Wikimédiens du Bénin/Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos contest in Benin 2021
The Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP) is an annual campaign where Wikipedians across Wikipedia language projects and communities add photos to Wikipedia articles lacking of images. This is to promote the use of digital media files collected from various Wikimedia photography contests, photowalks organized by the Wikimedia community, on Wikipedia article pages. Photos help to grasp the reader's attention better than a wall of text, illustrate content, and make the article more instructive and engaging for readers. Thousands of images have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons via various advocacy programs, photowalks, and contests including international photography contests such as Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore etc. Yet relatively few of these photos have been used on Wikipedia articles. Today, the Wikimedia Commons hosts millions of photo images but only a tiny portion of these have been used on Wikipedia article pages. This is a huge gap that this project aims at bridging.

Project Goal[edit]

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. To improve the quality, reliability, and credibility of Wikipedia articles across french language and Wikipedia Fon incubator.
  2. To promote the use of digital media files collected from various photography contests, photowalks organized by the Wikimedia community, on Wikipedia article pages.
  3. Reinforce the level of the members of our User Group through training.
  4. Engagement of existing editors of our User Group.

Project Plan[edit]

  1. Online contest presentation session through Zoom
  2. Practical support and follow-up sessions for participants as part of the contest (July - August) (Zoom)
  3. Special coaching sessions for novice members (Zoom)

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. What content will the contest focus on, and why is it important to your community?

This contest would focus on the use of free media files on Wikipedia articles. Thousands of images have been donated and contributed to Wikimedia Commons via various advocacy programs, photowalks, and contests including international photography contests such as Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore, etc. Yet relatively few of these photos have been used on Wikipedia articles. Today, the Wikimedia Commons hosts over 62 millions photo images but only a tiny portion of these have been used on Wikipedia article pages. This is a huge gap that this project aims at bridging.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

We have whatsApp, Facebook and Telegram groups of our User Group members who live in the cities of Cotonou, Porto-Novo, Grand-Popo, Bohicon and Parakou ; they have already been informed of the competition through these channels and are ready to participate and also to inform people around them to join the campaign. We'll also boost publications on our Facebook page, Telegram, Twitter and this Facebook page to reach and involve more people.

We have also created poject pages on meta, wikipedia and share the information on Wikimédiens du Bénin User Group talk

3. How will you let participants know about the contest? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

In addition to collaboration with the contest organizers, we will have to use the Outreach dashboard to assess the number of contributions of each participant.

4. How will you judge the contest and award prizes?
Note: Grantees, judges, and other contest leaders are ineligible to receive prizes. Grantees who are serving as judges may not receive gifts through grant funding.

We will work mainly with the members of our User Group ; They will be trained in the discovery of Commons and on how to use images on Wikipedia articles. Tools for Wiki Loves Photo Competitions will provide us the images from previous contests held in Benin.

5. For photo contests, what is the strategy to get images used on projects?

Some members of our User Group have different levels of knowledge and skills, this competition is also an opportunity for us in the current context (Covid-19), to train them and to be able to stay in touch ; several training and support sessions have been planned for this purpose.

6. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Impact[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more:

For photo contests:

  1. Number of participants : 20 participants
  2. 1000 images to be inserted in existing articles and the 20 new articles to be created on Benin portal
  3. Wikipedia in French and 1 Wikipedia incubator in Fongbé are going to be improved during the campaign
