Wikipedia Kilimanjaro is a thriving Wikipedia community situated in the Kilimanjaro region, and it has been growing rapidly. Currently, the community comprises 44 dedicated volunteers who contribute to Wikipedia in various ways. However, it's worth noting that, among these dedicated volunteers, not a single individual possesses photography skills or actively engages in photography-related activities. Furthermore, since the inception of Wikipedia Kilimanjaro, there have been no workshops or training sessions conducted to enhance the knowledge and skills of community members regarding photography. The primary objective of this proposal is to actively participate in the Wiki Loves Africa campaign, a continental photography contest that encourages the capture and sharing of images that depict the diverse cultures, landscapes, and heritage of Africa. This provides us with an opportunity to contribute to this larger initiative by capturing photographs of the unique habitats and iconic tourist attractions located in the Kilimanjaro region. By doing so, we aim to showcase the natural beauty, cultural richness, and historical significance of our region to the world through the lens of our community.

Additionally, this proposal seeks to address the current lack of photography expertise within our Wikipedia Kilimanjaro community. We plan to organize workshops and training sessions on photography, equipping our volunteers with the necessary skills to become proficient photographers. This training will not only enable us to actively participate in the Wiki Loves Africa campaign but also prepare us for various upcoming photography-related campaigns and events. We believe that fostering photography skills within our community will enhance our ability to document the beauty and heritage of Kilimanjaro more effectively, attracting a wider audience to our region and its unique offerings.

To achieve this there are some strategies we have Community Capacity Building: Our first strategy involves strengthening the capacity of the Wikipedia Kilimanjar community, primarily by recruiting individuals who are passionate about photogr achieve this, we will actively seek out and engage volunteers with genuine inter photography. These dedicated individuals will form the foundation of our efforts for our community's photography expertise.

Photography and Wiki Commons Workshops: Simultaneously, we recognize the importance of equipping our volunteers with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in photography. To realize this goal, we will organize a comprehensive series of photography events and workshops. These events will serve a dual purpose: enhancing the photography skills of our existing members and attracting volunteers who are interested in photography and Wiki Commons projects. Through workshops, we aim to empower individuals to confidently contribute their photography expertise to our initiatives.

Highlighting African Creativity: The theme of the 2024 competition, "Africa Create," is a powerful platform for celebrating and highlighting the multifaceted creativity of Africans. We aspire to encourage photographers to capture the myriad ways in which Africans express their creativity, be it through art, culture, innovation, or any other avenue. By doing so, we aim to portray Africa as a continent of unceasing innovation and progress. Our strategy involves organizing a series of engaging photo walks in various locations across the Kilimanjaro region. These excursions will enable us to capture the vibrant stories of the lives, people, and breathtaking natural landscapes in this region. These visual narratives will further emphasize the creativity and diversity that define Africa.

Improving Access to Information and Promoting Digital Literacy and Collaboration: In line with our commitment to enhancing access to information and promoting digital literacy, we have devised a strategy to achieve these aims. Our dedicated volunteers will be given the opportunity to upload the media content they capture during the photo walks. This content will not only serve as a valuable resource but will also document captivating stories and scenes from the Kilimanjaro region. This, in turn, will significantly expand the volume of information available online about Africa. It will provide a more comprehensive insight into African culture, history, and contemporary life. Additionally, our efforts will create opportunities for individuals across Africa to develop digital photography and editing skills. This boost in digital literacy will be an invaluable asset for our community, as it promotes collaboration and active participation in Wikimedia projects, fostering a sense of shared ownership and engagement.
