From time to time, staff members of the Wikimedia Foundation conduct online chat sessions known as office hours. The events provide Wikimedia community members the opportunity to ask questions or provide feedback on the work of the staff member hosting the session. There is generally no set agenda; often, the staff member hosting the session will be assisted by a facilitator, who determines the order of questions, and generally helps to keep things going.

Sessions typically last one hour, and happen more or less once a week. Time of day varies, both according to staff availability, and in order to offer people in different parts of the world the opportunity to participate. (Check local timezones) Announcements are made on this page, and on the Foundation-L email list.

IRC is the technology used for office hours.

If you haven't used IRC before, it may be easiest to use a web client; this means you don't have to install any software on your computer. Just click here to join in, and then choose a username when prompted: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=wikimedia-office You may be prompted to click through a security warning. It's fine. Another option is http://chat.wikizine.org.
