1. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.

Outreach Campaign at Hyderabad National Book Fair - 2024-25 by TWUG

2. and 3. Proposed start and end dates for the proposal.

2024-11-01 - 2025-02-15

4. Where will this proposal be implemented? (required)

India

5. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign, project, or event? If so, please select the relevant project or campaign. (required)

Other (please specify) Spreading the concept and philosophy of Telugu Wikipedia to reach the common people

6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

During 2021 - 2024, Telugu Wikipedia has seen tremendous growth in terms of new articles. The number of new articles increased 307% over that of 2017-20 period. But, intriguingly, the new user registrations during the same period was only 49% of the previous forur years' number.

When the same statistics are observed for 2017-20 over the 2013-16 - the new articles count was only 63%, while new users count was 127% over the previous period.

Clearly, the user base growth is very low in comparison with the number of articles growth. There is a need to take the concept of Wikipedia further into the people.

Challenges: Many Telugu people access English Wikipedia for knowledge. The reasons are -

1. They do not know the existence of Telugu Wikipedia 2. They do not see as much information on Tewiki articles as it is there in Enwiki 3. The awareness about anybody-can-edit-Wikipedia is too low amongst the readers 4. Many elders, who want to contribiute, still do not have Telugu typing tools enabled in their devices hence cannot type in Telugu To overcome these challenges, We propose to - 1. Conduct focussed Campaigns to reach communities like teachers, retired citizens, homemakers, University students etc 2. Provide training on the editing tools and editing on mobile devices 3. Engage people to make minor edits and see them going live immediately. Instead of pushing them to create an account, we want them to do a few anonymous edits and see the same going live instantly. Once they get the hang of it, we encourage them to create an account and start editing regularly. A follow-up activity is also planned for the same. 4. Create a group for the new editors and encourage mutual interaction and sustain the editing activities through Wikiprojects, Editathons etc. 5. To widen the article base on Telugu Wikipedia with a focus towards local content. During 2023-24 Tewiki has started working in this direction. New Editors will be encouraged to participate in the relevant Wikiprojects

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Hyderabad National Book Fair is an annual event, organised by Hyderabad Book Fair society. This 11-day event is held during December - January months every year. Various book sellers from across India participate in the event. 800,000 to 1,000,000 book lovers visit the event every year. These knowledge seekers are the target audience for our campaign.

We planned the following activities at the book fair:

1. Set up a Telugu Wikipedia booth at the Book Fair with the arrangements like banners, posters, computers, handbook, pamphlets etc 2. The booth will be manned by wikipedians experienced both in editing Wikipedia as well as in outreach activities 3. Booth attendants will explain about Wikipedia and its main concepts. Interested visitors will participate in live editing sessions. 4. These editing sessions will be conducted everyday at the Booth to introduce Wiki editing to the visitors. 5. Visitors interested in further engagement with Wikipedia will register themselves at the Booth. These visitors will be future prospects for Wikipedia editing 5. Conduct quick quiz sessions for the visitors and give away small tokens of appreciation 6. One 2-hour event at the Central stage of the book fair, will be organized to celebrate 100,000 articles of Tewiki. We are planning to invite a community influencer to this event.

Visitors will be encouraged to register themselves for future engagement with Wikipedia. 2. nEnipuDu vikiipIDiyannu (I am a Wikipedian now): Those who are aware of Tewiki, Tewikisource etc., will be encouraged to create their Tewiki account and start editing their User page. They will be encouraged to participate in the Tewiki Badi (Tewiki School) online training classes that are conducted every Sunday at 2 PM to know more about editing. 3. Senior Wikipedians, who have achieved fame through Wikipedia like An-Article-A-Day for 6 consecutive years, 3 years, for 2 years etc, will be introduced to the visitors who talk about their experiences. 4. We expect to engage a minimum of 5 persons per day for an in depth engagement with the project who are likely to convert to be editors in due course
