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:32, 8 September 2015 (UTC)
Okay, I believe I've fixed all these dead links. However the translated home pages still need a lot of updating. Peter Coombe (Wikimedia Foundation) (talk) 16:59, 9 November 2015 (UTC)

Regarding Talk:Wikimedia trademarks[edit]

Trademark aside, what is the copyright status of the MediaWiki logo? The Commons descriptions are conflicting. Every other logo has copyright info except this one... which is the most important, IMO, due to it be in the wiki software. 108.59.8.208 03:46, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

@Mdennis (WMF): Can you shed any light on this? Peter Coombe (Wikimedia Foundation) (talk) 19:05, 22 September 2015 (UTC)
Checking with legal, Peter. :) There's no indication what the license may be at wmf:Wikimedia trademarks. --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk) 20:19, 22 September 2015 (UTC)
Legal indicates that the logo was donated to the public domain by its creators, User:Eloquence and User:Anthere. --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk) 20:36, 22 September 2015 (UTC)
Thanks Maggie! I've added this on the wmf:Wikimedia trademarks page, and put in an edit request to correct the license at commons:File:MediaWiki-notext.svg since it's protected and I don't have admin on Commons. Peter Coombe (Wikimedia Foundation) (talk) 16:33, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
Yes we did. Anthere (talk)
I am so glad to see this longtime question resolved -- thank you all! Mdennis (WMF) Anthere Eloquence etc. It would be nice to get clarity on all the logos -- mainly because it will serve as a nice example of the WMF demonstrating permissive behavior around copyright, and not entangling the logos with more legal issues than they need. (Trademark is of course legit, but IMO there is no benefit in attaching a copyright license -- even a free one -- to a logo.) -Pete F (talk) 03:10, 15 January 2016 (UTC)

Regarding Talk:Terms of Use/pt-br[edit]

I have tried but I have not been able to edit and adjust the name of my aunt, on the main title where her name appears misspelled. That is: her name is spelled with an "y", instead of "í". The correct form is "Lygia", not "Lígia". I know this for a fact, for I am a close relative and know, as well, that this is an important matter for her, who, by the way, is completing 96 years of age, today (I have just spoken with her, congratulating her for her birthday - which she does not like, for her mother deseased on this same day, when she was already in an advanced age). So, please, do adjust her name, on the main section of her page. wikimediafoundation.org[edit]

Of course, bad things happen because, unfortunately, we live in a world where some people try to get away with imposing their will for purely commercial purposes but you have to admit that this only happens in, perhaps, 2 or 3 percent of the articles. However, it is imperative to be vigilant because that cheating can cause great damage to peoples' reputations and even to their lives. It is now (2015)in almost every city in the USA...due to the 22 annual advertisements that I set up for the first group: Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA), from 1987>1994. 15d'experiencesurlaPlanèteTerre. Talk:FAQ/fr[edit]

—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 109.218.54.60 (talk) 18:12, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

Regarding Talk:FAQ/en[edit]

The German version of the FAQ https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/FAQ/de contains much more information than the English version. Could that content not be included in the English version as well? It's useful, and gives donors a better idea what happens with their money. --Andreas JN466 14:08, 12 November 2015 (UTC)

Note though that the German FAQ is more than two years out of date! It describes 2013/2014 as the current year, and still references documents from 2011/2012 rather than their more recent equivalents. This is a live page, linked from the German "Donate now" page. Andreas JN466 14:24, 12 November 2015 (UTC)
@Jayen466: I have now updated most of the FAQ translations to link to the latest documents. As Maggie said over at Fundraising/2015-16 Fundraising ideas, we are hoping to get a new FAQ page soon. Peter Coombe (Wikimedia Foundation) (talk) 17:18, 13 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, Peter. The German page however, as of this writing, still links to documents from a few years ago, including, just based on a quick scan, the 2011/2012 annual report (in this section) and the 2012/2013 annual plan (in this section). --Andreas JN466 17:03, 14 November 2015 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for the eagle eyes. These should also be fixed now. Peter Coombe (Wikimedia Foundation) (talk) 11:10, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
Pleasure, and thanks for the fixes, Peter. There's one sentence in the German, in this section, that's ungrammatical: "Der 2015-16er Plan für postuliert Einnahmen von USD 68,2 Millionen." (The words literally mean, "The 2015-2016 plan for postulates revenue of $68.2 million"). To fix, just delete the word "für" ("for"). Also, the plan actually aims for $73.2 million rather than $68.2 million, as the $68.2 million target doesn't include the $5 million for the endowment (see footnote 5 in the annual plan). To my mind, it would make sense to use the higher figure ("USD 73,2 Millionen"). Good luck with all your work in the run-up to the fundraiser. Andreas JN466 13:26, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org[edit]

Every time (or almost every time) Wiki asks for money I'm inclined to donate a small amount say $3 but I'm unable since I'm homeless and I'm not rich. I think I did try at one stage to make a donation via cheque or money order but but it somehow did not happen may be because I was told there would be complications because I'm sending Australian money to a different country. Just letting you know I wish I could support wiki but only in a small way, $3 a mere trifle. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 59.100.237.26 (talk) 10:38, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

That's okay, of course we know that not everyone can afford to donate. Thank you so much for thinking of us all the same.
You might also like to know that a monetary donation is not the only way to support Wikipedia. Wikipedia is a wiki, which means that everyone can edit pages and contribute their knowledge. Regarding wikimediafoundation.org[edit]

Dear Wiki, I get that when someone famous dies or when a valiant steed dies, that you would post it in the honor of that person. But, why would you honor terrorists?! That is an insult to those who lost their lives of those beasts. It should be that those who died at the hands of those terrorists should be named here instead.

Wikipedia is a global project managed by tens of thousands of volunteers from around the world. Many people do not know this, but the Wikimedia Foundation does not control or edit the content of Wikipedia. There is no central editorial board; all edits are made by individual volunteer members of the Wikipedia community
Wikipedia volunteers are strongly focused on the editorial values of non-censorship, neutrality, verifiability, and what we term 'no original research.' Volunteers come from virtually all walks of life and reflect a vast number of viewpoints. All volunteers invested in the quality of Wikipedia are working collectively to build balanced, neutral articles that reflect a variety of perspectives on often complex, high-profile topics. You too can contribute to this process, by editing the articles directly or by participating in an article's talk or discussion page.

Why I will never again contribute to Wikipedia

A while ago, perhaps some months, I read something by Wikipedia taking about their new policies regarding transgendered people or I'm not sure, maybe it was the broaderLGBT community. The letter said Wikipedia would give special consideration to try to promote people in that community. When I read that, I decided never to contribute again. Organizations should never brag they will discriminate against me (straight) and then ask me for money. Forget it. Regarding wikimediafoundation.org DONATIONS[edit]

Hi, I noticed your request for donations and wanted to let you know that I won't donate anything until your moderators allow people to publish genuine and unique content for mature and widely used software.

I produce a free plugin for Arduino used by thousands of people, provide a forum for support and professional documentation. Have I been allowed to create a page on wikimedia? NO, because someone unconnected to me needs to create the page.

Huh! So if I pay someone to create the page for me that's fine but then I shall need to charge for the product. Come on wikimedia! This means that whenever I read any article on your site I wonder which well funded spamming organization has been allowed to create an article.

I am not a spammer and I have proven many times to your moderators that my product is unique and professionally delivered to a wide audience. So what else is missing from this overly censored site? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 62.49.206.42 (talk) 14:29, 10 December 2015 (UTC)

Why not sell hard copies of annual, or at least semi-regular editions of a physical Wikipedia encyclopedia, and use that as a way to raise funds, instead of having regular fundraisers, or as a subsistence substitute? wikimediafoundation.org--suggestion about donation process[edit]

I just donated to Wikimedia / Wikipedia. At the end of the donation process, I completed the survey. A couple sections of the survey asked for feedback. In one section I did not have a suggestion, but now I have thought of one. I have always been curious about the average donation for various organizations that provide a service to me. The average was provided. It would also be interesting to know and help gauge my donation level if I knew the average donation relative to income range, and maybe relative to estimated usage. It would be nice if public radio and public television would do this too.

Thanks for keeping this amazing enterprise going.

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org[edit]

Hi Wikepedia,

I would be happy to donate to your public service foundation if you truly were independent and unbiased. Unfortunately, you are neither. You routinely label any information which is remotely conservative as being suspect, using terms such as controversial, right-wing, conspiratorial, etc. But you do not do that for any item which has a more liberal perspective, instead, you treat those as mainstream and the norm (since obviously they agree with your perspective.). So until you decide to be a professional and truly informational site, devoid of emotional additives and letting each subject item speak for itself (so readers can decide for themselves) I cannot contribute to a biased website that openly discriminates toward politically incorrect positions. Wikipedia is simply another mainstream media mouthpiece. I hope this will improve as time goes on, in which case I would be able to contribute in the future. Thank you!

Hi! I´m a spanish wikipedian and while reading the Wikimedia FAQ in Spanish (https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/FAQ/es)I noticed some grammatical mistakes or mistraslations:

It is necessary to change:

  • "proyectos-hemano" by "proyectos hermanos"
  • "estrategicas" by "estratégicas"
  • "leectores" by "lectores" (three times)
  • "intelegentes" by "inteligentes"
  • "mobil" by "móvil"
  • "intelientes" by "inteligentes"
  • "desiciones" by "decisiones" (twice)
  • "traqbajar" by "trabajar"
  • "relacioinada" by "relacionada"
  • " ses bas prioritariamente en donations" by "se basa principalmente en donaciones"
  • "l estatos" by ¿status?

Thanks a lot!

Wow! Very good job! I´m really thankful!!!!!
In Spanish "Fundación" has female gender so I would say "...no está afiliada..."
It is necessary to change:
  • "poryectos" by "proyectos",
  • "Necesitamos asegurarse" by "Necesitamos asegurarnos",
  • correct the link to Wikipedia Zero,

May you please unblock the article Jie-Shen Li in Wikimedia? Put Y if yes. Put N if no. You choose if you want to put Y or N, but I would think you should put Y. Here you choose. You choose here.

I think you may be misunderstanding the purpose of wikimediafoundation.org. That web site is the corporate site of the organization that runs Wikipedia; it is not an online encyclopedia itself. I believe there is no reason a page on Jie-Shen Li should exist there (unless there is a different Jie-Shen Li from the one I found through a Yahoo search who, for instance, works for the Wikimedia Foundation). -Pete F (talk) 23:07, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org[edit]

I believe a standard safety policy would be in the benefit of Wikipedia AND Wikimedia. Remember : Wikipedia or Wikimedia is not ment to condone violence, but only historical facts which were right at that moment. Even as there are claims as "we do not garantee failures" in some countries these claims are invalid. You see if you are starting or even editing an article but the info you sent and is available for the whole world to see this does not mean you have no responsability or behave like God. I would like this to be added to Wikipedia. To prevent it to be used by criminals who do not care about human life in other religions for example. There should be introduced a special lock on such pages, to prevent wrong information in a widely spread succesfull encyclopedia. Just look up Salafism (for example) and compare Christianity 1400 years ago ? We should be very carefull even on a encyclopedic super initiative ! We embrace life and want to enjoy it together, not destroy it

Regarding Talk:Press releases/Kelly Battles and Arnnon Geshuri join Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees[edit]

So, at the bottom of the press release, it says that "Every month roughly 75,000 people edit Wikipedia". This is probably an error, given that last month 115,000 registered users have edited the English Wikipedia alone in the past month...

(Also, someone should probably fix the link to the feedback page so that it doesn't include the "Talk:" bits. --Yair rand (talk) 19:59, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

"Vote:" vs. "Resolution:" pseudo-namespaces on Foundation Wiki[edit]

Hi, I'm not sure where to seek guidance on this. It's a good example, though, of the less-than-diligent curation of the Foundation wiki, which is under discussion at the Wikimedia Foundation transparency gap.

Many pages, e.g. wmf:Vote:Movement accountability standards, use the prefix "Vote:", while others (more of them, I believe, at least in recent history) use the prefix "Resolution:"

Is there any actual difference? Any reason I shouldn't rename all those starting with "Vote:" to "Resolution:"? (And while we're at it -- shouldn't this be an actual namespace, so it could be more easily searchable on its own?) -Pete F (talk) 19:23, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Pinging Slaporte (WMF) and KFrancis (WMF), two staff who have recently created both "Resolution:" and "Vote:" pages. Is there a meaningful distinction that should be preserved here? If so, maybe there's a good way to document it (e.g. in the category tree)? -Pete F (talk) 03:41, 15 January 2016 (UTC)
Re-pinging Slaporte (WMF) and KFrancis (WMF) -- can you speak to whether there is an actual difference in things recorded as a "Vote:" vs. a "Resolution:" ? -Pete F (talk) 06:26, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
Hi Pete, decisions starting with "Resolution:" and "Vote:" are both actions of the Board of Trustees. Now, the Board normally only uses "Vote:" for approving minutes, and other actions start with "Resolution:". I'd prefer to keep the pages the way they are on the Foundation wiki to preserve a consistent historical record, though. I can also look into making these a real namesapce, if that makes it easier to use, and see if there is a reason to continue using "Vote:" to approve minutes in the future. Regarding wikimediafoundation.org[edit]

I had enjoyed Wikipedia since its inception. However it has recently become a tool for long winded self publicical auto biographies. Instead of accurate information and positive contributions it is as though all content is written by individuals publicists.More akin to garbage like Ok magazine. Everything the subject does not want included is totally ignored, especially age. It has on one hand diluted expected information and replaced this with long winded self congratuistal drivel. A clean up is desirable. Kind regards Roland Dekker

Hi Lokal Profil. If you can make a list of the associations and let me know what exact text should appear in the infoboxes, I can probably make this change. --MZMcBride (talk) 16:56, 11 February 2016 (UTC)

Regarding Talk:Cookie statement[edit]

The table is missing many cookies. Also the bit about third party cookies is extremely misleading. I do not think it is proper to redefine the term third party cookie to something other then its usual technical definition, and then claim we don't use third party cookies because of a subtle definition change. Bawolff (talk) 19:04, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

Thank you Bawolff. I don't know the technical ins-and-outs of this, but it sounds like something that should be documented somewhere that it won't just be archived due to lack of response. Perhaps a phabricator ticket? -Pete F (talk) 06:23, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
Looking at wmf:Special:ListUsers/BWolff (WMF), Brian has a staff account and can update this page himself, I believe. Bawolff: if you want a volunteer account, we can also make one of those for you. --MZMcBride (talk) 16:53, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
hmm interesting. I didnt even realize I had a staff account on that wiki. However, the cookie statement seems like a very "legal" document. Im unclear if its considered socially acceptable for me to make edits to it. (Not to mention complaining is easier than fixing ;) Bawolff (talk) 19:53, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
Bawolff, Welcome to the uncertainty that all of us with accounts there feel :) Comments and complaints here routinely disappear into the archive with no response whatsoever -- even when staff are pinged directly. Seems like an issue that software like Phabricator was designed, in part, to address. I'm starting to wonder if a general move of this page to a better tool might be worthwhile. Thoughts? -Pete F (talk) 22:51, 11 February 2016 (UTC)

Regarding User talk:Mdennis[edit]

Some consider EDL Islamaphobic, some consider it to be patriotic. That's the real truth. Let people decide. Don't edit the truth.

Regarding Talk:Terms of Use/es[edit]

In the page [3], in "7. Licencia del contenido" the terms "reuso" and "reusar" are wrong Spanish (false friends). There should be used "reutilización" and "reutilizar". Thank you, --PePeEfe (talk) 11:31, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

Hola. Puedes confirmar que está bien ahora? [4] Tambien, se debe usar "reutilizadores"? No me suena bien, pero... Killiondude (talk) 17:54, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org[edit]

Dear Wikipedia, I have observed that the Roman Catholic denomination is mentioned as Catholic. This is incorrect as Catholic means universal, which by no means is the case. Please refer to the denomination by the correct name "Roman Catholic" Samuel Suchitta
