Project Goal[edit]

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. Add or improve content on Wikipedia
  2. Improve or create item on Wikidata
  3. Engage existing editors
  4. Recruit new editors
  5. Increase skills for existing and new editors

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We are planning to host one editathon to focus on
Introducing new volunteers to Wikipedia and Wikidata

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.

  1. African Mailing List
  2. Wikimedia Forum

You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

Global Open Initiative social media spaces
LUCG SRC MEDIA GROUP
WHATSAPP GROUP
Wikimedia Ghana User Group Mailing List

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?

For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

  1. Global Open Initiative social media spaces
  2. LUCG Wikimedia Community Whatsapp group
  3. LUCG SRC Mailing List

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals.
For example: User:I JethroBT

  1. User:Sunkanmi12
  2. User:Kinvidia
  3. User:Oladipupo193

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Participants will be notified beforehand to come with their laptops if they are to participate in editing. Events will be hosted at Lakeside University College, Ghana. The institution will further provide internet hardware and computers to support the project. As a university, the venue would likely attract many new editors. To ensure that these new editors are equipped with the skills they'd need to contribute during the practical sessions, all participants would be taken through both Wikidata and Wikipedia editing tutorials before actual editing takes place.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

  1. Participants will be taught how to use talk pages so that, after the project, their recent changes will be monitored and feedback posted on their talk pages.
  2. Participants will have the benefit of engaging at least 3 experienced editors who will be present at the events. These engagements may serve as mentorship opportunities for the new editors to increase their on-wiki skills even after the project ends.
  3. Participants will be added to one or more of the following platforms (that will be created) to facilitate their continued engagement with Wikidata and Wikipedia:

WhatsApp Mailing list

7. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1SV6b85xOYeiC-i32eq-ic6rFrDKFQ0GaboMHewk8LVY/edit?usp=sharing

8. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Participants will be put into teams and allowed to compete for prizes. While everyone at the event will receive stickers, the project will give T-Shirts to top contributors by assessing their (participants) edits over a period of one (1) month. Taking into consideration that the different participants will have varied editing interests, the project will ensure that everyone stands an equal chance of winning a prize. Different price categories will be created for both Wikidata and Wikipedia contributions:

  • Edit count
  • Pages created/edited
  • Bytes Added to Wikipedia

Impact[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events: 1
  2. Number of participants: 25
  3. Number of new editors: 20
  4. Number of articles created or improved: 40 ( 20 Wikipedia articles and 20 Wikidata items)
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events)

Resources[edit]

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

User:Sunkanmi12 will be facilitating the events with the help of at least 2 experienced editors to be present at the event. The remaining facilitators will be involved in providing support for editors during the practical sessions. These facilitators will include:

The numerous wiki outreach projects that Global Open Initiative held there seem to be paying off now.
