[edit]
Description - As outlined in 2019, we have to reach out to scentists, teachers and experts of citizen science during the month of November and December.

Metrics -

Metrics - Uploaded files are the simplest measure of success, but we also categorizes unsuitable files manually, so we can get very precise metrics of useful files. Centralnotices are a key component of the success of WSC, since mass messages, social media and information on some Commons main pages are rarely as important as the direct message on people's screen. In order to increase diversity of the files, the goal are the people who never uploaded anything to a Wiki platform in the past.

What banner(s) will you use? What will be your landing page?

[edit]
Banners - See CentralNotices on Commons

Landing Page - Listed here but also in the sitenotices already listed on Commons.
[edit]
Type of grant - International prizes are a joint agreement of WMEE and WMCH, national competitions are managed by local commitees

    Hi Alexmar,
Just a quick question, the English banner fundraising campaign will be running on English Wikipedia in the US, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Ireland and the UK for part of your campaign. I currently do not see any of these countries wanting to run banners. Do you know yet if anyone from these countries will be running banners after the 30th of November (this is when the fundraising banners go up). If yes, can you please inform me so we can find a solution (the fundraising campaigns are by default set to override other campaigns.). Thank you! JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 07:49, 8 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
JBrungs (WMF) I know nothing about those countries specifically, I can only send a mail to local organizers to come here and write if they know something more. Canada and UK are usually not reactive for WSC so I am not desperate if they get no banner, but USA really needs it, they mostly rely on the banner for WSC. in 2019 for example it was me who had to leave a request for the USA, they had zero files after the first two weeks. In any case there is plenty of time before November. 30th to inform readers. Even a week or 10 days are enough to get the message.--Alexmar983 (talk) 12:58, 8 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
JBrungs (WMF) It isn't much of an issue if the banner is being shown a bit less in December in a few of the countries. What we need is that being shown and that is especially important in English speaking countries, where there is no possibility to use sitnotice banners. The USA, Ireland, and New Zealand have their local campaigns and will definitely need the banner as much as possible. In the UK, Canada, and Australia it is perfectly fine to just show the banner during the second part of November, and that is good enough to have some images from those countries as well. I'd assume that when the fundraising campaign is up it doesn't mean that all other banners would not be shown... they would just be shown less. That is not a problem for us and that would only affect 3 countries. Kruusamägi (talk) 16:01, 8 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Kruusamägiand @Alexmar983,
I double checked on our end and I just wanted to give you some more information. For the past 10 years, December has been the English fundraising campaign time (which is our biggest fundraising campaign) and it therefore takes priority over other banners. We run banners at full 100% capacity during the start of the campaign (from the 30th of November onwards) but do fall back on a lower impression rate throughout December. We cannot say yet when this will happen. This means that your banner will get impressions during this time but they will be less. Once a reader has seen the fundraising banner 10x, they will see the Science banner. Once we reduce the 100% impression rate, you will also get more impressions on your banners. Please be aware that we are running fundraising banners throughout December in Ireland, Canada, Australia, UK, US, New Zealand, and Switzerland and that your banners in those countries will be affected by this. Prior to the 30th of November there is no clash with your banners. I hope this clarifies things a bit. I am happy to help you with any questions you might have around our fundraising campaigns. Best, JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 14:11, 9 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
JBrungs (WMF) to me the core target is to get a banner from November 15th to November 30th (circa) in the countries with a national competition. That would be probably enough. If the intensity decreases later it's not the end of the world. Plus, we might still get banners in other countries and science is transnational. Last year a Thai uploader studying in Australia uploaded an image related to the USA in the USA (we have no strict rule, it's the taste of the national juries that decides). They won. Similarly Antarctica images end up everywhere. So it's not so critical, as long as we get in any case decent sitenotice for at least 7-10 days in some countries with national prizes.--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:18, 9 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
WSC take place once every two years since 2015 and within the same timeframe. So we are aware of it. But there are all sorts of campaigns happening around the year and there just isn't any other better time. That is also why we are somewhat flexible at national campaigns and different countries have their own campaigns at slightly different times depending on what suits them best.
For us, it is mainly important to have a strong banner presence in the 2nd half of November (including at some [bigger] countries, wherein this year there is no local team, but where we usually receive a lot of submissions) + second [and bit smaller] push at December at least in the countries that run into that month (and in Spain the campaign period is only on December 1–20). Kruusamägi (talk) 14:51, 9 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Dear @Kruusamägi and @Alexmar983,
This sounds good. We will not have any banners up in the first two weeks of your campaign so you can do a big push then and as mentioned above, your banners will be the fallback option so you will still get some impressions in December. I just wanted to raise this so you are aware. Have a great competition and I am looking forward to seeing the photos! JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 06:20, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

JBrungs (WMF) I see from the upload metrics that we probabloy have no sitenotice yet. Is there any feedback when it might start?--Alexmar983 (talk) 02:50, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexmar983,
I am sorry I am not the right person to help you with decisions around starting or the banner, I simply keep an eye on community campaigns to see how they are happening in relation to fundraising campaigns. Ciell or Ата can you help further? JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 06:28, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
User:Ilario you started the campaign in 2019, can you please tell us something? Just to get an idea, I made the request few days before than I did in 2019 and I would like at least to know when we start. Some countries cannot proceed without a sitenotice.--Alexmar983 (talk) 06:48, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Messagesd on enWIkipedia

[edit]

In the meantime, I am leaving a message on the project talk pages of enwikipedia, as I usually do. This year I am also informing them that a sitenotice might appear: astronomy spaceflight biology, energy chemistry physical chemistry archeology elements climate change geology chemicals solar system robotics neuroscience Evolutionary biology electronics sexology ecology palaeontology education pharmacology hospitals Doing...

Hi all, I take this request in charge coordinating directly with the Fundraising team.

I am following the event closer and I have a direct contact with the organizer as with the Fundraising team for the Fundraising Campaign in Switzerland. Ilario (talk) 07:01, 17 листопада 2021 (UTC)

Ilario, do I understand correctly that you will be creating the banner campaigns? --Ата (talk) 07:55, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
DerHexer, this request is definitely more in your area of expertise than mine 🙂 -- Ата (talk) 17:02, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, sure. I will create the banner and the campaign. --Ilario (talk) 07:34, 19 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ilario: What is the situation with the banner? Competition is currently running in Estonia, Finland, Ireland, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Poland, South Africa, Switzerland, Thailand, Ukraine, and the USA (that is: all of them should have active banners). It would also be nice to have banners in French, German, Greek, Romanian, Belarussian, Swedish, Arabic, Portuguese, Italian, Malay, and Slovenian as listed here. Kruusamägi (talk) 18:30, 21 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Kruusamägi: the banner is ready and running in Switzerland. At the moment is in French, English, German and Italian. I will include the other countries and languages today (Anyways Poland and Ukraine have their own banner already). --Ilario (talk) 16:00, 22 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ilario: Just checking: what countries to have the banner?
Also, feedback from South Africa indicated, that the link is to an international page on not to the local page as requested here. Kruusamägi (talk) 09:42, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ilario: Does Spain now also have the banner (WSC in Sain started on December 1st) and is everything now ok with South Africa? And what countries did get the banner? Kruusamägi (talk) 21:17, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Kruusamägi: this is the list of countries CH, EE, ES, FI, IE, LI, MK, NZ, TH, US, ZA. --Ilario (talk) 13:11, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ilario: Ok. It is just that feedback from Spain implies, that the organizer there had not seen any banner yet. Nor have I seen a single WSC banner impression in Estonia. And from some countries, there has been a surprisingly low number of uploads, that refer, that there might be some issues with the banners. And do the South African people see the banner that likes to their landing page?
Also it would be nice that get at least some international banner impression to French, German, and Italian speakers. We have had plenty of participants from those countries in previous years and that could greatly increase the total number of images submitted. Kruusamägi (talk) 13:37, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
