Foundation wiki feedback/Archive/2013

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Ľļtitiofiovjfjkfofnk This is a suggestion for (adding) a hyper-link to the web page Terms of Use -- that is, I mean http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Terms_of_Use .

I noticed that, in section "7", there ("Licensing_of_Content") [1], in sub-section "g", "Re-use:", the first sentence mentions "content contributed under "fair use" or similar exemptions under copyright law.". That part contains the quoted phrase "fair use".

My suggestion is that the quoted phrase "fair use" there, should be (or 'have') a w:hyper-link to the English Wikipedia article Fair use -- that is, to the web page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use .

I almost started to "edit" the page myself (by force of habit!) before I realized that it does not work like a typical Wikipedia article page -- (hence this [feedback] "comment").

Terms of use/cs updated and ready

Could somebody please publish the updated (a missing word added) Terms of use/cs to foundation:Terms of use/cs? (And, possibly, check the wikisyntax, as the current version has broken formatting of the list in section 7. Licencování obsahu.) (I am not sure if there is an automated process working somewhere, or I need to make a request somewhere.) Thanks. --Mormegil (cs) 22:30, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

It's updated. Thank you. I would love it if we had some system that would notify somebody (even me!) when translations are updated, but unfortunately I don't think we have that function yet. :/ Making a request here is probably your best call at this point. :) --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk) 15:15, 30 January 2013 (UTC)
Watchlist and enable email on watchlist in prefs? Hello71 (talk) 21:52, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

I wonder if disallowing Commercial use for images; eg: CC-BY-NC-SA would encourage more professional photographers to put up their work, especially hi-res images. I'm a contributor and I'll continue to be here, but I'd feel a lot better if Wikimedia encouraged those making commercial use, to share their earnings with the original artists. It makes free art sustainable for folks like me and generally creates an environment of goodwill amongst artists and commercial publishers.

Sumeetmoghe (talk) 06:53, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi Sumeetmoghe, I used to think the same thing -- in fact, I wrote a blog post about it a while back that sparked some really interesting discussion. (The comments from Greg Maxwell and Peter Tillman are particularly illuminating.)
The biggest problem with the "NC" provision, in my view, is that it defeats the main value of a general license: establishing clear intent. There are so many ways the word "commercial" can be interpreted that, in practice, a would-be reuser of an "NC"-tagged photo often has to check with the photographer to determine whether or not the use is considered commercial…in which case, why even bother with a general license to begin with? One of the main purposes of using these licenses is to reduce the kind of friction that can bog down a collaborative project.
That part is just my opinion, I suppose. You can see the WMF's board-approved policy here: foundation:Resolution:Licensing policy You also might be interested in this reflection on the "NC" provision: freedomdefined.org/NC Hope this helps! -Pete F (talk) 20:41, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Hello. In Wikimedia Foundation: Términos y condiciones de uso & View source for Terms of Use/es here and here the Creative Commons licenses says: «Licencia Creative Commons Attribution-Compartir Igual 3.0 Sin Portar». It should be: «Licencia Creative Commons Atribución-CompartirIgual 3.0 Unported». Check it in: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/?lang=es. Thanks. --Gusama Romero (talk) 09:04, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi Vogone, I've been managing translations this year for a number of different pages on Meta and we've opted to no longer use that old system and instead use the Translate extension. I've not been able to get around to re-doing translations for Foundation wiki, but would you like to help out in organising these translations using that interface instead of the older one? I just got Email from Wikipedia <donate@wikimedia.org> to my PayPal Email! I don't like that at all. I B<DO NOT> want wiki poking around my personal Email addresses, etc. Just because I used PayPal to donate B<DOES NOT> mean that I have given permission for wiki to I<scrape> or I<save> the B<PayPal Login ID> that I used. If this ever happens again, that's the end to my donations. 19:10, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi there, I apologize if this upset you in any way. When making a donation, we generally ask for name, address, and email, depending on your chosen payment method. We use this information to send a tax receipt/donation confirmation as well as update you on any fundraising-related activities. Generally we send 2-3 emails per calendar year. As stated in our donor privacy policy, we don't rent, sell, trade, or share this information. We also offer an opt-out option at the bottom of all email messages, and I'd invite you to take advantage of this. If you have any other fundraising questions, the team can be reached at donate@wikimedia.org. Thank you again for your continuing support! Best, Jvandavier (talk) 23:58, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

Accept Bitcoin donations. It is easy.

Many will donate, including me. 01:49, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Have you read wmf:Answers archive/November 2011#Finance: Why does the Wikimedia Foundation not currently accept Bitcoin?? Perhaps this question/answer is worth an entry in the FAQ page. --MZMcBride (talk) 01:25, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

I can't add changes to the FAQ on donations, how come ?

Anyway, if someone reads, I don't see any info regarding detailed expenses and where the offices of wikipedia are held. 40+ million dollars on the whole of wikipedia with 20% spent on 140 employees sounds like a lot of money being spent on them. Seriously now, what's up with that ? I also have not seen anything related to remote work. Most wikipedia "jobs" could be remote jobs like UI Designer, software engineers, community advocate. Or does wikipedia not know how to hire the best people for the lowest costs ? 23:59, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

But if you think of that, 20% of $40 million = $8 million. That divided by 140 employees averages to about $57k - I would consider that reasonable. I know nothing about remote work's extent but I know that at least some system administrators do so.--Jasper Deng (talk) 02:49, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for your comments. The Wikimedia Foundation website at wikimediafoundation.org is locked to public editing because of security concerns. You can suggest specific changes on this page. The Wikimedia Foundation offices are located in San Francisco, California, United States (more location info is here). The Foundation does hire contractors and remote employees, although for the purpose of collaboration, it is simplest to maintain a workforce in one central location. In the United States, San Francisco is a popular location for technology-related industry and the Wikimedia Foundation pays its employees competitive wages. You may be interested in reading this rather extensive community discussion on that subject.  ono  02:51, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

WMF BoT pages

User:Mhalprin is out of date. It should indicate that he is no longer a board member per wmf:Former Board of Trustees members.

Could we add a link at the beginning of wmf:Board of Trustees#Bishakha Datta to en:Bishakha Datta or User:Bishdatta or wmf:User:Bishdatta, as all other entries start with a link to either a user or wikipedia page.

Also could we add the username of Arne Klempert to wmf:Former_Board_of_Trustees_members#Arne_Klempert for the sake of consistency and transparency (and perhaps not link to his personal portal website as the first link). --John Vandenberg (talk) 01:16, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

I just want to comment that after responding to the call for a donation (thanks for not using advertizing!) I was directed away from my search result. I'd rather ended up back where I had left.. 16:06, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry to hear that our website seems to have malfunctioned. However, I don't think anybody else has reported this same error, so could you explain what you did before you were msidirected? Thanks! AGK [•] 22:44, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

I would be more than happy to contribute financially - it's only that wikipedia has adopted an ideological stand about the use of useful neologisms such as "consumocracy" - and destroyed a whole page on this fascinating issue! 16:11, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your interest in Wikipedia, and for being willing to donate. However, Wikipedia is a "wiki", which means that everyone can edit pages—including you. You don't need to apply or get special permission to join us. At the top of each page is an "edit" label. Try it for example at <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sandbox>, a practice area where you can make changes. You don't even need to log in to edit, although creating an account gives you more options and helps you keep track of your contributions. You can create an account at <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:UserLogin/signup>. There is no central editorial board that decides the content of articles (including the article concerning "consumocracy"); all edits are made by individual members of the Wikipedia community. Wikipedia is a work in progress, and some of our pages will occasionally fall below the standard our readers have come to expect; for this, we can only apologise and invite you to fix the article yourself! Best wishes, AGK [•] 22:41, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Jack Would (talk) 09:51, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi there. I'm afraid I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to do. If you are trying to log into the Wikimedia Foundation website at [7], you will be unable to do so because that website is not open to public editing. If you are trying to log in to your account on Wikipedia or one of the other Wikimedia Foundation projects, please select the project you wish to create an account on from this list, open the project website, and click the "log in / sign up" link on that website. Hope this helps! AGK [•] 22:36, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

The trademark policy describes the font as "Hoefler Text". This is no longer correct. The font is now Linux Libertine.

Pokajanje (talk) 22:18, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi there, and thanks for your comment. However, we are unable to update that page because it contains a Board policy that can only be changed if the Wikimedia Foundation's Board of Trustees votes to do so. The correction should be made when (or if) the Board updates or replaces their policy. If it's any consolation, the error is a very small one that should not affect our users too much; and if I may say so, you did very well to spot the error at all! Thanks again, AGK [•] 22:34, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
I've passed this on to one of the lawyers at the WMF to figure out whether/how to update that resolution. Philippe (WMF) (talk) 09:31, 17 March 2013 (UTC)

There's a mistake in the translation. "Katso, kommenttiasi." means "Look, at your comment" and the link points to a page that shows donation history. 07:24, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi. I'm not sure what the mistake in the translation is. Can you be more explicit, please?
The link is pointing to wmf:Special:ContributionHistory/fi, it looks like. I believe ContributionHistory got merged into FundraiserStatistics, but I don't really remember. It should probably just have the link removed. --MZMcBride (talk) 22:54, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
It is definitely wrong. The is no "Thank you for your donation" line at all, but it really says "Look, at your comment." And the Fundraiser Statistics page no longer shows the year 2012 nor does it show the year 2013. I donated money in 2012 and got this message as a response. Here's looking at you, kid. Please point me to the translatable page on Meta so it can be corrected for the year 2014 at least. And please publish the Statistics. --Pxos (talk) 01:23, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
And it is impossible to find the page where WMF pages have been imported. I cannot edit the WMF page and I cannot find the source page. I usually do not correct mistakes in translations because I spend half an hour searching the source page and get tired and go away. --Pxos (talk) 01:33, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
On wmf:Thank You/fi, if you look at the source code, you will see:
| comments-text = Katso, kommenttiasi. Tämän jälkeen lue siitä, miksi muut lahjoittajat ympäri maailman tukevat Wikipediaa myös tai katso jos yritykselläsi olisi yhteistyöohjelma.
Would you like that to be changed, and why? πr2 (t • c) 02:07, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
There is no source code available to normal people. Try logging out and viewing the page. Some parts of source code can be deciphered from the page history. I have now found the source pages on Meta. The source is here: Fundraising 2009/supplementary messages/fi. The WMF thank you page uses the section four of the Thank You message for some reason. The same problem exists for the Norwegian version as well. --Pxos (talk) 02:14, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I would like that to be changed because it is wrong. If you want to know how it should be changed, where can I post the suggested changes? Should there be a link to the Statistics where there used be information on 2012 but which has been subsequently removed, or should the link be removed altogether? The quick fix would be to remove the first sentence and replace it with "Kiitos lahjoituksestasi!". --Pxos (talk) 02:22, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure you can see the source. I wasn't logged in either. ;) Just click on "Suggest a change" and scroll down. Alternatively, [8] makes it easier to see (hiding the "suggest a change" box). Also, you can download/view the raw source on [9] or [10], but I digress. Can you please say exactly what you'd like changed again? I'm a bit confused. πr2 (t • c) 02:22, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
I see you've added the instructions while I was editing. Shall I fix it? πr2 (t • c) 02:24, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the fix. I can view the source now as the Meta-induced blood pressure has come down and my vision is not clouded by frustration. The main problem with the translation seems to be that the main part of English text are changed every year, and so much material should be translated to other languages. Some basic messages should stay the same so that not everything required updating, translating and stuff. Even English is better than outdated translations. --Pxos (talk) 02:38, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

Good day!

I'm from Russia, and, unfortunately, my English skills are horrible. I will write in Russian and duplicate text, translated by Google Translate. I and my family have long read and love Wikipedia. And every time we see a request for a donation - we are ready to do it, because then stored truly fundamental and great knowledge. BUT! In Russia, almost everyone has a cell phone with which it can immediately send a paid sms and so make a donation. But the scope of payment through electronic money (e-mail account / purse) is not highly developed. With regards to credit cards - people are afraid of elementary and do not like the internet to enter personal data, fearing the routine work of this information. Talk about 100% security can be any number, but that's our mentality. For all these reasons, I (we) ask yet implemented for Russian citizens, readers Wikipedia, can make mobile donations via mobile account. Believe me, this is (probably) will be more effective. For himself and his friends swear :) Thank you for your attention, and for the great work you are doing. This is priceless.

Hi. We have wmf:Mobile Giving for people in the United States of America. Unfortunately, I don't believe there's currently any equivalent page for Russia. :-( --MZMcBride (talk) 20:02, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi there!

I'd like to propose that at the message where you invite to donate for Wikipedia, you insert an encounter of money needed / money collected. I think it'd adiitionally reflect thу principles of Wiki such as clarity, faithfulness and actuality, and might raise donations.

Hi there. The donations page is as minimalist as possible, but the FAQs (linked from the donations landing page) do answer the question "How much money are you hoping to raise?". I think any donor who was interested in the target for our fundraiser could find that page quite easily. As for the total amount of money collected, I can't think of a way for us to display that information; a very up-to-date total is only, I think, kept during a fundraising drive. Thanks for your comments, AGK [•] 10:57, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for your interest in supporting the Wikimedia Foundation. At this time, the Foundation can accept donations by credit card, PayPal, checks, bank transfers, or Moneybookers, as listed on our ways to give page. With potential donors worldwide, we realise that some may be unable to use these donation methods, and we are looking to expand our options in the future. AGK [•] 10:51, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Halfway the text there is this phrase: "The Teahouse help new editors become accustomed ..." I'm not a native speaker but shouldn't is be 'helps' (with an 's')?

I'm glad I could make a donation. I belief that the value of wikipedia is beyond imagination. It's not only a tremendous source of information but it's also a perfect example of what can be achieved when people work together.

Thank you (all ;-)!

I think the British use the singular when referring to organizations/companies and the like. I've fixed it since, I believe, we use American spelling and conventions on the site. Or it could just be a typo. Anyhow, it's gone! Thanks for the tip. Killiondude (talk) 22:12, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi. This page is for discussing content on the Wikimedia Foundation Wiki (see). It sounds like you're probably asking a question about content on Wikipedia in one of its many languages. I'm afraid we can't help with that here. You can try asking at the talk page of the article itself on whichever project it exists - they are edited just like this one - or you might write to info(_AT_)wikimedia.org, which is run by volunteers who are experienced editors. If you write them, please give a link to the article. If English is not your first language, you can in most cases write in your native tongue and receive a response from a volunteer who speaks it. --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk) 15:05, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Could you correct the difference beetween Foundation:Conditions_d'utilisation#7._Licences_applicables_au_contenu and Foundation:Terms_of_Use#7._Licensing_of_Content ? There is a big different on numbering of sections (a, b, c, d,). In Foundation:Conditions_d'utilisation#7._Licences_applicables_au_contenu, the section b is empty !

I wonder, if the non-essential legal claims, complaints, and amicus curiae letters should really be addressed to Rory? Would it be contrary to the non-humorous principle that all matters are dealt with promptly and with proper disregard? If he does not take care, someone will eventually question his copyright status or defend a stuffed animal's right to appear in a picture. Hats off for WMF! --Pxos (talk) 00:08, 20 April 2013 (UTC)

Killiondude (talk) 18:44, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

uk ns8 mistakes, localization of sidebar etc.

Hi. This message does have something strange: foundation:MediaWiki:Contactus/uk, the sidebar almost not localized to Ukrainian - it should be (if I have the access I can do it). But some language selector should be used there as it is at the top of this wiki, wd that is seeable for anons too. If I go to [11] then I see Головна сторінка (Main page in Ukrainian) and link is to Головна сторінка too that is not exists - or link should be fixed (not for Ukrainian only sure) or some localizations of Main page (Home) should be done (The best is to enable Extention:Translate and make getting access easier). So fix all the things I asked please and say is localization of the interface there (other translations AFAIK should be done here but now they are outdated too) a good reason to ask the access or no. --Base (talk) 19:24, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

Ads allegedly covering the text of articles

I am sure that the advertising helps to defray a lot of expenses. However, the ads now COVER the text of the articles and are so obnoxious that they cannot be made to disappear so that we can read the articles. This makes the main presentation of the website unusable. The preceding unsigned comment was added by (talk • contribs) .

Can you please provide a screenshot of what you're describing? --MZMcBride (talk) 02:07, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
I can assure you that Wikipedia doesn't have ads, and has no intention of ever putting ads on the site.
I believe what you're seeing is due to a piece of software accidentally installed on your computer. There are a number of web browser plugins which insert advertisements into Wikipedia pages. Most of these are malicious - they pretend to be something else (such as a search bar, download manager, etc.), and once installed, they force ads into pages you're reading.
This sort of thing seems to be on the rise - we've had a few cases reported to us over the past few months - but unfortunately there's not much we can do to stop them. We can, however, advise you on how to remove it!
If you look in your web browser's preferences or settings menu, there should be a section titled "extensions" or "plugins" or "addons" - you can individually remove or disable plugins from here. The plugins go by a variety of names; look for any you don't remember installing, or which don't seem to come from a trusted source, and remove these - then restart the browser and see if the ads are gone.
For more information, please see <https://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/05/14/ads-on-wikipedia-your-computer-infected-malware>. --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk)
Err, Wikipedia regularly has advertisements (for Wikimania, for elections, etc.). :-) Without a screenshot or further information, it's really difficult to diagnose what's going on here, though I agree with your suspicion that this may be malware. That was my first thought as well, I was just worried about causing a false panic. --MZMcBride (talk) 15:42, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Several (at least 3) broken links in the chapter on copyright violation, using ":en:Wikipedia:Wikipedia:..." instead of ":en:Wikipedia:...". And they are not red but blue links, even if the page is not created.

I could have corrected them if it had not been protected, but maybe it's better not to let anybody do anything on these pages.

Typo in Annual Plan Q&A

At this section of the 2011-12 Annual Plan Q&A page [12] the first sentence is "The total operating budget for the 2010-11 annual plan calls for $28.3 million in spending." It should say 2011-12 rather than 2010-11. That's all... Gnuish (talk) 00:40, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Terms of Use - translation in Italian

Hi! I speak 'n write reasonable, so not perfect, English, but.... very good Italian, being Italian myself!... In the "Terms of use" last section in Italian "Grazie!" (= "Thank You!") a better translation in Italian of "education and information" would be "ISTRUZIONE e informazione", rather than, as at the present, "informazioni ed educazione". This because:

  1. As in the original text, "education" should, and can, remain in its original first place;
  2. Unless the lazy, and bad, habit of the last years of many people of "Italianizing" english or american words, the right translation of "education" in this case is NOT "good manners": THAT is mostly the meaning of "educazione" in Italian!
  3. We ALSO use in Italian the singular "informazione" as "the fact of being informed", or "the combination, the set of informations" (as in the phrases "l'informazione", "i mezzi d'informazione" and the even not perfect "fare informazione") so there's no need in this case to make it plural ("informazioni").

All this, for a better meaning and understanding of what was originally written. Ciao! Sergio-Milan 11:29, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

Hmm, it looks like there's an issue with wmf:Template:Video-content, but that is only used for Inside Wikimedia and it's subpages. Given that the video is so old (December 2008) - perhaps we could just delete the page instead? Thehelpfulone 12:51, 2 July 2013 (UTC)
I decided to redirect the pages to the wmf:FAQ pages for now, using an appropriate language sub page where available, otherwise defaulting to English. Thehelpfulone 13:20, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

Regarding Wikipedia Zero and Mobile partnerships... I made a map :-)

Wikipedia Zero for all languages (blue) and some languages (green)

I made a map of where Wikipedia Zero is active seperated into those countries where it's available for all languages and those where it's only available in some languages. I thought it might be usefull. --U5K0 (talk) 09:36, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

Added to both. I would appreciate it if someone on the Zero team could check it, or move the images to a better location. PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:22, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
I like it a lot. One suggestion -- rather than color coding for all languages vs some, I think it's more useful to code the countries by version of Wikipedia Zero. This is the core distinction between partners in fact. There are two variants, partners that offer 1) M or M&Z, or 2) Just Z. For reference, M=m.wikipedia (full mobile version), Z=zero.wikipedia (text-only version). Akapoor (WMF) (talk) 15:09, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

Under Dutch tax law donations are also deductible.

To see the foundation's registration, search on: http://www.belastingdienst.nl/rekenhulpen/giften/anbi_zoeken/ Or a direct link to the search result (unfortunately without a proper domain name, so it looks a bit shady):

If desired, I could write a short Dutch text describing the situation for people wanting to donate in the Netherlands.

I think a Dutch passage would fit into that page more than an English one, as all the others are written in the country's main language. But can anyone else check this? PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:16, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

I agree, but I don't understand why we have two separate versions in the first place, so I asked on Commons. Do people still want the old non-Wikivoyage, non-Wikidata one? a way to improve language preferences~

Hi thanks for your help on creating this awesome website!!! I love you guys.

I have one idea that will surely help certain people reading the webpages.

As you know I am a Chinese reader and for different Chinese people from different places we have different format of characters; I notice there are usually four ways of displaying the same website for the convenience of different Chinese people and we can choose the most convenient format we like, which is good. The only problem is that every time I click a link within the articles that leads me to a new page I will have to re-select the format of characters again. Since I read wikipedia pages A LOT, this selection process wastes quite some time of mine. My suggestion is that maybe wikipedia can remember my choice of language preferences and stay like that for my reading; in that case I will not have to spend as much time selecting languages as I do now.

Thanks again, god bless you, and I will keep donating money to make you better! : )

Best wishes,

Hello! Thank you for your support of Wikimedia's mission. :-) I think I have a solution to your zh.wikipedia.org (Chinese WIkipedia) problem, but I'll also ask a native Chinese volunteer: if you zh:Special:CreateAccount, then you can set your preferred variant (zh-TW, zh-HK, etc.) in your preferences page. There may be a way to do this without creating an account as well, but I couldn't find it. (Disclaimer: I don't represent the Wikimedia Foundation in any way. I am a volunteer contributor.) Cheers, PiRSquared17 (talk) 01:27, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
Yes, like what PiRSquared17 pointed out, it is best to create an account on Wikipedia and set the language preferences in Special:Preferences. This way, your language variant will be remembered and the content will be served in that variant accordingly. --Hydriz (talk) 02:46, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

Hello I find wikipedia very useful indeed, I'd like it to keep going. However, donating to keep it alive for everyone (including non-donors) does not seem fair. I would gladly donate money in exchange for a special privilege (wikipedia related) different from that of non-donors. it could be the simplest thing, but it would make a difference. Sincerely Omar Jimenez. architect_ok(_AT_)hotmail.com

What do you consider as a special privilege? Do you want the WMF to restrict some special content and make it visible to donors only? That wouldn't be donations then, anymore … Vogone talk 15:40, 26 July 2013 (UTC)

Thank you very much. We are so pleased that you have found the Wikimedia projects useful. AGK [•] 23:00, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

It's a shame that the wikimediafoundation.org website is completely closed access, and I would say, contrary to the spirit of the movement, and open discussion.

It would be easy enough to protect pages where required.

Spam according to who? The criteria for notability by wiki editors is biased and not at all in keeping with the spirit of Wikipedia.

I'd like to know what the WMF thought a 'public place' and a 'private place' were when this resolution was adopted. There are some very counterintuitive definitions being floated around. --Elvey (talk) 21:08, 10 August 2013 (UTC)

I think it would be really nice if the foundation would add Gender Identity and Gender Expression to the list so that transgendered people are included in this clause.

In practice, I think they are already included (orientation/gender), but the WMF might want to add this to clarify. I don't feel like I should do this without board/staff approval, so I'll let one of them reply. PiRSquared17 (talk) 02:56, 25 September 2013 (UTC)
This is a general gross misunderstanding, and the lack of Gender Identity and Gender Expression has resulted in legal discrimination (not at WP, but elsewhere) despite discrimination of Gender being prohibited.

File:S-3A VS-29 with Tupolev Tu-95 1979

The information provided for this picture is incorrect. This picture was taken during the Kitty Hawk cruise in 1981.

The VS-29 S-3A pictured is being flown by LCDR A. MCMAHON. During the previous cycle, I was flying the S-3A that identified the TU-95 inbound to the USS Kitty Hawk battle group. The COTAC with me on this flight was LT Kenny Edwards.

With the limited ESM equipment on board the S-3A, LT Edwards was able to detect and discriminate the electromagnetic data specific to the TU-95. The astonishing fact is that he did so before the EA-6B airborne during that cycle. It was the following cycle when LCDR MCMAHON took advantage of the photo shoot, which rendered this picture.

One of the F-14s took advantage of the photo shoot, as well. There were two squadrons on board the Kitty Hawk: VF-11 and VF-51. I can't remember the pilot's name. Unknown to just about every person on board the ship, this F-14 pilot spoke fluent Russian. He initiated a conversation with the Russian crew, which precipitated a thorough debrief upon his return to the ship.

Last, one of the Russian crew members had fun showing Playboy center folds to the various crew members taking advantage of the photo op. It was at that point and time I realized Russian aircrews were no different then us.

Regarding Terms of Use

Dear Sirs: You need to contact the current NV Assembly in Carson, NV. I am the current Governor of NV; HRH QUEEN and Admiral from the Pentagon that has taken over NV since 2008. I am HRH Mary Jane Strickland; it is on my passport and D/L from NV, USA since I bought a new d/l in 2010. The nature of the changes are because of land mass sinking on the eastern sea board and now western sea board; and the surrender of President Obama to an oriental nation that doesn't have the power to take over what I own and control per the Articles of Confederation back in 1770s and earlier.

I am trying to get any info off your site about Sandovals; they were taken to court 2012 again about the issues: Brian Sandoval never ran for Governor in NV. You can't put him as that office or title. Second Martin Sandoval whom did run; went to IL and became a Senator. I was pulled up when there was a death of Judge Stringfield whom became an assumed Governor for a short time instead of Brian or Martin Sandoval. I came back to the State of NV and was living and working here in Elko, NV in 2009 from OR and trying to get regular employment to get money coming in to eat and sleep somewhere. While I had a small income from other areas. I was trying to locate missing grandchildren, and seeing if my daughter was alive anywhere in USA. I have Governor # of 48204 you can check with law enforcement also please. I hate all the false info that is out about whom is in charge of State and Senator jobs. And whom is allowed to work in them; only Americans.

Hi, I'm a long time user of Wikimedia, and I think it is a great tool. It has helped me many times, so thanks.

However, I was very surprised to find a subject, "roman numerals", that was not covered. I have forgotten the letter for 500. I believe that it may be "d". So I came here for a quick reminder and to my surprise, I found nothing!

Maybe we need a page for roman numerals! What they are, when they were used, how they were used, the limitations, and how they were replaced with a better system.

Actually, I was wondering how large a number could be represented with roman numerals. For example, MMMDCCCLXXXVIII Is this 3,888?

            MMMIMICIX Is this 3,999?
MMMM Is this 4,000? Is there any limit to how many M,s are allowed, or are there more letters that I don't know?

Thank you, Wayne Fuqua DeWire@Juno.Com -- 21:16, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

Hello! The page you are looking for is on Wikipedia already. 'D' is indeed the symbol for 500. The article discusses large numbers in Roman numerals. You can use a Roman numeral converter to check, for example this page or Wolfram Alpha (which is great for many things). PiRSquared17 (talk) 22:35, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

I think the work being done by Wiki is heroic.

Therefore - even though the exchange rate made my donation (dollar for dollar) much more expensive for me than appeared on your bank balance I still put myself out there and donated quite a bit more than requested.

It was meant to be a one time donation. And thus far I have donated twice.

My computer has a fixed IP address. So how come Wiki is still asking me to donate? Again. And again?

I have done my bit. Your requests for financial contribution don't acknowledge that someone may have donated previously and now impinge on my sense of fair play.

Why can't i sign.up it won't let me.

WMF does not allow open editing and self-registering of accounts at wikimediafoundation.org right now. Nevertheless, you can request for an account at the WMF wiki. See RFACC for details. --Glaisher [talk] 14:42, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

I became familiar with Wikipaedia several years ago ......but only as a way to obtain info on a specific subject or to research an item of interest from news of the day in Canada. Now I see it is much more than I thought. The world of instant technological innovation followed by change often initiated by social media discussions, etc. brings much good to the world, in general. However, along with the good stuff I'm learning through the trial/error route many of the pitfalls of such innovative processes. Keeping ahead of the nasty folks who create havoc with systems or those who use their energies for neferious reasons is an ongoing task that challenges ones sanity.

I'm keen to understand and keep up with what's new but for the moment, I've had to take a personal time-out-from-email, facebook, twitter, web sites, and the world of ISPs, browsers, servers, etc. etc. etc. Here I am today, post-time out! It feels like I've just begun again and I don't like what I see. Having been hacked, lost money, etc. my challenge today is to understand Internet security, thus I've found your Zone. I'm of an age where I feel most fortunate to have struggled through the 70's, 80's, 90'3 and now in the second decade of this century. I am able to use e-mail, cell-phones, and learning an Apple Ipad (tough for this soul) while trying to keep afloat of the hardware/software challenges. I'm retired and enjoy an active life style. I personally want to thank you and the Staff of dedicated souls in wikipaedia. Thank you.

Regarding Template:Contribute; Transaction Fees

A breakdown of the transaction fees deducted from the donation amount for each type of payment would be extremely helpful to those of us who have multiple payment options available and who wish to maximize the amount of our donation that will actually reach Wikimedia Foundation. According to Paypal, Amazon and Paypal presently charge the same rates (2.9% + $0.30 per transaction, though Paypal at least reduces this to 2.2% + $0.30 for nonprofits - not sure about Amazon), but I don't know how this stacks up to debit and credit transactions. -- 15:25, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Regarding Ads on wikipedia

Stop begging for handouts and put ads on your site. Please consider the following thoughtful and constructive arguments for your solution to the continual prosperity of wikipedia:

1) Intelligent ads are actually a *service* to both viewers and advertisers. When a buyer finds a new product that he/she wanted but didn't know about, everybody wins, and the middleman has provided a legitimate service.

2) By posting this annoying banner on your website, begging for an arbitrary handout in exchange for a service that you already provide to everyone for free, you're actually running a very intrusive and bothersome GIANT ad, which NOBODY is interested in. You're in fact doing the very thing that you are saying you won't do.

3) By not running ads, you also continue to place into jeopardy, all the billions of bytes of priceless information that we have contributed to the global community. That information belongs to everyone, all that you are doing is providing the hosting service. As the host, you are the caretaker of our data. It's your responsibility to ensure the safety of the property that we have entrusted to you. Make the right decision, change your policy to ensure the forever safety of our data.

-Rob Christian rm.rf.etc@gmail.com

Hello Rob ("rm -rf /etc"). You may be interested in this FAQ question about this.
A large part of the Wikimedia community (and the WMF) feel that putting ads in an educational website would hurt the integrity of the project. The main arguments against advertising are:
  • The readers' (and our editors') privacy (we don't want to give ad agencies our readers' details)
  • Neutrality. If there are ads in an article, maybe companies will ask for Wikipedia to write nice biased articles for them. We don't want to make it seem like companies are in charge of the content. The community, and ultimately the WMF and the Board, are in charge of the content. How can we say that spam is not allowed in Wikipedia when there is spam all over every article?
  • The community. A large part of our editors might leave over this. Some might fork Wikipedia a la Enciclopedia Libre Universal en Español.
That said, there are some Wikipedians who agree with you: w:Wikipedia:Funding Wikipedia through advertisements. (I am just a volunteer) PiRSquared17 (talk) 21:17, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

Regarding Ways to Give

I've got some bitcoins and litecoins I would donate, and I think wikipedia accepting these currencies would be mutually beneficially for all communities involved. Not to mention, this would be insanely easy to setup... You guys could have it done by this afternoon. Plus, the cryptocurrency community would lose their sh*t and probably end your fundraiser just to make a point.

but whatever. It's your site... :p

Please see this explanation for why the Wikimedia Foundation does not (currently) accept bitcoin donations. Sorry for the inconvenience. (Note: I am not employed by the Wikimedia Foundation; I'm a volunteer contributor.) PiRSquared17 (talk) 00:57, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
I suggest yu use one of the online Bitcoin/Litecoin converters (backed by a common bank) to convert them into common currencies to transfer to the WMF. Legal converters are backed by banks that will want first that you authentify your identity to accept converting these cyptocurrencies into currencies with legal tender (this is a often a legal requirement of these banks).
Some cytocurrencies don't ask for your identity, but the transactions are at your own risks, and the converting rate may not be advantageous, or they will take excessive amounts of your cryptocoins to process your transaction. These cyptocurrencies are exposed to hihh risks if you want to convert them back to normal currencies. You've been warned !
And they are extremely risky to invert in as they are highly speculative (much more than any legal tender currency or stock value). You absolutely cannot warranty the value of your wallet including during the time needed to process a conversion transaction (those transactions are really too long for cryptocurrencies when they are really too much volatile). For exampel the Bitcoin value has quadrupled in just two weeks, but it has also known some brutal falls where it lost more than 30% of its value in a similar very short time. Given the time needed to process this type of currency (could be more than one week), this means that transaction processors need to take very high transaction fees to accept your order.
These cryptocurrencies have absolutely no liquidity, their value is completely artificial (potentially void) until the time you'll have been able to convert them back to standard currencies in regular bank accounts (so you need to find "buyers" for your Bitcoin sale offer and your Bitcoins sell offer may also nver be accepted in the virtual markets).
You should also know that Bitcoins are currently under attack by "selfish" hackers, but also by a growing set with millions of PC harnessed by malwares, trying to mine enormous quantities of Bitcoins in order to control it and break its security chain. If the security breach succeeds, lots of owners of Bitcoins will have their wallets become completely void, because processors will refuse to make any transactions with some very long chains of transactions. So the value of lots of wallets could become suddenly void, at any time, without any prior notice (and you'll find no one to help you, these wallets currently have absolutely no institution accepting to warranty at least a minimum value in a reasonnable recovery time). Bitcoin wallets are like 1917 Russian stocks, their last owner will loose everything if this sudden fall ever happens.
It's certainly the main reason why the WMF cannot accept them: you have to endorse the financial risk yourself by converting them first to your own regular bank account (and pay the excessive fees!). verdy_p (talk) 19:50, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org and bitcoin

You should accept bitcoin for donations. It's so much easier for some people.

Please see this explanation for why the Wikimedia Foundation does not (currently) accept bitcoin donations. Sorry for the inconvenience. (Note: I'm not employed by the WMF, I'm just a volunteer contributor.) PiRSquared17 (talk) 00:56, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

As a longtime contributor of contents to Wikipedia, I was quite displeased reading on Jul/30 that the Foundation has chosen to accept donations "in bitcoins", wrapping the announcement in laudatory comments about that commodity.
I understand that the Foundation is not actually accepting bitcoins, but rather accepting dollars from Coinbase, that come from the sale of bitcoins that people send them. Still, this highly visible decision, and the terms of the announcement, help lend an undeserved credibility to bitcoin, that may induce unwary people to put their money into an investment of extremely high risk (to put it very mildly), in a market that is infested with scammers and incompentent entrepreneurs. Just at MtGOX, over than half a billion dollars were stolen from people who had trusted bitcoin, sometimes with all their life savings; and that was only one of hundreds of thefts and scams that have been reported.
Bitcoin was ostensibly desigedn to provide a method for e-payment that would be cheap, safe, convenient etc. It has yet to prove that it can do that, and the more it is examined and used, the more elusive that goal seems to be. But many of the most ardent "believers" liked it because they thought that it would allow them to evade bank and government controls, and thus be a safe way to pay for drugs and other illegal services, evade taxes, launder criminal money, and so on. Having realized that bitcoin is not at all "safe" in that sense, that segment of the community is quietly abandoning bitcoin and betting on other (hopefully) "truly anonymous" crypto-coins.
Another unstated but widely assumed promise of bitcoin was that, as a currency with no central managing authority, it would free the world from the oppressive oligopoly of big international banks and government monetary agencies. But the "mining" of bitcoin, which is the ostensibly volunteer and uncoordinated activity that keeps the system running, is already dominated by two or three large enterprises; so that the eventual success of bitcoin would merely exchange a few dozen poorly regulated international banks for a much smaller clique of totally unregulated "mining" corporations, whose owners are largely unknown.
Another class of early adopters hoped to pull the "private fiat money" scam: namely, create a currency that is not backed by any asset, convince some people to use it for trade, and, when it has become sufficiently well-accepted, take out of their closets a large stock of that currency that they saved for themselves, and use it to buy a fortune worth of other property. About 90% of all existing bitcoins are currently hoarded, perhaps more than half of them acquired by their current owners for pennies. For those early investors, the scam could pay off handsomely today, whether they sell their bitcoins or use them to buy goods through Coinbase and other processors. Their profit will come from the pockets of those who buy those coins, from them or from Coinbase; unless they too can find "greater fools" who will take over their loss by buyin their coins at a higher price.
It is worth reminding people that the price of bitcoin is not pegegd to anything, and no one can honestly predict what it will be next year, or even next week. Since last year, it has been determined almost entirely by speculative trading in the Chinese bitcoin-yuan exchanges. Since the all-time high of 1200$ last November, brought about by the opening of the Chinese market, the price has crashed to 400$, then recovered to 800$, then tumbled to 450$, then rallied to 600$, and is now again on its way down. All these swings were due to the Chinese day traders reacting to policies and events in China, that had no relevance to the world's or Chinese economy except to the Chinese bitcoin market. And its price is not connected to its potential utility as a currency of commerce, since such use has been prohibited in China.
Please forgive me for this long soul-dump, but, for all that, and more, I hope that the Wikipedia Foundation will make it clear to the general public that their acceptance of donations through Coinbase is not an endorsement of this dubious enterprise, in any way.
--Jorge Stolfi (talk) 18:26, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

I completely disagree, Accepting currency does not mean endorsement of that currency or its backers. For an example of this go to North Korea or Iran and see if anyone there who is "anti-american" accepts greenbacks. I would put a large amount of money on a bet that they would accept them. CombatWombat42 (talk) 19:31, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Please read the post. It has three misleading statements: that wikipedia now accepts bitcoin (it does not, it accepts dollars), that bitcoin is a currency (legally and factually it is not) and that it is accepted by "a growing number of institutions and merchants throughout the world" (almost all the businesses that do so actually accept dollars from Bitpay/Coinbase/etc. not bitcoins, and in some countries that use is illegal or has explicitly been banned). Bitcoin holders and salesmen like to pretend all three are true, but they are not.
I do not object to Wikipedia accepting donations through any means whatsoever: I object to the tone of that annoucement, which unfortunately has been read as an endorsement by bitcoiners and is being used to promote bitcoin.
By the way, many of the the comments under that announcement suggest that the authors who say that they wanted to donate bitcoin are not really interested in helping Wikipedia, but only in promoting the use of bitcoin and/or the political ideology that has become attached to it. --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 02:09, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
That still doesn't address the point that Wikipedia accepting bitcoin does not mean they endorse it. One notable example is the EFF, who also accepts donations through bitcoin, but have said that they do not endorse it (nor do they endorse other means of payments, including PayPal and credit cards).
Regarding your three points, what Wikipedia does once it receives bitcoin is irrelevant - the foundation functions in USD, and any money it receives, from any currency, is presumingly converted into USD. Heck, the fact that Wikipedia takes all bitcoin donations in USD helps support the statement that Wikipedia does not officially endorse the concept of bitcoin. As for the definition of currency, it is broad and debatable, but in its most basic definition of being a system of payment, then yes, bitcoin is a currency. Wikipedia's own article has definitions that support this, and the article covers bitcoin as a form of digital currency.
In the end, the way a portion of the bitcoin community treats bitcoin is irrelevant. Yes, bitcoin is used for illegal drug trafficking, but so is USD. I, for one, happen to use bitcoin to innocently buy myself Humble Bundle video games. Dell, Newegg, and many other billion-dollar institutions also find it to be worth accepting. If bitcoin proves to be fruitful for the foundation, I don't see any compelling reason to stop support, and people disliking it is not a very good reason. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 17:22, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
It seems I have not been able to make my point across yet. I do not think that "Wikipedia accepting bitcoin is an endorsement of bitcoin". The problem is the way that blog announcement was worded. That announcement leas the reader to believe that Wikipedia is actually keeping the bitcoins and endorses them. The announcement shoudl have said only that "You can now also donate in bitcoins through Coinbase, that will convert them to dollars for us" -- without that explanation/promotion of bitcoin. And it would have been appropriate to add "(It should be understood that aceptance of donations by these methods does not imply their endorsement or promotion by the Wikimedia Foundation.)" --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 05:05, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

The most attractive thing about Wikipedia is that there is no commercial advertising. As small subscription for use might augment your income from trusts . However I do wince when I see all that gobbledegook in the three lines at the bottom of this page. Is that really necessary ?

Hi. What three lines are you talking about? Please be specific, and feel free to copy/paste if it would make it clearer. PiRSquared17 (talk) 15:45, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

I was Religion Editor at the Voice of America when humanae Vitae was published. I was fortunate to interview a group of dissident priests in the Washington D. Personally, I would rather have advertisers pop-ups than begging pop-ups.

-- unsigned comment sent at 15:15, 6 December 2013 (UTC) by (talk)

It could be a user preference for notifications. For now only the top banner style is supported, opening popup windows notifications are not supported.
Popup windows cause evident troubles on smartphones, or frequently cause windows stacking for long behind the browser window, using precious memory, they also require more clicks to close each one, and are harassing users that want to use other applications in background than just their browser with an easy switch from the browser to the other, or from one tab to another on an unrelated site).
In-document notifications are easier to manage by users, and you can define preferences if you don't want to see most of them, they don't require more clics to close them, and they are much less restricted.
An expected coming change will avoid sending you the same global notification message across multiple Wikimedia sites you may visit when you are connected with your unified "single-user-login" (SUL) login. verdy_p (talk) 19:39, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

Good Morning

I just donated $250 to Wikipedia; I believe that unless we have vital resources like this site for students and for those who are seeking more specific background to their questions, they will no longer be available as resources. I do not use Wikipedia frequently but when I have done so, the information has been accurate, informative, well-organized and well written.

I want to thank you for myself as well as to those who may not be in a financial position to donate...my donation is for them.

Keep up the good work!

Richard S. Sargeant Fort Lauderdale, FL

Thank you for your support, Mr. Sargeant. PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:56, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

I would like to donate but not until you stop giving away magic secrets on your pages.

Hello. Could you please clarify what you mean? Wikipedia is supposed to be a complete encyclopedia (permanent work-in-progress), so of course it would contain information about magic tricks. Or maybe you mean something else? Anyway, you should discuss articles by visiting them and then clicking the "talk" tab on the top, and then the "new section" link. Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

Here's a thought:

Fundraise at the beginning of the school year in September when students still have some disposable income. It's harder to dig up some buck$ for Wiki in December when the semester's budget is wrapping up, and the Christmas gift list has just sucked the average disposable income pot down into the black hole of Black Monday!

I asked on Talk:Fundraising 2013. PiRSquared17 (talk) 04:23, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback. In common with many other non-profits we do find that December is generally the best time of year for fundraising, so that's when we hold our largest drive. However we realise that situations may differ for other people, and we gratefully accept donations all year round. You can give at https://donate.wikimedia.org or by clicking the "Donate to Wikipedia" link on the left hand side of the Wikipedia site. Peter Coombe (WMF) (talk) 20:40, 12 December 2013 (UTC)

WMF does now accept bitcoin. Rich Farmbrough 01:07 26 August 2014 (GMT).

A foundation I am associated with made a $10,000 contribution a few years ago and we did not receive any acknowledgement or thanks or feedback whatsoever.

Thank you for your support. Usually donors get a thank you message. Since you didn't I hope you will accept at least a belated one. Is your organization listed on wmf:Benefactors, wmf:Benefactors/2011-2012, or wmf:Benefactors/2010–2011? I can contact someone at the WMF (or you can email them) if you want. Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

i have contributed $35 a couple of times before, but I am finding that your articles are very biased. This year I will not be contributing. The most current entry that I have problems with is aspartame. Calling the very true symptoms of eating methanol an internet hoax is unfounded. This article appears to be written by the drug industry. If you have achy joints, my suggestion would be to lay off artificial sweeteners and see what you think then of the "internet hoax." Users have no reason to not want to eat this toxic stuff if it truly causes no problems.

Hello. Please bring this up at the talk-page for that article. The Wikimedia Foundation doesn't write the content of Wikipedia articles; volunteers do. Wikipedia does have a goal of being neutral. So, if you think it is biased, you should discuss it on the talk page of "Aspartame" or the "Aspartame controversy" page. There has already been a lot of discussion on both. I would like to create a page for Public Health Nursing and contribute content to the page.

please inform me in the method of submitting content.

I am:

Steve Garascia RN, MSN, 119 Maple Ridge Drive Monmouth, Maine 04259

I am a Supervisor with Maine Public Health Nursing and believe there should be information about the history and current work of PHN at Wikipedia.

Hello Mr. Garascia. You don't need to ask to contribute content. You do not even need to create an account, but it is recommended. To create a Wikipedia article, see this guide.
There is already a page called "Public health nursing". You can edit it by clicking the "edit" tab on the page. I recommend you read the tutorial. You can ask at the "Teahouse" (help page) if you need guidance.
I would personally recommend that you create an account on Wikipedia, and read the tutorial there. You should probably note that you work for Maine Public Health Nursing if you intend to create an article on that particular topic. fundraising banner problems and faq problems

On wikipedia, there is a banner asking for money. It has been there for months and months. It links to this FAQ https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/FAQ/en#Why_doesn.27t_Wikipedia_use_ads_for_revenue.3F which says you don't use ads. But the banner appearing all the time is just the same as an ad. In addition, the banner always says if enough people give the fundraiser will be over - but it never ends. I point this out because it looks bad. The most irritating thing is that the banner appears with a small time lag, just long enough to mean half the time you click on it when you were trying to click on the search box at the top. If it has to be there permanently, could it at least have a permanent slot that does not affect the loading of the page? And can you update the FAQ? And change the banner so it does not promise an end (unless you really mean to end it)? Thanks, hope this feedback is useful.

I asked on Talk:Fundraising 2013. PiRSquared17 (talk) 04:23, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
Sorry to hear you've been seeing the banner so much. In the past few months (up until December) we have been using cookies to limit the number of banners that each user sees to just one or two. If you have cookies disabled in your browser, or set to clear on closing, then this could be why you have been seeing more than expected.
Now we are running full scale, and approximately half-way to reaching our target. You can always hide the banner by clicking the small X in the top right (although note that you must also have cookies enabled for this to work).
Unfortunately the slight delay of the banner loading is unavoidable, as we have to serve different banners in different countries. We have worked hard to get this down to a minimum. Peter Coombe (WMF) (talk) 21:46, 12 December 2013 (UTC)

Regarding donation methods

Wikipedia is one of the founding fathers of the internet. the wikimedia foundation is a driving force behind the great innovation and evolution of humanity in the digital age. I'm disappointed that you don't accept the future of money (cryptocurrency) as a method of donation. while i was in the military I cumulatively donated over $500 to the wikimedia foundation, however you won't see anything else from me unless you correct this oversight and start accepting bitcoin. it takes seconds to download a wallet and get a BTC address that you can post on the donation page. there is no excuse for this.

in the age of information, ignorance is a choice

Hi. Although the Wikimedia Foundation does not accept bitcoin (see FAQ), you can use bitpay. You may discuss this (or read existing discussion) in the section above: #Regarding_Ways_to_Give_3. PiRSquared17 (talk) 04:41, 12 December 2013 (UTC)

Regarding cryptographic currencies

Great organizations survive because of innovation. wikimedia is struggling at the moment because the culture surrounding it is becoming increasingly hostile to novel ideas and "new blood". You guys can't even stop paid articles, and you refuse to consider the potential of breakthrough technology. wikimedia has it's work cut out for it if it wants to stay on top of it's game. competitors lurk everywhere, and your place in the internet culture is not guaranteed. look at yahoo, lycos, netscape, microsoft, for examples. I assume that the reason wikimedia does not accept bitcoin is actually because top leadership hasn't put forth any effort to investigate this, and as such, low level moderators like yourself have adopted a policy of "deny by default". this policy is not in the best interests of wikimedia longterm. I would appreciate a open response at shepshep7@gmail.com

Please read my reply directly above this section. PiRSquared17 (talk) 04:57, 12 December 2013 (UTC)

@PiRSquared17, "If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Moving, be like water. Still, be like a mirror. I bid you good day

I wouldn't assume that. I'll ask about this again, but I doubt the WMF will change their decision until 2014 (or later), if at all. PiRSquared17 (talk) 05:05, 12 December 2013 (UTC)

wikimediafoundation.org - Donations

Donations - how to get more money.

At present there is no clear deadline or goal - so there is no real pressure to donate. You are more likely to receive donations if you set deadlines. Generally fundraisers show deadlines with dates & financial goals, so people can see the need to help out.

Why not do this and share this positive message - "Wiki is here to stay" (which implies it won't be if you don't do something)

We need to raise 'X' amount and we need it by 'Y' date. (This chart shows where we are in real time).

Did you know you can offset your donation against tax, which means that it will cost you nothing? (insert a clear explanation with a link to the relevant form)

Make your contribution below from 1.00 up to a maximum of 1,000,000.00 individuals, small businesses and Corporates, everyone's doing it. (The UK minimum amount suggested is £3.00 - ideally the minimum amount should be the minimum amount that covers the processing fee)

Thank you your email receipt has been sent to you.

How about something like that? In a more confident style that consumers expect (and more importantly) respect. It needs to be tailored to each country to be really effective of course. Make the donation as easy and rewarding as it can possibly be. Yours Sincerely,

A Wiki Fan.

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

Today we have many choices thanks to the Bill of Rights of the Constitution of the United States and the wonderful advances made in communications, particularly the open and free internet. We want to keep it that way so I donate. Now, that said, I would be willing to donate more and regularily if I KNEW that my money was not going to fund some organization that I was opposed to and I believe I'm not alone in that sentiment. Can you visualize a pair of independent auditing organizations whom you would open your books to who would spell out disbursements made? I do not want to support a philosophy or group which opposes the principles I believe in. I believe you attempt to take an objective approach to the subjects you define and therefore I applaud you. Would you consider offering, where appropriate, differing viewpoints from Not-professional-spokespersons so that if there is a 'spin' to the defination, a searcher can immediately access the pro/con perspectives? This would help those of us looking for a quick-look at an issue. You always provide references for more information which is splendid. This pro/con approach on appropriate subjects would put more objective information into the hands of the inquirer to let one decide for one's self as to the virtue of the issue. Case in point, ACA or Obamacare/ death panels, is berated in your article which, in later revelations made two weeks ago, Governor Palin's remarks were spot on. It appears that a Pro-Obama writer composed your article on the ACA. It appears that you allowed this to happen which seems sloppy. Hmmmph! Isn't anyone honest anymore? The emperor's new clothes come to mind. Well, keep up the good work you do, anyway. But if more objectivity is offered by another 'wiki-wannabe' I think I would be more inclined to donate to them. steve from the midwest

Hello Steve. Wikipedia articles are supposed to be neutral and represent all major views, but not give undue weight to very small views. If you believe that a particular article is biased, you can bring it up on the discussion page. Since Wikipedia allows anyone to contribute, it is possible that at any given time an article has some bias. We do not claim Wikipedia is perfect. Some corporations pay PR people to write biased articles for them, but this is obviously frowned upon and their biased articles are often deleted or cleaned up. I do not understand part of your comment -- do you think organizations are paying the Wikimedia Foundation(WMF) to have positive articles? The WMF only gets involved in content disputes when a legal issue is involved (with a few exceptions, perhaps). I think the most political thing the WMF has done was the SOPA blackout, and even that was voted on by volunteer editors. There are some websites that have pro/con lists on popular issues, e.g. [16]. I'm not sure that would work on Wikipedia, as it is not quite encyclopedic. I think it would be better to just have unbiased articles, but a short summary of the pros/cons might be good for some subjects. In any case, the WMF probably won't decide -- it could be proposed at W:WP:VPR though. PiRSquared17 (talk) 04:37, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

Regarding Ways to Give

This page should also include a solicitation to donate large collections of content and other intellectual property.   — C M B J   07:51, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

So basically ask them to license things under CC-BY-SA? PiRSquared17 (talk) 16:32, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

Seasons Greetings, I recently received the email for donation time. I have someone blocking me from using this site. I start my email site and then get blocked from it. I have tried twice to have a topic page. I got a email saying thank you for the donation of one million dollars not really knowing if true. I have the video in my you tube watched history of Peru. I have one bank that I know of Ozark Mountain Bank. I think I donated ten dollars then got blocked from the site. Sorry but something is going on that is hard to trust. If the above statement really happened I was not really aware.

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

Unfortunately your "foundation" as I see it is no more than a way for trolls to dictate what is notable or relevant as they see fit. I find that many artists and artisans are being deleted due to criteria that is fundamentally wrong. Until such time that your editor/trolls stop dictating what is notable...I will not be making any donations to your pages or anything remotely connect to it.

The deletion of artists and artisans by these people is unwarranted and ludicrous considering that mass killers are listed by name giving them advertising and the publicity they sought out in the first place. While myself and other artists like myself are deleted when our works have enlightened and touched families in a social moral and uplifting manner.

Shame on you...shame shame shame.

Show me one serial killer that has won an award such as a Gemini for outstanding Family Programming or has people THANKING them for their work and the moral messages we instilled in them or their children and I will gladly concede that we as artists are not notable.
