Grant Proposal[edit]

M. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.

Wacken Open Air 2023 photo pass participation

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

My aim is providing Wikimedia projects with photographic material from one of Europe's leading heavy metal festivals, happening on August 2-5, 2023 in Wacken, Germany. After I began with concert photography, I noticed many artists either had no photos for their Wikipedia biographies / other Wikimedia project pages / Wikidata items or those photos were outdated - some reached as far back as 2009 to represent the most recent (!) image of the artists. Festivals are a unique opportunity to capture many artists in one event - my August photo pass to the Sopot Festival resulted in 64 individual artist categories on Commons populated with pictures from three days - and therefore provide better return on the invested resources.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

I am one of four people that German Wikipedia is seeking accreditation for, as part of their Festivalsommer programme, however Wikimedia Deutschalnd cannot reimburse a non-German citizen. Accreditation will be confirmed a few weeks before the actual event but this is someting external and not dependent on either myself or the Festivalsommer coordinator. Usually up to four accreditations were possible for this particular event. The accreditation is the only question mark in this project, depending on external factors. This is the only course of action to be adopted.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Upon receiving the accreditation, I will travel to the festival grounds a day before, set up my accomodation (camping area is provided) and coordinate with the other accredited Wikimedians for the stages and shows each of us will be photographing. I am bringing my Nikon D3200 and a Sigma 70-200 f/2,8 lens. As part of the grant, I would also like to rent a Sigma 20-70mm f/2,8 lens to be used for wider shots, like the whole band / stage setup. Photos will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons within 10 days of my return home and linkable in articles / pages / Wikidata items on the bands as well as those of individual band members. Gear photos are also a possibility, for regognized makers and/or models of guitars, basses, drumkits, etc. - applicable as possible to be photographed.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Not applicable

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

As mentioned abpve and at https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Festivalsommer/Festivalplan_2023 there are other three photographers who are seeking accreditation for Wacken Open Air 2023. Svema, Moiyeah, and Huhu Uet are volunteers of German Wikipedia and have been participating in other festivals within the Festivalsommer programme.

6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Not applicable

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Culture, heritage or GLAM

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Not applicable

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

I have received confirmation from the Festivalsommer coordinator for Wacken Open Air that my name will be included in the accreditation portal. I will coordinate my onsite activities with the other accredited photographers to provide for maximum coverage for the event spread across all our group members. The Festivalsommer is an ongoing initiative, so future collaborations are also a possibility.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

All other participants are long-standing Wikimedians, so level of participation and cooperation can be expected to run high. As for physical safety, the festival organisers claim Wacken Open Air to be a very safe event in its size and category.

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.

Since this is a one-person grant, I have been contacting only the people responsible for the Festivalsommer initiative.

12. Are you aware of other Rapid Fund proposals in your local group, community, or region that are being submitted and that align with your proposed project?

Yes

If yes:

12.1 Did you explore the possibility of doing a joint proposal with other leaders in your group?
No
12.2 How will this joint proposal allow you to have better results?
The Polish Wikimedia chapter microgrant project is not able to cover this grant amount.
13. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedia partners to implement this proposal? Required.

No

13.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.

14. In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select a maximum of THREE options that most apply.

None of the above

Learning, Sharing, and Evaluation[edit]

15. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?

I want to learn better how to work efficiently to cover the photographing of a major-scale musical event. The festival hosts 4 stages and close to 200 bands across four festival days (the final roster for 2023 is not complete yet, band number based on previous events).

16. Based on these learning questions, what is the information or data you need to collect to answer these questions? Please register this information (as metric description) in the following spaces provided.

Counting the photo uploads to Wikimedia Commons, either with a common category for all my photos or by tallying the numbers from the individual artist categories (since categorising by artist per photographer is a standard with the Festivalsommer initiative).
