In the realm of cultural heritage and historical preservation, a significant challenge exists regarding the visibility and representation of Edo history, culture, and traditional belief systems on Wikipedia. Despite the profound cultural significance of the Edo period, encompassing traditional customs, belief systems, arts, crafts, and more, its historical narrative remains obscured and notably underrepresented on Wikipedia. This lack of representation poses a threat to the preservation of Edo knowledge, hindering open access and appreciation of Edo heritage. This is a cause for concern, as it could potentially lead erosion of cultural identity and the loss of invaluable insights into a pivotal era in human history.
While the first edition of the Edo History Write-a-thon resulted in the creation and improvement of over 200 Edo-related Wikipedia articles, there still exists a substantial content gap in the global encyclopedia, particularly concerning the traditional governance, festivals, folklores, arts, and crafts of the Edo people, who mainly consist of the Binis (Edos), Esan, Etsako (Afemai), Owan, Akoko Edo, Auchi, and Ijaws.
This campaign is therefore organized to help address the content and contributor gaps in Wikipedia, with respect to Edo History and Culture. The project will employ a multi-faceted approach, integrating online and in-person components to generate diverse Edo-related content on Wikipedia. The overarching goal is to foster a more accurate, comprehensive, and inclusive representation of Edo history and culture on a global encyclopedia. As part of the approached to be adopted in this project, the organizers will build capacity of members of the academic community at the University of Benin so that they can contribute high quality Edo related content to Wikipedia.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
The outlined activities for this project encompass the following:
- 1. Capacity Building (Training) for Lecturers and Students at the University of Benin: To equip participants with the necessary skills for contributing high-quality content to Wikipedia, a series of online and one in-person training sessions will be conducted. These sessions aim to enhance the participants' understanding of the intricacies involved in contributing to Wikipedia effectively.
- 2. Write-a-thon: As the primary focus of this project is content creation, two closely monitored in-person write-a-thons will be organized. These events are designed to facilitate the generation of diverse Edo-related content on Wikipedia, addressing the existing content gap in the global encyclopedia.
- 3. List Building: To ensure that the campaign results in the creation and improvement of notable and relevant articles, the project organizers will compile a list of pertinent Edo-related topics. This curated list will serve as a guide during the write-a-thon, aiding participants in selecting and contributing to topics that align with the project's objectives.
- 4. Tracking and Monitoring of Participants' Contributions: Utilizing the outreachdashboard, the project's core organizers will systematically track and monitor the activities of editors. This strategic approach aims to ensure that the project attains its desired goals by overseeing and evaluating the contributions of participants throughout the campaign.
- 8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
