This request for micro-funding to Africa Environment Wikifocus has just been submitted by Oby Ezeilo on 14-02-2023 and has been selected for support.

Description[edit]

Please add description of the request, with all the necessary details.

Many members of Wiki For Senior Citizens Network has always been interested in the different changes happening to our environment due to climate change. This is mostly due to the fact that senior citizens have seen and connected with the culture and environment for a very long time from their youth and directly feels the effect of climate change.

Wiki For Senior Citizen Network wishes to organise 2 edit a thon sessions. In these sessions, there will be training and discussion on environmental issues. There will also be editing/improving information  in Wikidata and Wikipedia about Nigerian climate activists and environmental experts including local women involved in climate change. Most importantly, the session is hoped to encourage and identify seniors who would wish to dedicate their effort and champion national efforts on climate change issues and follow up contributions to WMF in this regard.

Context[edit]

We will organise 2 edit a thon session. Each of the programme with start with two short presentations/discussions. The 1st presentation will be given by a local environmental expert. It will x-ray international and local issues on environmental change. It will propose some practises that we can all adopt to start reversing the challenges of climate change and urge more seniors to join the advocacy. The 2nd talk will be on the different efforts by different groups in WMF to support and document climate change issues. These presentations will encourage participants to join the different movements that may appeal to them and support WMF in this direction.

After these presentations, there will be edit a thon to add and improve content on different Nigerian climate activists and academia in Wikipedia and wikidata. Since many of these seniors come from different language and cultural background, there will also be translations in different languages as different participants may chose to carry out.

Summary[edit]

Activities Record[edit]

Consider including the following information:

  • What did you do?
  • Who organised it all? Who was on your team (who did what?)?
  • Did any organisations or associations or groups partner with you to make it happen? If so, who are they?
  • When did you hold events, where and how? How did you let people know about it?
  • Who attended your event/s? What did they do at the event? What did they think of the event you held?

In a bid to encourage the Senior citizens' interest in contributing from their wealth of experience and knowledge in environmental/climate-related topics, an Edithaton was carried out in the Network - giving them the opportunity to share their insight through the different wiki projects. The organizing team made up of Oby Ezeilo - Organizer/Project lead, Bukky658 - Facilitator and Affiongtessy- Program Assistant, carried out presentations/discussions on issues bothering on climate change and its effects on our ecosystem. The team also gave highlights on some of the notable Nigerian climate activists/environmental experts, as well as local women involved in climate change projects. Through these Wiki Projects, some of the senior citizens were able to create/improve wikidata pages/properties of notable environmental activists while some were able to contribute in their various local wikipedias - all of which were activated on the project dashboard. Also, due to proximity as this was the Easter Festive period, most of these senior citizens were not able to grace the in-person event which lead to the organizing of the on-line live-edithaton with a live demo from one of the facilitators - Bukky658 and moderated by the Organizer/Project lead - Oby Ezeilo. This also recorded a success as some of the senior citizens who couldn't attend that of the in-person were able to join from the comfort of their home and eagerly contributed.

Thanks to the support and partnership with Africa Environment Wikifocus, this project - Wiki For Senior Citizen Network Environment Edit a Thon/Training became a reality and was successfully carried out.

This project is a classified hybrid project which encompasses an in-person and online sequence as captured in the timeline of the project stated below: Timeline of the project 3rd of March to 30th April 2023. Online Launch and training: 18th March 2023 In-person training & Editathon: 24th and 31st March 2023 Online Discussion :6th April 2023 Activity Translate-a-thon, Editing Wikipedia and Wikidata Programs Closure:30th April 2023

Goals and Outcomes[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes, to an extent, the goal of this project was met as we recorded quite a good number of Senior Citizens who were eager to share from their well of experience to matters concerning Environmental/climate topics as can be tracked on the dashboard. Yes, I am happy with the project and its aftermath, as at the end of the project, a total number of 40 Editors registered on the dashboard, 42 Articles Created, 104 Articles Edited, and a 715 Total Edits Recorded.

Please use the table below to report on the outcomes achieved, starting with the original targets you shared in your proposal for the microgrant.

Final project metrics
Proposed metrics Anticipated outcome Achieved outcome Explanations
Total expected Participants 40 40 The number of participants that registered on the dashboard exceeded the target
Total expected edits 120 104 A total of 42 new articles were created, 104 edits and 715 total edits. And these were done on the WikiData and Wikpedia projects
No of edit a thon 2 4 In-person and online

Learnings[edit]

What did you learn? What are you proud of? What was challenging? From this experience, what would you do differently if you had to do it again?

Working with senior citizens was very fun and interesting. You get to have a first-hand witness of their joy in being useful once more to the society. They were really eager to share their experience and knowledge through the wiki projects. The team was really happy that they were able to converge these seniors from different locations and gave them a cause to be resourceful to the society once more. Some of the challenges we experienced is in the aspect of technology - most of these senior citizens are not tech savvy and as such experienced quite a number of glitches in putting them through. Considering the outcome of their contribution, they weren't able to reach the set target of the project - one of the causes could be termed the festive period of Easter. Most of them had lots of activities going on their various homes and such did not have much time to contribute more. From this experience, we've learnt not to fix events with senior citizens during festive periods as there's bound to be much distractions during these periods compared to others.

Anything else[edit]

Here you can include any information you think would be useful for the organising teams to know. Here is the link to the receipts of our expenses during the programme. However, we did not collect receipts from all participants for the transport money paid to them. This is because we did not know that the receipts will be need. you will also note that the receipt of payment of the facilitator showed a payment of N52,000.00 Out of that sum, only N50,000.00 was payment for her facilitation. the additional N2,000.00 was not related to this project.

Side note from User:Anthere. Actually the receipts requirement was very much mentioned in the convention signed at the beginning of the project (Senior Citizen - Wiki in Africa convention). This being said Boy, I think you did amazingly well in terms of providing receipts and this is very appreciated and duly noted. Anthere (talk) 01:15, 2 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
