DCW Half-Yearly Strategic Budget Plan
- Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)
Local
- Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.
- R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.
- 1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.
Deoband Community Wikimedia is a user-group which is both new and small. It tries to document underrepresented Islamic scholarship on Wikipedia and its sister projects. In our Bhopal Photo Event which received a fund support from the WMF, we learned that the community should get itself registered legally. The legal status of anything has a meaning. It helps in creating a good impact. DCW volunteers also learnt that the legal status helps a lot in creating local collaborations. In order to solve such problems, a space that could serve as DCW's office is required. This would also help us in our future events. We can easily do all the events at the office. Besides that we find it difficult to call our volunteers from far off places to gather at a specific place (hotel perhaps) and space therein doesn't allow doing the events with ease and gaining access to better venues is more costly.
- 2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
Our approaches to the problems are thus: 1: Getting a rented accommodation to serve as DCW office and venue for all future events. 2: Getting DCW subsequently registered legally. 3: A six-monthly research study. 4: Website for the affiliate
As stated in the above response, legal status means a lot, and given the current political chaos it does mean something. In such a situation, getting DCW legally registered would be helpful and accommodation is necessary for it. Nonetheless, the accommodation itself is helpful in doing events and it would help us avoid paying hefty charges. Research study will help us understand the scale of issues and problems and determine possible solutions to overcome these problems in future.
- 3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
Subject to the approaches stated above, we would want to rent an flat for a renewable period (11 months agreement is generally done here) which would easily allow us to organise events and meetups. Our active volunteers will meet at the office on timely basis to discuss and execute the plans of the affiliate. The office would also serve as a offline training place for local people who are interested in contributing to the project.
Secondly, we would be trying to make local collaborations with academic institutions. We also have plans to make our volunteers contribute on Wikiquote projects but sadly no good training material exists in Urdu and Arabic languages for Wikiquote. DCW would try to address this issue as well. The website can be used to propagate the aims, goals, and also relevant material easily.
- 4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.
Other
- Themes related to Deoband Community Wikimedia.
- 5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?
Yes, Deoband Community Wikimedia.
- 6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.
Language, Other global topics for impact (topics considered to be of global importance), Cultural background, ethnicity, religion, racial
- 6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.
Thematic topics are often covered less. DCW has a theme that spreads throughout the globe. The systematic bias exists there in the matter of coverage about South Asian scholars and academics of last century. DCW tries to lessen this gap and promotes writing and improving WMF projects related to its focus.
- 7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.
Education
- 8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?
Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Linguistic / Language
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?
DCW's target is the students and graduates of Islamic seminaries (thematic, related to DCW's theme) at a global level. As of now, we are trying to work locally and develop our base before we can move on. DCW collaborated with Yoruba Wikimedians User Group and helped to transfer knowledge into a different language. We look forward doing such more collaborations with local, regional and international affiliates and organizations. DCW engages through social media and remains in touch with its members, and tries to bring more people in. Following any sort of contests, DCW feels compliments work best, and we will use compliments as far as possible to keep the community alive and growing.
- 10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?
We will adhere strictly to the Wikimedia friendly space policy and UCOC all through the project activities.
- 11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.
This has been discussed with the group members on our offline chat groups and calls.

- Yes
- 12.2 How will this joint proposal allow you to have better results?
- joint proposals don't work for this one.
- 13. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedia partners to implement this proposal? Required.
Yes
- 13.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.
As indicated above, we are looking forward to engage with Islamic institutions that can help us in addressing the gap. We can easily spread awareness with their help.
- 14. In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select a maximum of THREE options that most apply.
Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement, Invest in Skills and Leadership Development, Innovate in Free Knowledge, Evaluate, Iterate, and Adapt
