The Iranian diaspora comprises about 7 million people, mainly residing in Europe. A lot of active editors for Persian Wikipedia live outside Iran ([1]). Many of these individuals, especially students, know more than just Persian and are eager to help with Persian Wikipedia. But it's tough to support them from within Iran due to limited funds from the foundation and the government's restrictions on Wikipedia. This is where the diaspora comes in. They're well-connected in Europe, part of various groups and organizations. We plan to hold workshops and edit-a-thons in different European cities. These events will teach them how to edit Wikipedia and other sister projects.
It's really important to get the diaspora involved. They speak different languages and are excited about editing. By bringing them together through these workshops and events, we're improving the Persian Wikipedia and making it more diverse and reflective of different cultures and experiences.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
We're organizing six workshops and edit-a-thons in major European cities between April and September. These cities—Amsterdam, Cologne, Hamburg, Istanbul, Paris, and Rome—have vibrant Iranian diaspora communities.
In each city, we're hosting a one-day event combining a workshop and edit-a-thon. These sessions will focus on topics related to the host country or topics aligned with participants' interests. It's a chance for everyone to learn and contribute while exploring themes that resonate with them or reflect the culture of the hosting city.
During our events, we'll have 2 or 3 experienced Wikimedians as speakers. They'll help and teach everyone at the workshops and edit-a-thons. These experienced folks know a lot about editing Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. They'll share their tips and tricks to make editing easier and better for everyone joining in. They'll be like guides, showing us the best ways to work on Wikipedia.
- 8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
User:Darafsh, user: Ladsgroup, and user:Arash.pt form the core team. However, we'll also rely on the support and knowledge of local users in each city to make our project successful.
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
Our main focus is the Iranian diaspora, but considering that Afghans also speak Persian, we're open to inviting them to our events. There's a sizable Afghan diaspora in Europe too, and they might find our gatherings beneficial as well.

- 10.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. (required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws. Learning and metrics
[edit]- 17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)
In this project, our primary goal is to understand the impact of involving Iranians abroad and potentially including Afghans in participation within Wikimedia. We're eager to explore how engaging these communities influences the level of involvement and contribution to Wikimedia projects. This understanding will provide valuable insights into the dynamics of community engagement and participation within the Wikimedia movement. We also want to know how encouraging Persian-speaking communities, like Iranians and Afghans, can make content in different languages on Wikimedia. By working with local people in each city, we want to understand how it makes events successful and gets more people involved.
