Omorodion1/Wiki and Open Access Week Celebration at Ambrose Alli University
The International open access week is a global event aimed at promoting open access and scholarly communication. Given the successes recorded in the Open Semester Training for staff and students of Samuel Adegboyega University project, I will be partnering with the Nigerian Library and Information Science Students` Association, Ambrose Alli University Chapter to introduce Wikipedia editing to undergraduate students at the University as a way of celebrating this year`s open access week. The project will primarily focus on Wikipedia editing awareness creation, training of recruited volunteers and a week long edit-a-thon to mark this year`s open access week.

Project Goal[edit]

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. Recruit new editors for the Wikimedia community in Edo State
  2. Build a community of Wikimedia editors at Ambrose Alli University
  3. Increase skills for existing editors
  4. Add or improve local content about the South-South region of Nigeria on the English Wikipedia

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

I plan to organize two days training to equip the new members on how to contribute to Wikipedia and its sister projects.
I plan to organize a week-long virtual edit-a-thon immediately after the training to enable the trained editors practice some of the knowledge gained during the training

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

I will be partnering with the Nigerian Library and Information Science Students` Association, Ambrose Alli University Chapter. I have informed them about this project and they are excited about it.
I have identified undergraduate students that will participate in the training at the institution.
I have informed the Wikimedia community about this project via its
  1. whatsapp group
  2. discussion page at Wikimedia User Group Nigeria

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

Information about the Wikipedia training and edit-a-thon will be disseminated using fliers and social media channels.
The participants will be onboarded in a WhatsApp group to ease communication in the community before, during and after the event.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals.
For example: User:I JethroBT

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

The participants are newbies, so do not have the required skills. Hence the need for a two days training before the edit-a-thon
The participants have their personal laptops which they use for academic activities in the university.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

I plan to create Whatsapp group for communication
I will create outreach dashboard for assigning of tasks and tracking of participants` contribution during the event.

7. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

Yes, see link to the completed copy of the risk assessment tool here

8. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This project will further reinforce the commitment of members of the university community towards open access and the need to support Wikimedia projects. Furthermore, it will enhance the actualization of an active and vibrant Wikimedia Community in Edo State.

Impact[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events: two training + One Edit-a-thon
  2. Number of participants: 35
  3. Number of new editors: 25
  4. Number of of articles created or improved: 100+
