The Iranian diaspora user group is a group of Iranian volunteers who live outside of their home country. The size of the Iranian diaspora is estimated to be around 7 million, with most of them living in North America and Europe. This user group is dedicated to enriching Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects among the Iranian diaspora by spreading the ideas of free knowledge, for instance through educational lectures, training and editing workshops, and essay writing competitions.

Objectives[edit]

  • Promotion of Wikimedia projects and free content in general;
  • Outreach work in schools and universities with Iranian students and through social media to teach Iranians about Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects;
  • Edit-a-thons to help Wikipedians/Wikimedians to enrich content;
  • Participation in different cultural events such as Nowruz festivals in different countries;
  • Support Iranian diaspora contributors to build their community.

Proposed Activities[edit]

  • Organising thematic Wikimedia projects in different countries;
  • Organising edit-a-thons for students to edit Wikipedia in Iranian languages and in their host country's languages;
  • Participating in #1Lib1Ref campaign
  • Organising workshops in countries with a significant number of Iranians to promote Wikipedia.

History[edit]

The Iranian Wikimedians User Group was established in 2015 and acts as a user group in Iran, but due to the unique condition of Iran and its relationship with Western countries, it could not provide sufficient support to the Iranian diaspora; the only exception is an editing session for refugees in Vienna in 2017.

Due to the increasing size of thee Iranian diaspora in recent years and their dispersion in different parts of the world, it has become necessary to create a specific user group that could meet their needs.
