Other (please specify) Creating awareness about Wikimedia projects, Training Wikimedia editors, Improve content about Keana on Wikipedia.

6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Keana is the largest population city of Alago tribe in Nigeria and also one of the local government area in Nasarawa State. The city had the population of 80,000 as at the 2006 population census. Keana is the home of salt due to the presence of salt-rich lake, in addition to having Federal Government Girls College, Government Special School, General Hospital, Filling Stations, Primary Health Care Center and a host of other institutions spread across its community. But unfortunately, despite the prominent places in the community, there is lack of active contributors and a deficiency in educational programs or resources aimed at developing and supporting individuals who wish to contribute to Wikimedia projects in the community.

As a corp member serving in the community who is lucky to have discovered Wikipedia, I feel obliged to premier the first Wikimedia training in Keana for the overall ascendancy of new editors as well as raising and inspiring the emergence of active champions of the Wikipedia projects. The creation of Wikipedia and its sister's project awareness In Keana is targeted towards laying a solid foundation for the widespread adoption and use of Wikimedia products among youths in the community.

Also, the proposed month-long activity has the potential to bridge the content gaps that exist about Keana local history, cultural practices, landmarks, and notable personalities that are not adequately represented on Wikipedia with the help of experienced editors. By training corp members serving in the community, this will lead to active contribution in documenting and preserving its local content, making it accessible to a wider audience.

Unlike other communities where there has been a series of training and presence of the Wikimedia community, there has never been any training which could expose people to Wikimedia projects and how they can contribute to them in Keana. If approved, the project will help to establish the first ever Wiki community meetup in Keana, raise awareness about the importance of open knowledge and encourage participants to contribute to the Wikimedia community by addressing topics with limited coverage or representation.

The main approaches to tackle the challenges and change;

Training and Recruiting 55 new editors who are serving in Keana as corp members: This will allow full participation within the target community Many of the participants may be familiar with English Wikipedia but few are aware of other existing languages such as Yoruba and Hausa. The dominant language in the community is Hausa, as such, the Wikipedia training project will give focus to Hausa Wikipedia, as well as other Wikimedia sister projects that promote free knowledge and open access to information, thereby enhancing the need for this approach.

Training participants on how to contribute to the various Wikimedia projects that the training focuses on; create Wikipedia account, understand the core content policies, and understand general editing principles, creating new articles, performing minor edits among others to improve content about people, places, organizations, etc.

Creating a community of Wikimedia Editors in Keana: One of the facilitators for the online sessions, Ibjaja005 is one of the active and most prominent Hausa wikipedia editor. I will partner with the Hausa User group through him to help in the execution of the project as well as in the creation and sustainability of the community. This is in addition to creating a WhatsApp group for the new editors.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The project will run for a period of one month to introduce Wikipedia to this community.

Wikipedia Training of National Youth Service Members in Keana will consist of five different sessions with the establishment of Wikimedia community;

1. Two day in-person (physical) workshop: With the help of three of the five facilitators to be engaged, the Two day physical session hope to avail the participants the basic knowledge about Wikipedia. This will also involve account creation and on-site minor edits by all the participants.
2. Two (2) series of online reinforcement training:

To properly equip them with the needed skills about how to edit on Wikipedia, Wikicommons, etc.

With the help of the online facilitators of the project, the online segment aimed at fine-tuning the editing skills of the new editors, as well polishing where they have much weaknesses.

3. One day of an in-person review session (final day): After the two day physical trainings as well as the two days online sessions, an interval of two weeks will be given for the participants to edit and practice the knowledge acquired from the project into fruition.

There will be a two weeks Edit-a-thon where winners will be awarded a certificate of excellence each; a WhatsApp group will be utilized to encourage them edit and attempt to questions arising from their newfound journey.

Thereafter a one-day physical training, as the last day of the project, will be convened with the purpose of reviewing the works of the participants, clarifying where necessary, entertaining questions and clarifications, and awarding certificates to wrap up the project.

Creating a group of Wikimedia editors in Keana: The last day of the project will see the creation of a community for sustainability purposes.

I will be working with other external, non-Wikimedia partners to implement this proposal. The partnership is largely on getting the right Participants for the project. We will partner with NYSC CLO, Keana local government Inspector, NYSC State Coordinator, Young African Leadership Initiative Nasarawa State Chapter for successful dissemination of information about the project to the target participants.
