Research proposal[edit]

Description[edit]

Description of the proposed project, including aims and approach. Be sure to clearly state the problem, why it is important, why previous approaches (if any) have been insufficient, and your methods to address it.

It has been observed over some years now that scholars, particularly those from developing countries, Africa and Nigeria to be precise have been rated higher in the patronage of predatory journals and publishers (Ajuwon and Ajuwon, 2018; Xia et al., 2015; Tella, 2020; Tella, 2021). As a Nigerian scholar and researcher, I think something drastic needs to be done in terms of having a re-directional call to re-orientate colleagues on the need to patronise high impact reputable journals and publishers.

The Workshop: ""SCHOLARS' PATRONAGE OF PREDATORY JOURNALS AND PUBLISHERS: A CALL FOR REDIRECTION AND REORIENTATION TO PUBLISH IN HIGH IMPACT/REPUTABLE JOURNALS”

The aim of the research is to discourage patronage of predatory journals and publishers, redirect and re-orientate academics to publish in high impact/reputable journals. The objectives: i. Teach the participants on the rigour of conducting land-breaking research and getting published in high impact journals. ii. Expose the participants to the use online resources (Wikimedia, Wikipedia) and how they can be used to produce research papers. iii. Train the participants to develop skills to identify predatory journals and publishers, and develop contents publishable in journals or as addition to Wikimedia contents.

Approach/Method: Workshop

The workshop is considered important because it will reduce the rate of predatory journals/publishers’ patronage. The outcomes of the workshop will enable Nigerian academics to conduct rigorous, high quality research, which will increase the trust of academics elsewhere in Nigerian academics’ ability to conduct quality research. The long term effect of the workshop will be the removal of Nigerian academics from the list of countries that patronise predatory journals/publishers as reported in the literature. It will increase the use of Wikipedia and Wikimedia as online resource to advance research irrespective of discipline.

There has never been any previous approach in terms of workshop organised to discourage academics especially those who are in their early career from patronising predatory journals/publishers or guiding them to where they publish. Related workshops have focused how to get published, and not how to trained academics to develop skills to identify predatory journals and publishers. Just getting published is different from publishing in high impact journals and not predatory. This is the target of this proposed workshop.

Impact[edit]

Address the impact and relevance to the Wikimedia projects, including the degree to which the research will address the 2030 Wikimedia Strategic Direction and/or support the work of Wikimedia user groups, affiliates, and developer communities. If your work relates to knowledge gaps, please directly relate it to the knowledge gaps taxonomy.

The skills the participants are expected to develop at this workshop will contribute to the development of Wikimedia movements. These skills to identify predatory journals and publishers, conducting land-breaking research can also be transferred to other Wikimedia members who will not participate in the workshop but will be privy to the contents and knowledge of the workshop. This workshop will go along with the Wikimedia Nigeria and other 38 chapter affiliate, organisations and user groups.

Dissemination[edit]

Plans for dissemination.

Final report submitted to Wikimedia. Two or three journal articles which will be published in reputable national and international high impact peer reviewed journals, Conference paper presentations locally and internationally to share the knowledge produced. Outcomes from the project will be published in a book. Moreover, part of the contents of the outcomes of the research will be published as part of Wikimedia articles or contents.
