Goal[edit]

The Arhives of Republic of Macedonia (DARM) is the first institution in Macedonia which accept Wikipedian in Residence, in the three summer months in 2015. The management of the Archives wants to continue this activity as they understand the public needs for wide access to the files with history value. Therefor I was kindly asked to be Wikipedian in Residence in DARM in the period of 12 months in 2016. Although the letter of intend is signed for 12 months, I decided to split on six months period. The Archives management is willing to collaborate with Wikimedia projects at this point.

DARM will provide office, desc and internet access. Also, will provide the person (Archives employee) who will collaborate with WiR and provide Wikipedian in Residence with all materials. Only item WiR will need is the computer. DARM will also release the staff members several hours a day to get a part in workshops.

The goal of this activity is to work with GLAM staff and serve as a liaison between the Archives and the Wikimedia community. Educating the GLAM employees on Wikimedia projects, on how to upload files on Commons, which are release for public domain, as well on how to create new articles or improve the existing ones, using the books and materials from the Archives, is one of the goals. In this very moment, one female employee in the Archives is Wikipedian, educated in the project WikiWomen Macedonia. I will be responsible for coordinating and organizing special events, such as edith-a-thons, Wikipedian tours, which will bring Wikipedians on-site to work with staff on content creation and improvement. To host a contest and thematic editing weeks is a very important goal, because the volunteers will have a chance to incorporate uploaded materials into articles.

Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Starting on 4th of January 2016, till 30th of June 2016, the activities will be as this:

  • Create category on Commons to have all uploaded files in one place
  • Be at the office every working day, and spread the word about Wikimedia projects to the GLAM employees
  • Collaborate with the staff from the Archives on a regular basis
  • Train the GLAM employees to use Wikipedia and to create articles
  • Upload the files on Commons
  • Encourage the volunteers to create new articles based on the materials from the Archives and to improve the existing articles with text, files, photos
  • Hold an edit-a-thons, thematic editing weeks and Wikipedian tour in the Archives
  • Coordinate a contest to encourage volunteers to use uploaded files in the articles
  • Write the weekly WiR diary

Impact[edit]

Target readership[edit]

  • mk.wikiedia.org
  • bg.wikipedia.org
  • sr.wikipedia.org
  • all other language Wikimedia projects which could find the files useful.

Fit with strategy[edit]

What crucial thing will the project try to change or benefit in the Wikimedia movement? Please select the Wikimedia strategic priority(ies) that your project most directly aims to impact and explain how your project fits. Most projects fit all strategic priorites. However, we would like project managers to focus their efforts on impacting 1-2 strategic priorities. Examples of strategic priorities can be found at here.

  • To make strong partnership with the Archives
  • To spread the word about Wikimedia projects at GLAM institutions
  • To educate new editors from a target group - GLAM employees
  • To increase accessibility to reliable sources for editors
  • To coordinate an events, such as edit-a-thons and contest, which will bring Wikipedians on-site to work with staff on content creation and improvement

Measures of success[edit]

Please provide a list of both quantitative and qualitative criteria that will be used determine how successful the project is. You will need to report on the success of the project according to these measures after the project is completed. See the PEG Program Resources for suggested measures of success. Note: In addition to your project-specific measures of success, you will also be asked to report on some Global Metrics at the end of your final report. Please keep this in mind as you plan, and we'll support you as you begin your project.

  • at least 3000 uploaded files after 6 months
  • at least 300 improved and/or new articles after 6 months, made by GLAM employees and other Wikipedians
  • at least 10% of uploaded files used in new or existing articles

Resources and risks[edit]

Resources[edit]

I am Violetova and I have been part of many projects till now. Wikipedian in Residence will be my first designate of this type. Most of the activities as WiR, I will carry out with my cyrillic username: Виолетова. My first focus will be the documents about ASNOM period of Macedonian history. It was suggestion from DARM. After ASNOM, I will work with WW I materials and documents. At the moment, I do not know the number of documents on each subject.

Risks[edit]

The risk could be to not achieved a goal of 300 new or improved articles, because of lack of interest in Wikipedian community. That is why I am going to create an events, such as edit-a-thons and contests, in order to encourage the volunteers to use the uploaded files in the articles. No other risk could happen.

Budget[edit]

The compensation is to cover living costs of Wikipedian in Residence while on this duty.
The lap-top is needed as working item on daily base for WiR at the Archives office. It is not practical to move desc-top computer. I intend to continue as WiR in DARM after the first 6 months, partly because the letter of intend from DARM is signed for 12 months for me, and finally because the Archives are willing to release around 20,000 documents. So, the laptop will be still in use for Wikimedia projects long after the first six months.

DARM will provide office, desc, internet access, and the person who will collaborate with WiR and provide Wikipedian in Residence with all materials.
