Folk cultures, characterized by their diverse customs and traditions, serve as a vibrant reflection of communities worldwide. Yet, within these cultural narratives, women's roles as storytellers, artists, and contributors have often been underrepresented. To rectify this historical bias, the global campaign, 'Feminism and Folklore,' emerges as an international writing contest held on Wikipedia, dedicated to documenting folk cultures and women's narratives in folklore. This initiative functions as a bridge between the traditional and contemporary, shedding light on the often-overlooked role of women in the enduring narrative of human tradition.

The core objectives of this project are to amplify women's contributions and unveil the richness of Nigerian folklore and culture. Our aim is to bridge the gender gap by ensuring the comprehensive documentation, representation, and celebration of Women and Queer personalities in Nigerian folklore, folk culture (folk artists, folk dancers, folk singers, folk musicians, folk game athletes, women in mythology, women warriors in folklore, witches and witch hunting, fairy tales and more) on Wikipedia, while also documenting and spotlighting the broader narratives of Nigerian folklore(folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, folk activities, folk games, folk cuisine, folk wear, fairy tales, folk plays, folk arts, folk religion, mythology). Through these efforts, we seek to contribute to a more inclusive and equitable representation of cultural heritage, women's experiences, and Nigerian folklore on Wikipedia.

The challenges we seek to address within this project are multifaceted, encompassing the historical underrepresentation of women and queer personalities in Nigerian folklore, the ongoing struggle against gender inequality in cultural heritage, the imperative to preserve traditional Nigerian folklore, the need for broader access to documentation, and the rectification of biases and gaps in folklore.

The project's goal is to empower and document the narratives of Women in Folklore and Folk Cultures in Nigeria, fostering a more inclusive and equitable representation of cultural heritage and experiences on Wikipedia. Furthermore, the project is committed to translating these articles into Igbo and Yoruba languages, ensuring wider accessibility and preserving these cultural traditions for future generations.

To accomplish these objectives, we employ two primary approaches:

1)Awareness and Advocacy: Through a multifaceted approach involving public talks, social media campaigns, and media engagement, we aim to raise awareness and advocate for diverse representation. This includes showcasing the positive impact of Women in Folklore and Folk Cultures in Nigeria. Our mission is to encourage wider participation, in alignment with our goal of amplifying the narratives and contributions of women within these cultural realms.

2)Training and Edit-a-thon: Our strategy includes a series of engaging activities such as editing campaigns, workshops, physical and online training sessions, and edit-a-thons. Through these initiatives, we empower both new and experienced editors to create high-quality Wikipedia articles highlighting the achievements of Women in Folklore and Folk Cultures in Nigeria. This ensures that their valuable contributions are accessible to a wider public on Wikipedia, aligning with our goal of amplifying underrepresented perspectives and promoting equitable representation in cultural heritage.

Through this project, we aim to engage and train individuals, including women in our local communities, as well as new and existing Wikimedian editors, in the art of creating, enhancing, and translating Wikipedia articles about Women in Nigerian Folklore and Nigerian Folklore into Igbo and Yoruba languages. By meticulously documenting their contributions, stories, and experiences, we seek to ensure the appropriate recognition, preservation, and documentation of these significant aspects of our cultural heritage. This endeavor will play a vital role in bridging the content gap and ensuring that these narratives, often overlooked, find their rightful place in the digital world.

Following the successful implementation of this project, we expect a significant impact on the representation of women in folklore and Nigerian folklore on Wikipedia. It will contribute to a more balanced, accurate, and inclusive portrayal of women in Folklore and the rich tapestry of Nigerian folklore. Enriching Wikipedia's content with these essential narratives will foster a deeper understanding of cultural heritage.

This multi-platform approach will ensure that we reach a wide audience and generate interest in the event.

2)Training and Edit-a-thon Sessions: This activity will involve a series of engaging workshops and sessions designed to educate and train participants, including both new and experienced Wikimedian editors, in the art of creating and improving Wikipedia articles about women in folklore and Nigerian folklore. The edit a thon session will provide hands-on experience, enabling participants to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge required to effectively contribute to Wikipedia articles.
