Description

[edit]

Description of the proposed project, including aims and approach. Be sure to clearly state the problem, why it is important, why previous approaches (if any) have been insufficient, and your methods to address it.

Participants:

Approximately 80 Practicing teachers in the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) Network- Australasia

Approximately 180 Primary and Secondary Preservice teachers at Flinders University

Approach:

1.Within a curriculum studies course at Flinders University, primary and secondary pre-service teachers are introduced to the many facets of Wikimedia and explore the potential applications for teaching.

2.Flinders University primary and secondary pre-service teachers engage in communities of practice and use pedagogical frameworks including Technology, Pedagogy, Content Knowledge (TPACK) and Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition (SAMR) to critically evaluate existing Wiki resources for teaching purposes.

3.Flinders University preservice teachers engage in collaborative communities of practice to critically and creatively develop a Wikimedia-based pedagogical practice.

4.Concurrently, experienced teachers engaged with the IB PYP Arts Network, based in Australia, will undertake guided exploration of Wikimedia applications and critically evaluate Wikimedia educational applications and tools for everyday classroom use

5.Practicing teachers engage in collaborative communities of practice (CoP) to critically and creatively develop Wikimedia-based modes of pedagogical practice.

6.Host a gallery walk for preservice teachers, a national online conference for teachers and undertake peer evaluation of products developed through the CoP.

Outcomes:

Wikimedia: development of Wikimedia contributions according to the participants pedagogical projects. This may include Wikibooks, Wikipedia, Wikiversity and MediaWiki

Impact

[edit]

Address the impact and relevance to the Wikimedia projects, including the degree to which the research will address the 2030 Wikimedia Strategic Direction and/or support the work of Wikimedia user groups, affiliates, and developer communities. If your work relates to knowledge gaps, please directly relate it to the knowledge gaps taxonomy.

Significance: The significance of the project is three-fold. Firstly, employs an innovative approach where practicing teachers across Australia and pre-service teachers critically and creatively develop Wikimedia-based pedagogical approaches, forming an online communities across diverse teaching and learning contexts. Secondly, the promotion of contributions by teachers to the Wikimedia suite to be critically evaluated and used by teachers worldwide, developing a global community of practice, and providing access to free-trusted-knowledge to broader learning communities. Thirdly, evaluate the impact of the project on participants’ knowledge, use and attitudes towards Wikimedia as a resource for classroom learning.
