Main Proposal[edit]

1. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.

Tyap Community Rapid Grant Proposal June 2023

2. and 3. Proposed start and end dates for the proposal.

2023-09-01 - 2023-10-29

4. Where will this proposal be implemented? (required)

Nigeria

5. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign, project, or event? If so, please select the relevant project or campaign. (required)

Other (please specify) We plan on hosting two collaborative programs:

1. Joint editing between the Wikimedians of Romania and Moldova and the Tyap Wikimedians User Group, in September 2023, to edit Wikipedia articles by creating items about the Tyap-speaking people and the Romanian-speaking people on both Tyap and Romanian Wikipedias.
2. A Wikimedia training and recruitment exercise in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria, in October 2023 -- in collaboration with the Wikimedians of Nigeria User Group. This is aimed at retraining our existing organizers and recruiting new editors, training them on how to edit Wikimedia projects like Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata.
6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

The challenges we are trying to solve through these double collaborative events being proposed are:

1. Redundancy: We have been operating in-house events since the very genesis of our user group. It is high time that members of the user group, especially the organizers, hear someone from outside speak to challenge them and bring out the bests in them. In this, they could gain editing and organizing skills to grow our young community.
2. Isolation: We do not want to operate in isolation while we have other Wikimedia user groups around whom we could share knowledge and experience or get the same from them. This caused the initiation of collaboration both within and outside our country with other Wikimedia user groups.
3. Old Way of Doing Things: We thought of doing things a bit differently to compare results with our previous events we had between 2021 and 2022 by collaborating and undertaking a little campaign rally as part of the events, especially the one to be done at the university.
4. Stagnation: By going to a new vicinity to host an event, we hope to gather a new community and create an editing hub of Tyap Wikimedians on the campus -- our first purpose-driven hub. This is to increase the activities in our existing projects, the Tyap Wikipedia and Wiktionary.
5. Lack of Exposure: Our collaborative work would expose our editors to certain perspectives they never envisaged were possible. They would be the ones to testify at the end of the day.
7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

1. Editing together in Tyap, Romanian, and English (1-29 September 2023): https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Editing_together_in_Tyap,_Romanian,_and_English

2. Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria Outreach - Tyap Wikimedia UG in Collaboration with Wikimedia Nigeria (1-29 October 2023): https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ABU_Zaria_Outreach

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. His role is to source for us the person(s) from the WM Nigeria UG who could help train our organizers in the Tyap WMUG, and new participants.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

We have two events to host:

1. For the September event, the target communities are the Romanian and Moldovan Wikimedia Community, and the Tyap Wikimedia Community.

On how we intend to reach out before and during the activities, we are using these tools:

  • Community-based arrangement: Since we may not need many people in the team, both sides would select a few number of editors to participate in the edit-a-thon. Nevertheless, the call would still be open to others who want to join in the exercise.
  • Social media: Our social media handles on Facebook, WhatsApp and Telegram are sufficient.
  • MetaWiki: We have a page created already for the event, which would be further developed before the event.

On follow up after the activities, we may not necessarily need to follow up parse, since it is a collaborative work between two groups over a limited period of time. However, we shall maintain contacts through a common Telegram group for both editing communities to communicate on a common ground: https://t.me/+5zZhrguUbpBiYWI8 .

2. For the October event, the target community is the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria Tyap speaking community of students and staff.

On how we intend to reach out, we are using these tools:

  • Word of mouth: We are compiling a list of expected participants who we our Communications and Advocacy Officer shall begin to call, as the time nears. We are also making moves to speak to the Atyap Student Community leader to mobilize students for us to attend the activities in person.
  • Social media: Our social media handles on Facebook, WhatsApp and Telegram are sufficient to invite and communicate steps of editing through, to our participants.
  • MetaWiki: We have a page created already for the event, which would be further developed before the event.

On follow up after the activities, we are actually out to create an editing hub of Tyap speakers for the Tyap WMUG in the campus. Hence, we shall maintain contact with whosever shall emerge as the hub-leader. He/she would get some of the literary materials and extra gifts left to gift to outstanding editors after the activities. We shall also have some data packages bought for the members of the new community over the next one month as an incentive for the newcomers. Afterwards, we shall continue communicating via our normal social media handles and calls.
