6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

As most of our developing communities are facing challenges in accessing internet due to expensiveness of the bundles and therefore they are not able to pay for internet access Also reliability of internet in most areas is not well accessible due to poor infrustructures especially in remote areas. We will introduce Kiwix tool as offline web browser launched to allow offline access to contents such as Wikidata, Wikibook and youtube videos. Our target is to reach most of the students in Tanzania schools especially young girls due to lack of their involvement in Wikipedia projects which will reduce gender Gap. We will install Kiwix to their local pc and they will be able to access Wikipedia project offline.

Week 1:

  • Conducting online training with some of experienced Wikimedians from Tanzania how to install and use Kiwix.
  • Organizing physical gathering with Trainers on practical use of Kiwix
  • Conducting assessment with trainers on understanding of Kiwix

Week 2:

  • School visit and identifying the available resources
  • Conducting assessment on how the access content online
  • Identifying challenges which are facing in accessing content online
  • Brief introduction on Kiwix Program to particular organization

Week 3:

  • Identifying the curriculum available in Tanzania School
  • Collaborating with teachers to identify relevant content
  • Assessing websites available for relevant content
  • Researching on available website related to Tanzania curriculum

Week 4:

  • Identifying the available resources ready for installation
  • Identifying the compatibility of software with the available Computers
  • Conducting a training on how to install Kiwix to teachers and IT expert

Week 5:

  • Installation of Kiwix to the particular school
  • Assessing Software compatibilty after installation
  • Begin monitoring and evaluation process.

Week 6:

  • Conducting a training with teachers and students on how to use Kiwix
  • Identifying technical challenges and provide ongoing support.
  • Documenting the success of the program

  • Identifying additional sites to be added to Kiwix offline reader
  • Converting the available content into a format to be accessed offline
  • Exploring more schools to expand the use of Kiwix

Pellagia Njau(Project Coordinator): A Wikimedian volunteer from Tanzania and Kiwix Mentor to make sure that the training will be conducted well by training the students. Mr. Magongo: An IT expert to oversee all activities which will be conducted in computer lab and providing a support in any related IT support Alex Method: Experienced Wikimedian who will be training students on installation of Kiwix and how to use it.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

The targeted participants are female students and educators from schools. As the project aims to teach students especially young girls about Kiwix program by training Wikipedia mentees and some of their teachers. The method which will be used is;

1. Training experienced Wikipedians and new editors about Kiwix whom they will be mentors to students.
2. Outreach to schools and inform them about the project and its goals.
3. Organizing events and initiatives that bring together participants, experts, and pre University students to discuss the project.

During the activities, participants will receive ongoing mentorship and support to ensure that they are able to deliver well the given knowledge to students. The project will also provide training sessions, both in person and online, to ensure that participants have the necessary skills and knowledge to about Kiwix. After the activities, the project will follow up with participants through surveys, focus groups, and interviews to gather feedback on their experience and to assess the impact of the project. Additionally, the project will work with schools to integrate Wikipedia into the curriculum, which will provide ongoing opportunities for students to know more about Wikipedia projects.

Also it will be impactful in determining how young girls are involved in Wikipedia projects which will reduce gender gap and later on they will use Kiwix as a tool to access content.
