Wiki and Health articles in Nigeria

5. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign, project, or event? If so, please select the relevant project or campaign. (required)

Other (please specify) Wikimedia training, knowledge gap

6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

According to UNICEF “preventable or treatable infectious diseases such as malaria, pneumonia, diarrhoea, measles and HIV/AIDS account for more than 70% of the estimated one million under-five deaths in Nigeria.” However, these infectious diseases have low readability and visibility on Wikipedia and its sister project.

Another report by the WHO says that nearly ten percent of newborn deaths in the world last year occurred in Nigeria. The persistent rate of avoidable deaths in Nigeria is deeply disturbing and despite this, they have little coverage on Wikimedia platforms.

Also, a 2014 study that examined 97 Wikipedia articles about complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) found that 4% of them had attained "Good article" status and that CAM articles on Wikipedia tend to be significantly shorter than those about conventional therapies.

This project aims to create awareness and bridge the knowledge gap of health content in Nigeria. This will lead to a higher rate of youth involvement in health advocacy, bridge the existing content gap on Wikipedia and Wikidata, and increase the number of well-informed youths actively engaged in fighting preventable diseases in their communities.

Main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes:

Physical and Virtual Trainings: The participants will be trained to identify and create notable and qualitative articles. Most of the health articles peculiar to Nigeria are stubs. They have low readability and are without images. The participants would be trained on how to successfully contribute to them, new editors will take up this task to keep them occupied and showcase their learning skills. However, the editing will be closely monitored to avoid vandalism. Weekly training will also be included in the project to review the quality of edits contributed during the project

Edit-a-thon: To prevent vandalism and tampering with articles, only experienced editors will be allowed to create new articles and this will be under close monitoring.

Translate-a-thon: with the help of facilitators from both the Hausa and Yoruba communities, the articles related to health in Nigeria will be translated into the two languages by the editors.

WPWP: After training editors on how to upload on Common, Pictures will be uploaded on Common and pages on Wikipedia without images will be fixed.

Feedback: Google forms would be created to generate feedback from the participants and their perception towards the Campaign in the form of a survey

This approach is designed to cater for the specific needs of the community. Establishing a community of medical editors in Nigeria is integral to our strategy. Taoheedah, an active and prominent Yoruba Wikipedia editor who has contributed to a lot of Wikimedia campaigns, will serve as a facilitator for both online and offline sessions. This partnership with the Yoruba User group, through Taoheedah, will aid in project execution and the ongoing sustenance of the community. Additionally, the creation of a WhatsApp group for new medical editors in Nigeria will further facilitate collaboration. Participants will be trained to contribute effectively to various Wikimedia projects covered in the training. This includes tasks such as creating Wikipedia accounts, understanding core content policies, grasping general editing principles, creating new articles, and making minor edits. These skills will enable them to enhance content related to individuals, places, organizations, and more. To ensure progress and provide assistance, we will utilize the outreach dashboard. This tool will help us track contributions and offer one-on-one support to offline and online editors, further promoting engagement and fruitful participation.

Due to the sensitivity of health topics on Wikipedia, here are plans to mitigate challenges such as tampering with articles.

1. Only experienced editors will create new articles and this will be under close monitoring while new editors will upload pictures and translate to their local languages.
2. Experienced editors will write articles on 'draft' and will only move the articles to the main space after a thorough review by the facilitators
3. Doc James, A chair and founder of Wiki Project Medicine will serve as an advisor and help review newly created articles weekly alongside other facilitators. As a physician and a Wikipedia medical editor with 10 years of experience, he will help confirm the reliability and accuracy of the contents added as well.
3. The MEDR guide will be shared from time to time for experienced editors to peruse during the project.

These plans will help mitigate and prevent tampering of articles thereby ensuring the originality and quality of the articles created, improved and translated are premium.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The project will run for one month. Wiki and Health articles in Nigeria will consist of six different sessions:

1. Two days of an in-person (physical) workshop: Since the training involves contributing to health articles in Nigeria in Nigeria which needed the right guidelines and training to avoid vandalism. There will be two-day in-person workshops aimed to provide participants with a foundational understanding of Wikipedia, Wikidata, and the Commons Wiki. During the training, the participants would be exposed to both general and specific notability guidelines, sourcing for reliable references, writing from an objective point of view etc. This would be done by three facilitators.
2. Two (2) series of online reinforcement training: To adequately provide the participants with the necessary knowledge and abilities for editing on Wikipedia, Wikicommons, etc. One online facilitator will use the online portions to polish the new editors' flaws and improve their editing abilities.
3. Edit-a-thon:. After the two days of in-person training and the two days of online instruction, there will be a two-week time for the participants to edit and put their newly acquired knowledge into practice.
4. Review and award presentation: After the edit-a-thon, three days will be used for the review session. The Edit-a-thon winners would be awarded with gift vouchers.

The timeline of the project has been uploaded in Question 7 above.
