Usam Danfodio University Sokoto (UDUS) is a public research university located in the city of Sokoto, north western Part of Nigeria. It is one of the initial twelve universities founded in Nigeria by the federal government in 1975. It has fifteen faculties and offers various academic programs in arts, sciences, engineering, health, law, and social sciences².

The aim of this project is to increase the awareness and participation of UDUS students, staff, and faculty in Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. The project will also contribute to the improvement and creation of Wikipedia articles related to UDUS, Sokoto, and Nigeria in general.

The main challenges or problems that this project is trying to solve are:

  • The low level of awareness and understanding of Wikipedia and its sister projects among the UDUS community.
  • The lack of local and relevant content on Wikipedia about UDUS, Sokoto, and Nigeria.
  • The underrepresentation and marginalization of Nigerian languages and cultures on Wikipedia.
7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Planned Activities:

1. As part of our planned activities, we envision organizing one-day trips within the school premises, targeting classrooms and offices to introduce Wikipedia. This immersive initiative aims to engage the university community through face-to-face interactions. Throughout the trips, our team will distribute informative flyers and facilitate direct discussions about Wikipedia, fostering a personal and interactive approach to raise awareness. This on-the-ground strategy seeks to complement the formal training sessions, ensuring a broader reach and encouraging active participation in the Wikimedia initiative at Usam Danfodio University Sokoto.
2. Pre-Training Online Session:
  • Objective: Engage participants and introduce them to the project.
  • Details: A one-day online session to familiarize participants with the project goals, expectations, and key concepts.
3. 2 Days Online Training:
  • Objective: Provide comprehensive knowledge about Wikipedia and its editing processes.
  • Details: In-depth online training sessions covering various aspects of Wikipedia editing, including account creation, content contribution, and best practices.
4. 2 Days Offline Trainings:
  • Objective: Hands-on training for participants within the university premises.
  • Details: Physical training sessions conducted on campus, guiding participants through the practical steps of creating accounts and contributing to Wikipedia. This includes interactive workshops and collaborative editing sessions.
5. Post-Training Online Meeting:
- Objective: Assess understanding and address any queries or challenges.
- Details: A final online meeting to follow up with participants, providing a platform to share experiences, clarify doubts, and reinforce key concepts learned during the training.
6. Documentation and Reporting:
  • Objective: Track progress and outcomes for project evaluation.
  • Details: Ongoing documentation of activities and outcomes, including regular reporting on participant engagement and contributions.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Our team consists of four experienced and passionate Wikimedia contributors who are committed to raising awareness and participation in Hausa Wikipedia at Usman Danfodio University Sokoto (UDUS). Our team members are:

  • Yusuf Sa'adu (User:Yusuf Sa'adu), the project lead. He is a sysop at Hausa Wikipedia and a graduate of Hausa language. I have also participated in several Wikimedia events and campaigns since 2021. I will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and reporting the project activities.
  • Hamza DK (User:Hamza DK), the project facilitator and account creation lead. He is an experienced editor at Hausa Wikipedia and has been involved in many Wikimedia projects in Northern Nigeria. He will be in charge of facilitating the training sessions, creating accounts for the participants, and providing technical support.
  • Hauwau Sulaiman (User:Hauwau sulaiman), the project facilitator and women engagement lead. She is a student at Federal College of Education Zaria and an author of Hausa novels. She is one of the female experience editors in Hausa community and has facilitated the successful project of Funtua WomenWiki Initiative, which trained and mentored over 40 women to edit Hausa Wikipedia. She will be focusing on engaging and empowering women editors in this project.
  • Abubakar Kaddi (User:Abubakar Kaddi), the project facilitator and UDUS liaison. He is a student of UDUS and a Sokoto city resident. He became an active editor at Hausa Wikipedia after participating in our previous project of Wikimedia Awareness in Federal University Gusau. He will be the main contact person for the UDUS students and staff and will be responsible for engaging the participants before, during, and after the project.
  • Gwanki (User:Gwanki), the project’s online trainer and adviser. He is a sysop editor at Hausa Wikipedia and has been an active editor for a decade with thousands of contributions to Hausa Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. He has a lot of experience in organising many Wikimedia projects in Northern Nigeria. He will be providing online training and guidance to the participants and the team throughout the project.

We also have another facilitator who is a student of UDUS and one of the leaders of the student unions. He is not a Wikimedian yet, but he has shown interest and support for our project. He will help us with facilitating and engaging the participants, especially the student community, as he has a good understanding of the role and responsibilities of a student union leader.

All of our team members are volunteers and are not affiliated with any Wikimedia group or organization. We have informed them about their involvement in the project and they have confirmed their availability. We believe that our team has the skills, experience, and enthusiasm to successfully execute this project and contribute to the growth and diversity of Hausa Wikipedia.

Learning and metrics[edit]

17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

The project aims to evaluate the success of a comprehensive training strategy that combines online and offline sessions to enhance participants' familiarity and involvement with Wikipedia at UDUS. The project will meet the specific need of raising awareness and participation in Hausa Wikipedia, which is one of the underrepresented languages on the platform. The project's objectives are:

  • To track participant retention and encourage sustained contributions to Hausa Wikipedia
  • To foster gender inclusivity and empower women editors through targeted efforts
  • To assess collaborative engagement with the university and establish long-term partnerships
  • To gather feedback from participants and identify areas for improvement
  • To refine documentation and reporting processes and contribute to knowledge sharing

The project will measure the immediate and lasting impact of the training on participants' Wikipedia-related skills and contributions, as well as the level of institutional collaboration and involvement in Wikimedia initiatives within the university community. The project will also gauge the success of gender-specific engagement and address the gender gap on Hausa Wikipedia.

The project will collect feedback from participants through post-training assessments and online meetings, which will play a crucial role in improving the project's quality and effectiveness. The project will also document and report its progress and outcomes, refining its communication strategies and sharing its best practices and lessons learned with the wider Wikimedia community.

The project will not only enhance the Wikipedia-related skills of participants but also contribute to the establishment of a vibrant and enduring culture of knowledge-sharing and contribution within the academic environment of UDUS. The project will also increase the visibility and diversity of Hausa Wikipedia and promote its use as a reliable source of information and education.
