In this session, you will learn about:

1. How Query Wikidata helped us to understand better our archive of over 18.000 life stories

Founded in 1991, Museu of the Person is a virtual and collaborative museum of life stories. The museum has one of the largest collections on the history of private life in Brazil and is open to anyone who wants to register and share their life story. The museum believes that valuing the cultural diversity and the story of each person as a patrimony of humanity contributes to the construction of a culture of peace. For 30 years, we have received life stories in different media formats. Even in the 1990s, we published stories received via email from collaborators. Today, our website offers a platform that allows the submission of text and multimedia narratives. We have also carried out over 300 oral memory collection projects, in connection with local communities. In total we have interviewed over 18.000 people from all over the country. However, our current platform only provided us with limited intel about our own archive, due development limitations. This has significantly improved once we started using the Query Wikidata, which allows us to have a deeper understanding of our archive, as well being able to create graphs with this information, as int can be seen in this article: https://medium.com/creative-commons-we-like-to-share/commons-voices-contributing-life-histories-to-the-open-knowledge-ecosystem-in-brazil-66ca1fca79fd We would like to share with the public the benefits from using the Query Wikidata tool.

2. Paulina: Data Tools for the Public Domain

The session presents Paulina project, an initiative to create a global and multilingual search engine for works and authors in the public domain using Wikidata and Python. The main goals of the project are to create a friendly interface to discover authors, identify the copyright status of a work in different jurisdictions, access public domain works from Wikisource and/or other sites, and invite users to improve information about the public domain on Wikidata.

An alpha version of the tool is available at: https://paulina.toolforge.org/ At this moment, the tool already allows to search authors, look for their works, identify the copyright status and access the work if available.

Recognizing that there are already other tools based on Wikidata that facilitate knowledge and access to cultural works, such as Crotos, OpenArtBrowser or Inventaire, among others, this project focuses on: - identifying the copyright/public domain status of works of any kind, - encouraging editors and institutions to improve the information about the public domain on Wikidata, - helping to shape best practices for modeling data related to the public domain in Wikidata.

Beyond the launch of this tool, the project aims to facilitate the creation of national, regional or thematic implementations, according to the needs of each community. The code repository is available with a FLOSS license at: https://gitlab.wikimedia.org/toolforge-repos/paulina

The objective of the session is to show the preliminary version of the tool and seek collaborations with people and institutions.

3. Teaching a Wikidata Project Curriculum

The path from a dataset to a successful Wikidata project is not always clear. Over the past two years Will Kent from Wiki Education has been developing a curriculum that is based on Wikidata project work. Geared toward individuals who have a dataset in mind, this curriculum connects participants to tools, resources, and workflows that demystify project implementation. It is our hope that attendees will leave this situation with a better grasp on project workflows, relevant community practices, and the various resources that exist to support Wikidata projects.

Facilitators/Speakers: Paula Durán, Giovanna Fontenelle, Tove Ørsted Time block: Morning Beginning: 10:30
Location: 411 Duration: 45 min
Description:

In this session, you will learn about two different approaches for developing cultural heritage activities in Wikimedia affiliates.

Do-evaluate-redo: Practical evaluation methodologies for Opening up Culture and Heritage. Seminar for cultural institutions.

During 2023, the Culture Program from Wikimedia Colombia has been constructing a training program on the Wikimedia Ecosystem for individuals associated with Cultural and Heritage Institutions. This Seminare, named as Open up Culture and Heritage, is centered on sharing experiences on projects developed by the Wikimedia Community for collaborating with museums, archives and libraries which could be addressed as references for the processes through which we can make heritage collections from different institutions around the world, public, accessible and open. Additionally, the seminar included a project prototyping session, aiming to diagnose the needs and opportunities for engagement with specific cultural institutions by the creation of projects that link to the Wikimedia Ecosystem. Through the support and conversations held with the Wikimedia Foundation's GLAM team, the possibility/necessity of considering a contextualized evaluation approach emerged, enabling us to understand how these training processes can contribute to community growth. This experience will be the first pilot of a seminar model that aims to be applicable in different contexts and countries.

The proposed presentation will revolve around the analysis and presentation of results from this initial approach, focusing on three key aspects: experiences shared by the event's organizers, experiences recounted from the perspective of the participating individuals, and finally, experiences from the jointly designed evaluation methodology between Wikimedia Colombia and the Culture and Heritage team of the Wikimedia Foundation.

2. Theory of Change for culture & heritage activities at AvoinGLAM

AvoinGLAM presents our Theory of Change which we have started to work on during the autumn of 2023 to negotiate, express and justify our activities in the Open Access to Cultural Heritage space and within the Wikimedia movement locally, thematically and globally.

We will relate our work to strategies in Open Access to cultural heritage: Open Culture at Creative Commons, Wikimedia Strategy, the redefinition of the Open Definition in the Open Knowledge Network, Open Knowledge Finland’s strategy, and our perspectives on Global Languages, Art & Memory.

The Theory of Change is intended to crystallize our objectives and outcomes, and to make the impact of our work clearly articulated. Through the work we also wish to contribute to a shared understanding of the impact of the culture & heritage work as well as the needs to achieve our goals. We should look at the whole Wikimedia apparatus from a GLAM perspective.

The format is a presentation, but we would like to see it as food for thought for a broader discussion.

Facilitators/Speakers: Jocelyn Miyara Time block: Afternoon Beginning: 16:00
Location: 110-111 Duration: 1 hr
Description:

Public domain works give us a wealth of content that we can reuse, remix, and create new art and content. WIth a supply of Public Domain art, some printed slogans, messages and words related to Open Access, and other crafting supplies we will help you to create your own Open Culture propaganda. During this workshop, we will talk about how to remix and properly credit public domain works, while also allowing you to use your own creativity to promote better sharing of GLAM collections. You may use some suggested messages or create your own. Some themes you might think about promoting in your propaganda include:

Open Culture…

  • enriches research, education and learning to solve the world’s biggest problems
  • enlivens arts, culture and creativity to help us live richer lives
  • promotes diversity, inclusivity and equity to sustain democratic and resilient societies
  • propels institutions into the digital world to ensure their continued relevance, mission alignment and service orientation

Together we’ll brainstorm some catch-phrases to promote Open Culture and then use our favorites to create your own mini - poster.

Participants will take away a unique piece of art that they created promoting Open Culture (or Open GLAM), and an understanding of how the works from the public domain can be reused and properly cited.

Facilitators/Speakers: Gastón Santos, Angie Cervellera Time block: Afternoon Beginning: 16:00
Location: 410 Duration: 1 hr
Description:

In 2021, a group of museum volunteers in collaboration with Wikimedia Argentina designed a booklet on editing Wikipedia. This pedagogic material explored how the way of understanding museums mission has been changing through the years, resulting on a more collaborative and close to communitys knowledge production process. This idea of a dynamic heritage and participative culture promoted volunteer's conversation on how Wikipedia could help achieve this new horizons, resulting in the booklet.

This session proposes the presentation of the booklet by Angie Cervellera, the Culture and Open Knowledge manager, and Gaston Santos, volunteer of the project and communication professional in Luis Perlotti Sculpture Museum of Buenos Aires. Angie will present the main topics involved in this booklet and Gaston the main learnings and challenges on being a newcomer Wikipedian. Both will deliver a workshop on how to edit museum contents (heritage, artists) on the encyclopedia, going through some examples and recommendations.

Participants will learn about general aspects of museums and Wikipedia synergy; how to successfully engage volunteers on this task; what are the best practices when editing Wikipedia for the first time; how is the editing process and which are the sources museums can provide.

In this talk, you will hear from:

1. Archivo Inundación (Flood Archive): Constructing a free photographic and audiovisual repository in the framework of the twentieth anniversary of the 2003 flood in the city of Santa Fe, Argentina.

The April 2003 flood in the city of Santa Fe (Argentina) is one of the country's major water disasters and the largest in the history of the provincial capital. It affected a third of its population, much of it from low-income and under-represented communities. However, the Wikipedia entry has incomplete and outdated information, and the repository created on Wikimedia Commons contained no photographic or audiovisual records prior to 2013.

Archivo Inundación (Flood Archive) is a proposal for the collaborative construction of a free and open documentary repository on Wikimedia Commons. It is composed of unpublished photographs and audiovisual pieces, flyers and writings, produced during 2003 and the following years, by people who suffered from the flood, activist collectives, civil society organisations, research groups, workers and volunteers during the emergency period, among others.

Archivo Inundación seeks to decentralise knowledge in Wikimedia projects, including documentary sources on underrepresented topics. At the same time, it is proposed as a possible approach for the collaborative construction of open repositories of historical catastrophes, with a respectful approach that avoids re-victimisation.

This presentation includes a proposal for continuity to fill content gaps in Wikimedia projects, working with educational and GLAM institutions in the city of Santa Fe and the region. This second stage includes alliances, travelling exhibitions, training workshops, talks and other strategies to strengthen the network of collaborations formed and consolidated throughout the first stage.

3. GLAM Wiki as a resource for promoting the dissemination and appreciation of community archives and social movements

In this communication we will address the potential of the GLAM initiative to promote the appreciation of Community archives and Social Movements. Through the GLAM initiative, it is possible to disseminate collections and generate greater social participation in the eligibility of what may constitute documentary heritage, encouraging preservation actions and promoting the dissemination of knowledge. GLAM initiatives give communities and social movements the opportunity to document their history and disseminate their collections. It is a tool that allows different subjects to elaborate and make public their own perspectives of organizational memory. GLAM can be a great ally in raising awareness of the social importance of archives and for democratizing the participation of people that ensures diversity of race, gender and regionality in the production of knowledge, in the elaboration and selection of what constitutes heritage.

Logo GLAM Wiki Conference 2023 ID: 2304 Wikidocumentaries for collaboration
Facilitators/Speakers: Tuukka Hastrup Time block: Morning Beginning: 11:15
Location: 410 Duration: 45 min
Description:

Wikidocumentaries is a website that anyone can use to navigate Wikimedia content in a visual way. It brings together data, images and texts related to any topic based on connections through Wikidata. Materials from connected external media repositories are displayed together with Wikimedia content, and they can be showcased in many ways, for example as photo collections, maps and graphs.

We invite collaboration to integrate Wikidocumentaries with other Wikimedia and GLAM projects. For some years already, Wikidocumentaries displays upload banners on pages about items in the Finnish and the Indian Wiki Loves Monuments contests. This practice requires that the cultural heritage designations have been added to Wikidata.

This year we have worked with Structured Data on Commons as part of the Google Summer of Code program. Wikidocumentaries now makes it possible for anyone to select and upload suitable images from external media repositories to Wikimedia Commons. The workflow places the image in the correct Commons category and adds some basic Structured Data on Commons statements. This functionality was implemented by our GSoC intern Zexi Gong and it integrates with the Finnish national aggregator Finna. The workflow can be extended to more cultural heritage repositories with public APIs.

Faceted browsing and filtering of Commons images based on SDC statements was enabled by Tuukka Hastrup.

Wikidocumentaries started with the aim to also serve knowledge from the margins. Such information isn’t always in the scope of the more established Wikimedia projects, but Wikidocumentaries can fetch such data from other Wikibases in addition to Wikidata and visualize all the data together. This gives e.g. heritage communities an opportunity to overlay and aggregate their data with that of Wikimedia projects. One direction planned with our partners is to develop and deploy password-protected Wikibases that would allow a heritage community to share or protect assets at will.

We wish to propose Wikidocumentaries as a platform for collaborative reuse scenarios. With that in mind, we invite the participants to identify potential opportunities for collaboration as well as blocker issues. This is also an opportunity to discuss media reuse scenarios within the Wikimedia projects more generally.

1. Every book its reader: a global Wikimedia campaign

Presents the Every Book its reader campaign and its results. The campaign was organized in 2023 by librarians from different countries to promote the improvement of content about books in Wikimedia projects

2. Addressing Institutional Knowledge Gaps with Wikipedia: Native American Women Activists Editathon

There is a lack of information in Penn State Libraries-provided material about the Native Americans on whose lands various Penn State University campuses sit. A group of librarians, faculty, staff, and students came together to use Wikipedia to create action around improving the information available and organization of the information to our users, and how we collect and present this information. One of the ways that the team decided on to both address the institutional gap and contribute to public knowledge of the peoples Penn State land sits on, was through editing Wikipedia. The team collaborated closely with history faculty to coordinate the now yearly Native American Women Activists Wikipedia Editathon which is planned in celebration of Women's History Month in the United States. The team planned the editathon, coordinated Wikipedia training for students shared best practices for writing about Indigenous people, and taught students how to find, read, and use sources. This lightning talk will share how we coordinated this event, developed learning objects for students, and identified indigenous activists.

3. GLAM residencies

Let's organize an international residency program for GLAM advocates around the world! The residencies could invite Open Access advocates across organizational, country and language borders to join. The hosts could be openness organizations, cultural organizations, human rights organizations, research or preservation projects and so forth. We could even create centers where one could apply for a residency. Who might be interested in supporting this kind of activities?

In this session, you will learn about the following experiences:

1. Building a national GLAM-Wiki program: Challenges and Opportunities | Perspectives from DPLA

The Digital Public Library of America is a national aggregator of cultural heritage metadata in the United States, and it has a Wikimedia initiative that is one of the most successful in the world. With almost 4 million uploads from over 300 member institutions since 2020, DPLA is currently one of the largest Commons contributors (with media files and structured data) and the main US institution providing support for GLAMs that want to share their collections on Wikimedia. This project engages a range of institutions, from small, under-resourced libraries all the way up to the largest institutions in the country, and empowers them to participate in the Wikimedia movement.

In 2022, by expanding its Wikimedia initiative, DPLA launched a Wikimedia Working Group in which several institutions are participating (National Archives and Records Administration, Boston Public Library, Harvard Library, National Agricultural Library, among others). The objective is to work together on Wikimedia-related activities as well as spread the word about the support DPLA provides to US institutions to contribute to Wikimedia.

In this session, we will provide background information on the challenges faced by cultural institutions in engaging with Wikipedia projects, and how we designed an approach designed to meet the needs of our participating institutions. Following that, we intend to have some working group members sharing their experiences (Jamie Flood, Senior Wikipedian and Outreach Specialist, National Agricultural Library might join), as well as have some US-based institutions participants to share their experiences as GLAM institutions in North America (JJ Dearborn, Data Manager, Biodiversity Heritage Library has been invited to participate).

We intend to inspire and guide participants to replicate this experience in their own communities, countries, or region—therefore, even though this session shares a North American experience, it will be of use to practitioners globally.

2. Digitization of the Ovidio Lagos Fond

The presentation will be about the work carried out between Wikimedia Argentina and the National Academy of History in 2022, with the "Ovidio Lagos Fond" belonging to the latter institution, which has been worked together since it was received as a donation. The work carried out consisted of conservation, classification, description and digitizatio. The entire process will be explained, the tools used and how it was uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, as well as future plans with Wikisource. Previously a booklet was made with this work: https://w.wiki/77L8

3. Diversity of GLAM Wiki projects in South Asia

In recent years, South Asia has emerged as a vibrant hub for cultural preservation and knowledge dissemination through GLAM-Wiki campaigns. These initiatives bridge the gap between traditional cultural institutions and the digital age, using Wikimedia projects like Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata to democratize access to cultural resources and promote collaboration. These campaigns cover diverse topics, from art and science to indigenous knowledge. Collaborative efforts between GLAM institutions, Wikimedia affiliates, and volunteers include edit-a-thons and workshops, enhancing cultural heritage visibility and fostering shared responsibility. Despite challenges like copyright issues and resource constraints, South Asian GLAM-Wiki campaigns, driven by resilience and passion, continue to thrive. They exemplify the region's commitment to cultural preservation, diversity celebration, and open access to knowledge. As South Asia's GLAM sector evolves, its global impact on cultural preservation and dissemination is set to grow. I will try take 15 mins to highlight all major South Asia Glam-Wiki Campagians who are promoting a diversity of projects/campaigns and content.

4. Transforming Nigerian Libraries and Librarians through Wikis: Unleashing the Potential of Open GLAM

In this session, you will learn about:

1. Told Cities project: Reinventing built heritage documentation

Told Cities is a project by Wiki World Heritage UG, for the documentation of World Heritage cities through a creative approach, in terms of: 1-Content: The project consists of the creation of a wiki-based website that provides thorough documentation of many tangible and intangible aspects of WH cities (buildings, streets, sound, arts, people, etc.), the website gives access to this information through +500 interactive maps, timelines, and graphs, generated from Wikidata, for +100 cities. 2-Stakeholders: The project is being implemented in collaboration with Heritage NGOs, with a focus on countries without Wikimedia affiliates. 3-Activities: The project is being implemented through a series of training of trainers for volunteers in the target countries, this is in order to equip the locals with the necessary skills to implement the wiki campaigns themselves (editathons, photography contests) and catalyze the creation of new Wikimedia communities in these countries. The session will give a presentation of the project, but most importantly will discuss the reasons behind developing it in this specific format and how it responds to heritage professionals' needs. The goal of presenting Told Cities as a case study is to open the discussion on how to make Wikimedia platforms and tools more accessible to heritage professionals.

2. Indigenous knowledge, epistemic decolonization and the power of images: a GLAM photographic journey into the world of sacred plants from the Peruvian Amazon region

Ikaros are magical songs used by traditional healers in the Peruvian Amazon to summon spirits, activate an object or to weave the energetic threads of life of a patient. Ikaros are taught by plant spirits and learned by healers during prolonged periods of restricted diet and isolation. Some of these teacher plants are Ayahuasca, Tobacco and Coca. This type of knowledge has been and is still threatened by other worldviews that see them as sinful practices, backward traditions and quackery.

WikiAcción Peru 's first GLAM project with Takiwasi Center in Tarapoto resulted in the liberation of more than 1200 images related to traditional medicine from the northern Amazon of Peru. Through this short photographic journey, we propose a reflection on how South American indigenous knowledge is sometimes persecuted, appropriated, conserved and restituted.

As the results of this process are relevant to communities in Peru beyond the ones that read and edit Wikipedia, I will present the museographic proposal for an itinerant exhibition to be implemented in Cusco in 2024 based on this presentation and the GLAM project. The exhibition’s objectives are not only to mobilize knowledge related to indigenous knowledge but also about the Wikimedia movement and Glam projects in Peru.

Facilitators/Speakers: Susanna Ånäs Time block: Morning Beginning: 9:30
Location: 411 Duration: 1 hr
Description:

Wiki Loves Living Heritage is a wiki initiative that pays tribute to the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. We invite heritage communities, Wikimedia volunteers, safeguarding organizations and authorities around the world to document and share Living Heritage together.

The Wiki Loves Living Heritage Bazaar brings together Wikimedia contributors and affiliates with authorities and organizations maintaining intangible cultural heritage inventories to make further activities together. It can also be a roundtable for Wikimedia contributors to identify opportunities the project provides. The format and composition of the Bazaar can change according to the events and circumstances where it is held.

Wiki Loves Living Heritage is designed to be a one-off campaign that lasts for one year. At the time of the conference the project will be ending. However, many collaborations are starting, and an event like this can be the forum where it is possible to envision the sustained support for incorporating living heritage to Wikimedia projects.
