Part 1: Project and impact

[edit]

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

As outlined in our September 2023 - February 2024 activity plan, we regularly hosted DCW Conversation Hour. The subjects touched from September 2023 to March 2024 as a part of this program include:

In September 2023, we conducted the second iteration of our Deoband Yoruba Collaborative Project which resulted in creation and improvement of 99 articles on Urdu and Yoruba language Wikipedias. Subsequently, Wikidata Sprint was organised from 28 to 30 October 2023 to celebrate the eleventh anniversery of Wikidata with a thematic edit-a-thon and Wiki Club Jamia was established on the 30th of October 2023 as a part of our leadership development program.

Participants of the Wikimedia Primer workshop

Wikimedia Primer was organised on 15 November 2023 helping the new Wikimedians at Wiki Club Jamia explore basics of the Wikimedia ecosystem. Live editing was demonstrated, and over 20 students joined the offline event at the Department of English, Jamia Millia Islamia. Wikiquote Insights was conducted on 28 December 2023 in New Delhi. Participants learned how to edit Wikiquote in both English and Urdu and gained an understanding of the basics of notability on the Wikiquote projects.

In order to sustain our Heritage Lens initiative, we conducted two iterations in December 2023 and March 2024, offering fellowships that included travel and local logistics support. The two iterations brought over 200 images to Wikimedia Commons under a free license from two distinct areas: Kashmir and Delhi.

In November 2023, we initiated the 500 edit challenge at Wiki Club Jamia to enhance member retention and engage research scholars, particularly by encouraging them to utilize the Wikipedia Library. This activity resulted in the addition of over 198 images to Wikimedia Commons and improvements to more than 176 pages. According to Event Metrics, the pages improved receive an average of 144.1K daily views. We also organised the first edition of Wiki Loves Muslim Academia from January 15 and February 16, 2024 focusing on Indic Wikis only.

You can also share links to:

Some of the articles created and improved include:

Wiki Club Jamia 15 November 2023 workshop

We have been the using EventMetrics tool to help us track contributions. The success of Wiki Loves Muslim Academia 2024 fell short of our expectations. Although, it received a good reception, such as this and this and with over 18 people signing up as participants, this contest resulted in the creation and improvement of only 37 articles across Wikis. The possible challenges most likely relate to the outreach process and having an active, robust team that solely focuses on a specific aspect of the activity. This prompted us to shift our focus towards capacity development.

Additionally, share the materials and resources that you used in the implementation of your project. (required)

For example:

  • Training materials and guides
  • Presentations and slides
  • Work processes and plans
  • Any other materials your team has created or adapted and can be shared with others

The program was motivated by our strategic trajectory and the term's activity plan. Our conversation hour presentations have provided valuable insights:

3. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with this Rapid Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals. Required. Select one option per question. (required)

A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Strongly agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Agree
G. Increased participants' feelings of belonging and connection to the movement Strongly agree
F. Other (optional)

Part 2: Learning

[edit]

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: We hope to learn about diversity of content and information related to DCW's theme, through passionate young volunteers, and how better we can support them in continuing their works for the upliftment of Wikimedia's goals.

Evaluate, Iterate and Adapt - has been our core principle throughout our activities, and whilst executing this plan alongside our Leadership Development and Skills Infrastructure Program, we learned that it is necessary to develop capacities first before venturing into governance and structure related discussions. This learning helped us navigate the issue of including more students in the ecosystem. We initiated Wiki club discourses, which subsequently enabled us to support the establishment of Wiki Club Jamia, currently connecting more than 80 students. In the future, we look forward to utilizing this discourse to establish/form more Wiki clubs in minority institutions.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

Our targeted initiatives, such as Heritage Lens and DCW Conversation Hour , have yielded positive experiences, while organizing the Wiki Loves Muslim Academia 2024 did not yield the expected success for us. We learned from this that it is necessary to advocate for capacity development, outreach and other organisational facets of organising contest that transcend beyond a single language project.

It was pleasantly surprising to find the LinkedIn platform extremely helpful. Our use of it for inviting people to our conversation hours and workshops has been extremely beneficial. A good academic community uses the platform, and our learnings indicate that such platforms could often not only help in outreach but also help build external partnerships.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

We have used event spaces such as Train The Trainer Kochi 2023 to share our learnings with the wider Indic community. Guided by our principles of Evaluation, Iteration, and Adaptation, we have already incorporated these learnings into our activities. Our activity plan for Deoband Community Wikimedia/Activity plans/Half-Yearly Strategic plan for April 2024 - September 2024 is based on these learnings.

Yes, an amount of INR 39950.7 has remained underspent. Given the diverse nature of activities that we organised during this period, we were able to save these funds from several lines. For example, the budget for Heritage Lens iterations was not as high as we had expected. Similarly, we were able to save certain funds from unforeseen/misc budget lines.

A. Propose to use the underspent funds within this Fund period with PO approval

13.3. Please provide details of hope to spend these funds.
