Discussion[edit]

  • @Astinson (WMF): I don't think that we can disable the close button, right? —DerHexer (Talk) 14:34, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't believe so, and it would be in contrast with our expected usage guideline of "Avoid constant use, to prevent banner blindness as much as possible, and to leave some space to the local community."
Additionally, we don't have any evidence that I am aware of that exposing someone to a banner more than 5 or 10 times, has any significant return. On most fundraising and campaign banners, the click through rate falls to near zero by that point.
We also have the evidence that simply inviting readers to read documentation does not lead to significant participation of new editors (i.e. see the background on the Growth Tools: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Growth ). Have the landing pages been tested as effective for newcomers? Are you leveraging the NewComerHomePage?

  • Oppose Oppose As this request only targets the Italian Wikipedia, I would expect a strong consensus to be reached there beforehand the CentralNotice request. I wouldn't really consider this to be consensus. This is not how things are done. --valcio ••• 14:42, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Comment Please, first of all, you should open a discussion on the local village pump (see the instructions here). While I totally appreciate the initiative, you should talk with the community before discussing about the banner, thanks. --Superpes15 (talk) 13:56, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Oppose I appreciate your proactivity, but a lot of work should be done before: first of all, you can improve and update pages and guides for newcomers on the Italian Wikipedia. You can also try to enroll some few motivated users, to discuss what strategy to have and next steps to do, starting from the Progetto Coordinamento. You can also start a discussion with Wikimedia Italia or collaborate with them (exemple) if you think it should help. You can also read and translate pages of the Outreach wikimedia wiki. IMHO a single talk at the local Village Pump will not produce a mid-term or a long-term strategy, and a CentralNotice without a strategy will be useless for the goal.--Pątąfişiķ 08:12, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Oppose Initiatives to promote contributions are always welcome. But: first of all, they shall be discussed and agreed by the local community, in this case it.wiki. Including the identification of the appropriate means to reach a goal. By my experience, as pointed out also by users above, sitenotices like the proposed one are more or less useless for that purpose, by the way. There was not such a local preliminary discussion indeed. So, this is totally an individual initiative of your own, not supported by any community consensus, not resulting from any braing-storming or comparison among alternative proposals. Good will is never a good reason to rush.--Superspritztell me 12:14, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
