6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Funtua, a bustling city in Katsina State, is where we're launching this project. Our mission is to fix the inequality on Wikipedia! Up in Northern Nigeria, not many women get involved in things like editing Wikipedia. That's why most Wikipedia editors in this area are men.

Our big plan is to change that by getting more women into Wikipedia editing. We'll teach them how to make articles better, especially on the Hausa Wikipedia. There are lots of amazing women from Northern Nigeria and all over the country who don't have articles on Wikipedia. Our project is all about giving these women the spotlight they deserve by creating and improving their articles on the Hausa Wikipedia.

Imagine a Wikipedia where women's stories and achievements shine just as bright as men's. That's what we're working towards!"

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The project is set to unfold over the course of four days, with a combination of online and in-person activities that embody its essence. The first two days will be dedicated to online training sessions, a precursor to the subsequent physical training. Our intention during this project is to actively engage participants, guiding them through the account creation process and offering personalized assistance as they establish their accounts.

A pivotal highlight of the project comprises two days of in-person events. The inaugural day will witness an immersive workshop experience, while the second day will be dedicated to an exhilarating Edit-a-thon. The latter event holds a unique purpose: to collaboratively craft and refine articles on Hausa Wikipedia, shining a spotlight on women's narratives.

Towards the culmination, I will steer the ship with finesse through the last round of online events, which will encompass the conclusive phase and a dignified closing ceremony. To ensure ample opportunity for hands-on application, a week's interval will ensue after the final physical training before the ultimate online event. This intermission will be a window for participants to actively contribute to Hausa Wikipedia, buoyed by our assistance as we navigate their queries through a dedicated WhatsApp group.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

The project is designed to unfold over a span of four days, encompassing a blend of online and in-person activities that exemplify its core essence. The project team is comprised of dedicated individuals, each contributing their unique strengths and expertise to ensure the project's success.

Leading the endeavor is A Salisu, who serves as the project lead, spearheading the initiative's overall direction and coordination. Assisting in the project's execution is Hauwau Sulaiman, who brings her valuable insights and expertise to the role of project facilitator.

Guiding and mentoring the team is Yusuf Sa'adu, an experienced Wikimedian who brings a wealth of knowledge to the table. Notably, he is not only the project's trainer, both in the offline and online realms, but also serves as a mentor, providing guidance and support to further elevate the project's impact.

Additionally, Gwanki plays a pivotal role as the project's advisor. With a wealth of experience and a keen understanding of the project's objectives, Gwanki's insights will help shape the project's course. Moreover, he will actively contribute by facilitating during the online training sessions, enriching the participants' learning experience.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

The participants we're aiming to reach are primarily women residing in Funtua town, many of whom are students and academics. We plan to involve them from various educational institutions such as Funtua Community College of Health Science and Technology, Institute of Quranic Education Funtua, School of Basic and Remedial Studies (SBRS), and Aminu Kano College of Education Funtua.

Our main communication channels will be through phone calls and WhatsApp groups to keep them informed. Once the event takes place, I'll continue to stay in touch with the participants via a dedicated WhatsApp group that I'll create specifically for this project.

At the end of the project i hope to learn:

  • Gender Gap Reduction: A primary objective is to determine whether the project succeeded in reducing the gender gap in Funtua's Wikipedia editing community. This involves comparing the number of new women editors before and after the project, as well as the ratio of contributions from women to men.
  • Enhanced Women's Content: By tracking the creation and improvement of articles related to notable women in Hausa Wikipedia, you can ascertain if the project effectively improved the representation of women's achievements and stories on the platform.
  • Community Strengthening: The project's impact on the Wikimedia Community of Funtua can be assessed by measuring increased engagement, participation, and collaboration among its members. This can include tracking the number of community events, discussions, and collaborative editing efforts.
  • Hausa Wikipedia Views: Monitoring the change in viewership of Hausa Wikipedia can help determine whether the project's efforts led to a noticeable increase in readership. This could be an indication of improved content quality and relevance.
