Federal University Gusau, a federal government-owned university in Nigeria, established a decade ago, accommodates over 8,000 students. Situated in Gusau, the capital city of Zamfara State, it serves as a prominent hub for higher education. Our goal is to bring about change by increasing awareness, dispelling doubts, and encouraging participation in Wikimedia projects at Federal University Gusau. The main challenges we seek to address include a lack of awareness, doubts about accuracy, and low participation. To achieve this, our approaches include creating awareness through trips, sharing informative materials, and utilizing online platforms. We will provide training to equip participants with editing skills, improve local content, and foster a Wikimedia community through regular meetups and collaborative projects. These strategies aim to create a more informed and engaged Wikimedia community at the university.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
  • Awareness Trips within the School Premises:

Organize and conduct awareness trips within the school premises to reach a wide audience of students, faculty, and staff. Set up information booths or stands in prominent locations, such as libraries, common areas, or cafeterias, where you can engage with individuals and distribute informative flyers about Wikipedia and its sister projects. Use these trips as opportunities to initiate conversations, answer questions, and address any concerns or doubts regarding the accuracy and reliability of Wikipedia. This activity aims to spark interest, generate curiosity, and create a buzz about the upcoming training sessions.

  • Online Training:

Conduct two online training sessions using video conferencing platforms or e-learning platforms. These sessions can be structured as interactive webinars or virtual workshops. Cover essential topics such as navigating Wikipedia, understanding its editing interface, citation guidelines, and best practices for contributing to Wikimedia projects. Provide step-by-step demonstrations, offer hands-on exercises, and encourage active participation and discussion among participants. Online training sessions allow for flexibility and accessibility, enabling a wider reach and accommodating participants who may have scheduling constraints.

  • Offline Training:

Organize two offline training sessions as in-person workshops or seminars held within the university campus. Select suitable venues equipped with necessary resources like computers or projectors. Create engaging training materials, including handouts or presentation slides, to facilitate the learning process. Cover similar topics as the online training but with the advantage of providing face-to-face interactions, immediate feedback, and personalized guidance. Offline training sessions foster a sense of community and enable participants to build connections and networks among themselves.

  • Creating and Sharing Flyers:

Design informative and visually appealing flyers that highlight the benefits of Wikipedia, dispel myths or misconceptions, and promote the training sessions and Wikimedia community. Include key messages, event details, and contact information. Distribute the flyers during awareness trips, place them in strategic locations around the university, and encourage participants to share them with their peers. Flyers serve as a tangible and visually appealing reminder of the opportunities and resources available through Wikimedia projects.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

As an experienced Wikimedian who has organized and facilitated several Wikimedia events, Yusuf Sa'adu will play a crucial role as the project lead organizer. He will oversee the planning, coordination, and implementation of the project activities. Additionally, Yusuf Sa'adu will bring his expertise to lead some of the training sessions, sharing his knowledge and insights with the participants. His experience and familiarity with Wikimedia initiatives make him well-suited for guiding the project's overall direction and ensuring its success.

  • Abubakar Yusuf Gusau (Engagement lead): a resident of Gusau city and an experienced Wikimedian, will play a key role in engaging the targeted participants. As a local resident familiar with the community, Abubakar Yusuf Gusau brings a deep understanding of the region's dynamics and can effectively connect with the students and lecturers at Federal University Gusau. Their experience as a Wikimedian will enable them to communicate the value and opportunities offered by Wikimedia projects, generating interest and encouraging active participation among the targeted participants. Gusau's involvement will contribute to building a stronger and more inclusive Wikimedia community at the university.
  • Gwanki (Trainer - Online and Offline):

Gwanki, an experienced Sysop Editor at Hausa Wikipedia, will take on the role of the project's trainer for both online and offline sessions. With their expertise in Hausa Wikipedia and training experience, Gwanki will design and deliver engaging and informative training modules. They will ensure that participants gain the necessary skills, knowledge, and confidence to contribute effectively to Wikimedia projects. Gwanki's ability to conduct training sessions both online and offline will provide flexibility and accessibility, catering to different learning preferences and logistical constraints.

  • Additionally, we have another facilitator who is a student at Federal University Gusau and one of the leaders of the Student Union. While this facilitator is not yet registered with Wikipedia, their role is crucial in engaging the participants due to their familiarity with the university community. As a student leader, they have established connections and a deep understanding of the participants' needs and interests. We have already communicated with the office of the students affairs through this facilitator, ensuring their support and involvement in our project. Their active involvement will contribute to effective participant engagement, fostering a sense of belonging and encouraging active participation in the Wikimedia activities.
9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

The target participants for this project are the students and lecturers of Federal University Gusau. To engage them before and during the activities, we will use various communication channels, personally invite student organizations and faculty members, and share engaging content. During the activities, we will create a welcoming environment, encourage active participation, and provide hands-on exercises. Afterward, we will collect feedback, offer ongoing support through resources and online communities, and recognize participants' achievements. These strategies aim to foster a strong and engaged Wikimedia community at the university.
